We were no where near giving them 1 first round pick.

Just to recap Ted.

Charlie Gardiner detail of events.

"We were open minded about what a selection of picks might look like to satisfy Essendon. We were open to exploring a number of options or arrangements, in the end it was made pretty clear to us that pick five and nine or two first-round picks was not going to be enough"

“We did not offer picks five and nine. We were advised five and nine would not get it done. We didn’t need to offer it. We had a number of discussions over 10 days or so and it became clear that that deal was not going to satisfy Essendon.

“Essendon were really clear from the outset that they wanted a player who could replace Joe. He’s a terrific player and a contracted player. We knew entering the negotiation that it wasn’t going to be straight forward because Joe is contracted and we respect that.

“Essendon were clear that they would like a player and we weren’t able to add a player that was of interest to them.”

Adrian Dodoro detail of events.

“The media was speculating that nine and five were compelling picks. We made it clear we weren’t interested in nine and five, we wanted players.

“Their final offer was selection nine and a future first-round pick and that wasn’t good enough. We made it clear what we needed.

Harley is on record saying that we offered them 9 from the Papley trade and a future first.
We also offered them Papley or Zak Jones and a future first
Or Jones and 9/Jones and a future first.
Basically any workable of combo of 9, 2020 1st, Papley, and Jones was on the table for Daniher last year. Obviously 9 and Papley would have been impossible, but other permutations were available to the Bombers.
When did he say that?

Mmmm.
Harley says we didn't offer that.
He said 5 & 9 wouldn't have got the deal done.
Sounds as though Essendon were not interested in trading him so we stopped offering anything & kept Paps.

Essendon said they wanted a player cause they knew we wouldn't trade one. We offered 2 first rounds + Heeney they would have wanted McCartin as well

Because they didn't want to trade him to begin with

When did he say that?

Took me a little while to find the article, it was buried deep in my browser history. https://www.sen.com.au/news/2019/10...-and-the-two-swans-mentioned-in-negotiations/

“We were told unequivocally that picks five and nine wouldn’t get it done. I guess when you’re talking about responsibility to your club, to get nine without the guarantee of getting Joe, I don’t think that would be responsible list management,” Harley told SEN Breakfast.

“We put forward what we thought was a compelling deal and that was involving two first-round picks.”

Harley revealed the two player names they mentioned in discussions with Essendon.

“With our conversations around the industry to try and find Essendon a solution, we didn’t offer players up other than Tom Papley who wanted to go and we knew Zak Jones wanted to go to Melbourne, but they weren’t players that would have satisfied them,” he said.

Might even get the number 6 if thurlow doesn’t get a contract
He is on my hit list. Not on his form though. If list sizes go to 40(from 46), we have to get rid of 10 just to get 4 new players in from the draft and or trade. More if we do more trades. A very tough year for new players last year. Foot for example. Its going to be tough.

one more bit of derailing.. Thurlow will be traded.. hopefully he has a good last game so we get some value for him
