Autopsy vs Fremantle - Rd 17 2020

Who were our small, fast crumbing and defensive forwards?

Zurharr, Garner and Larkey tried, and did ok considering. JZ and Wood are done.
Turner, Taylor, TT and Mahony will be back next year. Forward line is not really the problem.

Relax people.

Grab a beer or wine, listen to some tunes, have a snooze, read a book, play a game, whatever you want.

It's sh*t I know - but being angry won't help at the moment. Life too short.

We are bad. I know.

I'm gonna smoke some crystal meth and watch Japanese pr0n all night. The game will be a distant memory.

He didn't think that of our list and either did our board when they appointed him. They sacked Scott when he said we needed to rebuild and everyone was high fiving when we played some good games late last year.

We hit the iceberg in the middle of the season and then everyone started to talk about hacking our list, that wasn't the mindset of the club when they appointed Shaw.

Well, by now everyone is disillusioned of the notion our list is ready to compete ASAP, so silver linings and all. Thanks COVID + the fairy that kneecaps our players.

And yeah, I get that it's not exactly ideal for the coach and board to misread where we stood but that's in the past and can't be changed, hopefully we genuinely do have a better understanding now and act accordingly. Personally I'm not convinced we're 3-5 years off like some people keep saying, but I also think we need a lot to go right very quickly on order to capitalize on the tail end of Goldy, Taz, and Higgins' careers. By all reports Brady is a smooth but ruthless operator, so while things look pretty ******* grim right now I'm cautiously optimistic that even by 2022 we could be making a push. Fix our half back issue, our small forward and forward pressure issue, get Cunners up and firing again, and throw in some natural growth to Zurharr, LDU, Larkey and the like and things could look very different very quickly. On the other hand we might not get the growth we want from the kids we have, our older heads might decline faster than expected, and we might suddenly be looking at a full on 5 year rebuild of the list from top to bottom.

Interesting times.

You don’t want to see it . It’s so sad. Looking at a broken man with little answers & going no where . I actually felt sorry for him .
i didn't see the game, but I was listening to SEN. Theywere saying that after the game, Shaw was just sitting on his own in the box, looking out the window, not checking notes or anyting, just sitting there. The game was long over and he had not even spoken to the players. They were saying that he had sat there so long, that the cleaners out around the ground. After a while, Rawlings came in and had a chat, and they left.

Depressing. I had hoped that we were just experimenting over the last few weeks, with selections and positions. Wins were not important and Shaw was secure in his job. This discription of his after the game behaviour really makes me concerned he is in over his head and hasn't got a clue.

We are undermanned, completely shot & the results are depressingly predictable.

Our game against Brisbane was miles away from what we were able to produce today.

We had five minutes here and there where we were competitive but this is not the team that will wear the jumper come round 1 next year. Goldy deserved more & so do we but this is where we are at for now.

All things considered it means an honest review of the list, a genuine go at the draft & a 2021 season with low expectations & no excuses.

I'm too old for the crystal meth craze. I feel like I have missed something. I have a pact with a few mates that we'll get on the gear occasionally after we retire. Crystal meth will be on the list.

It is not just the game plan, Brad evolved the game plan to limit the damage caused by having a very slow midfield, but we had the cattle to pull it off. We had Jacobs who shut down the most dangerous midfielder, we had Cunnington and Swallow who were inside beasts and we had Goldy and Higgins who were all australian in their position.

Swallow is gone.
Jacobs is cooked.
Cunnington has barely played this year.
Higgins is a shadow of his AA year.
Goldy is the only one of the old group who is playing decent footy.

We have two guys from the pine (Anderson and Dumont), one who can barely play more than 70% game time (Anderson) and one who isn't an inside midfielder trying to do the heavy lifting along with Simpkin who has played some fringe roles before Shaw.

