Autopsy Round 17: Hawks beat by Dogs

Thankfully the second half had some glimpses.

Was on the verge of writing Lewis off, but his last quarter was excellent.

Great to see Finn play, looked a bit off the pace in terms of his disposal, but thought he pressured/tackled well and will be better for the exposure.

Worried for the future of Howe, Morrison and Moore - all very slow without the elite disposal or brute strength to make up for it..

As a group we checked out as soon as we hit the hubs. Today we played like a group of guys who know they are 7 days off being released from their privileged hub and getting to party for a couple months.

On the plus side, Gunston showed some pride and was good again and some kids got exposure. I like the look of Greaves

Wouldn't begrudge Gunner's and Punky if either of them wanted a trade at the end of the year- our forward line isn't looking like a fun place to be at the moment.
First half was dreadful, second half was much more tolerable.
JOM and Titch went missing- Cuz up there with Gunston for our best.
All the <10 gamer's looked solid at least- Day was above average by our standards, Greaves did some nice things, and Finn looked solid enough in the second half.
We need to sort our ruck situation out more than anything else (fix that and our dated gameplan becomes a lot better), Bont had more clearances off our tap work than his own teams.
That being said English is a solid ruck despite some comments I'd seen earlier.

Greaves very good. Composure really stands out in a team that mostly look like chooks were their heads cut off.

Morrison seemed to play well.

TOB showed why he's probably worth perserving with.

JOM and especially Mitchell very well held today. Were they sat on or just having trouble getting their hands on it?

Cousins, Howe etc are not terrible players, but we need to replace these types with players with more class.

Sad that poppy was mostly ineffectual in what was probably a good bye game.

Was hoping we'd get closer, but given dogs needed percentage and we had no incentive to win from a draft point of view, it probably wasn't as ugly as it could have been.

Perfect storm for HTB, Dogs vs Hawks was always going to be a laugh in this department. The umps favourites versus the opposite. Played out as expected.

Our midfield continues to underperform. Despite the names we don’t beat the opponents in contested possession, we are below average kicks, we aren’t quick and our tackles don’t stick. Combined with underwhelming ruck performances it’s just sad to watch.

When we do get it forward we don’t have the cattle to take our chances. We rarely take contested marks forward and we struggle to lock it in. The only time we look vaguely dangerous is when Gunston has the ball in his hand. This has pretty much been our season.

Maginness didn’t look out of place on debut. Patchy disposal but his pressure and tackling efforts were great (including two ripper tackles on Bontempelli that weren’t rewarded). Thought our backline was decent given how quickly and often the Bulldogs entered - although our younger guys weren’t as clean as usual.

Good to see a bit more effort in the second half.

Thought it was amazing how much the team missed Worpel in the middle, probably emblematic of the reduced impact from our senior mids...

A game for Finn and good signs again from Cuz and Day is promising.

However there is something seriously concerning about the ruck set up/ strategy. With Big Boy playing, albeit as a defender, and Ceglar in we looked best when Lewis went in to the ruck around the ground. It’s a real worry morning forward, honestly not sure what they do with Ceglar??

Had a crack for most of the 2nd half. Could've been rolled by 10 goals but didn't.
Greaves and Day; yep, yep, yep.
Chad was good energy. Didn't always work out, but it always looked like he was up to something.
Those couple of Breust / Gunston last quarter interactions where they were almost telepathic and looked to be taking the piss. That seems like something we should try and do more often.

Always tough trying to play a sport that you don't know the rules for.

Goldy next week, yeah? Could be one for the almanac that one.

2020's a reasonable argument for the return of the final 5 system. Six teams scrambling for the opportunity to be a speed bump for the good teams.

I would very much begrudge gunners and Breust looking elsewhere - they’ve enjoyed 3 premierships and there’s some young blokes needing direction and seniority.

rebuilds still need class around them and they have that in spades. I hope they stay

Gunston.

What was that look about, at the end of the game. Just after the siren beat him to a goal. Very contemplative...

Still a hawk in 2021?
Reading waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much in to that i woulda thought