Our system isn't just falling down because it is sh*t and doesn't suit the young kids coming in, but we don't have the cattle to play like we used to. The games we played really well under Shaw we played with such ferocity all over the park and intensity that sides hated playing against us, you can't sustain that type of pressure. Richmond is playing about as high a level that you can expect to sustain without major inconsistency in form. But that ferocity wasn't just defensive ferocity, it was offensive ferocity as well, when we were on we ran, we attacked, we used the corridor, we took the ball off the opposition.

What was running around today were blue and white cones.

When most clubs sack the coach, it is because they want to go a different direction. Scott was the one who wanted to a different direction and rebuild. The club was delusional about where we were at.

I think we can turn it around and relatively quickly, we just need to fix the midfield and get rid of players who can't hit targets. We need to be able to put more pressure on in the middle so our defenders have a hope of competing.

Shaw can't keep going on saying he is at a loss and he has no answers, you can't continue as coach if you have no idea what is going on. Our kids are getting pushed around too much, a lot more than kids at other clubs, our tackling is bad, our midfield structure is bad, there are a lot of the basics that need to be addressed. We cant just keep turning over the ball and have no system of moving the ball up the field, there was a stark difference between how Freo existed their defensive 50 and how we did. It is slow, there is no movement and it is just a predictable kick up the line. We are easy to play against atm. The amount of uncontested marks we allowed them to take was really poor. We can't promote a flat footed system in the middle and down back and then be surprised we are flat footed as opposition sides work to create space, lead into it and take uncontested marks.

We suck at the basics, these should be captain obvious problems to address.

“We need to... get rid of players who can’t hit targets”. Right now, not one single player on our list seems to be capable of hitting a barn door, once they don the blue and white stripes. Higgins, who is constantly referred to as being “very skilled with both feet” is arguably the worst offender. His tentative pokes down the line are a travesty. There’s really nothing we can do except erase this season from our memory banks (making sure we’ve learned the lessons first) and move on to next year. At least in 2006, we gave a yelp from time to time. Rhyce deserves his shot at next year. However, he will need to show us something fairly early or else his career will be in the dumpster, well and truly.

Cunners is so important to this club. Everybody stands taller when he is there and we have nobody to replace him. This has been happening for years.

I said a couple months ago, I have never backed a team that has relied so heavily on one player as North has relied on Cunners over the last few years.

Taz, Goldy, and to a slightly lesser extent Higgins have been practically out of petrol tickets for weeks, now spluttering to a halt on fumes only in front of our very eyes.

Yep. Taz particularly was pretty bad today, despite the lack of midfield support. Very rare to see him in the wrong spots so consistently.

This is what I notice being at the games. It is not lack of effort but rather having very little left to give. Larkey in particular looks completely spent.

Once you go on crack your never go back ;)

Burned into my memory. Hopefully Rick posts it.

Dumont isn't a good player. Never will be.

Despite typical over-inflated opinions here, he's very average.

He tries really hard though and runs both ways to his credit, hence playing whilst undermanned.

While it has been hard to watch at times, I have loved going week in & week out to cheer for our beloved Shinboners. For almost all of you that has not been possible this year. So I feel lucky & am still looking forward to next Thursday night against the Weagles.
Good man, that is what it’s all about. Thank you for representing and I am jealous despite the fact I would have left every game super pissed.

This has driven me crazy for years. EVERY other club has bigger and stronger physiques than our blokes, it looks like. Other than a couple in Taz and BMac, plus obviously Maj, we are a team full of tuckshop lady arms. Terrible.
Geez. In ‘95 and ‘96 I can recall saying the same about Fitzroy players. I made some quip at a game when they played Wet Toast, that Fitzroy had lightweight 25 year old Boys playing against muscle-bound 19 year old Men.

Today there were times when I did let my frustration become anger. Instead of screaming what was in my head I decided I would applaud the efforts & keep roaring support. There was a young kid two rows in front who did not waiver in his support all game. At the end the Freo fans were cheering to get to 💯 & he was roaring for us to hold them out. When the final siren sounded with them on 99, he cheered this little win & turned and laughed in triumph at the Freo fans. It was almost the highlight of the game. Hope he sees a win next Thursday.
