All i know watching us play this year is we are dead short two classy half forwards.

With our draft and trade position, probably also salary cap position we are going to need to get creative. This either means younger guys who are yet to burst onto the scene and could be pried away with 3-4 year contracts or people with injury histories.

Like it or loathe it, without Nicnat firing we are a mid tier side. With our mids fully fit and with nic in place we are a top 4, potentially a top 2 side.

We are almost certainly without rioli for 1 more year. The top up players we've added are basically just that, top ups who at their absolute best are bottom 6 in a best 22. Even in topping up the list we probably have at most another 2-3 years of challenging before a more major rebuild.

2021 HF Cripps and Ryan. Forward pocket Camo

I can't help but feel we need to a slight shift in thinking around our drafting/recruiting this off-season.

We are "around the mark" but since our 2018 flag, we have lost a little bit of class, particularly with our small forwards. A lot of that is losing Le Cras, Venables, and Rioli.

It would go against the grain considering we are preparing for smaller list sizes, but I can't shake the feeling we need to be a little more imaginative around who we bring in to the club this off season. I want us to go for high risk/high reward recruit.

The most obvious choices:

Sydney Stack
Elijah Taylor
Nakia Cockatoo.

Whilst I agree with what you’re saying, in absolutely no way shape or form should we even think about Taylor. He’s made some pretty big * ups and would need a few years to play in a reserve grade to show maturity before we should even think about it. And even then, I wouldn’t.

You really do have a thing for problem cases don't you.
Some times the juice just isn't worth the squeeze

Taylor in particular, no club will be touching him with a 10 foot pole after his third incident this year and now second for domestic abuse allegations

I agree, he has a lot of work to do around character development, judgment etc.

Being recruited to West Coast could be a catalyst that helps him make that transition.

We know full well that Liam Ryan has had issues, before being recruited to the club (Crown casino) and in his draft year (DUI/blow up with his missus in Geraldton).

If we think that we have created a strong culture over the last 10-12 years, and are serious about using our standing in the community and AFL to promote and uplift Indigenous prospect, taking someone in the position of ET and putting in resources to help him with that transition is exactly why we have Narkle and Bateman.

It's very easy to take a someone like Buddy or Adam Goodes and make hay. The whole point of investing in our Indigenous welfare is recognition that many of the Indigenous boys have barriers and obstacles to overcome due to the social/cultural and economic conditions they find themselves in due to intergenerational impacts of colonialism/racism.

To not dig deep in terms of our capability and capacity in this area undermines the reason it exists in the first place.

When Narkle was stood down during the COVID breach, he was an Indigenous mentor at the detention centre/prison in WA.

He is well equipped to work with the Stack/Taylor types that need structure, guidance and mentoring in order to reach their potential

The counter point to Liam Ryan is Murray Newman.

There we plenty admirers for the likes of Dayle Garlett, Chris Yarran and Rhan Hooper around here when they were available and the club was admonished by some for not picking them up. Hindsight was proven right as even a good culture couldn't have turned them around had we got them.

Again sometimes the juice just isn't worth the squeeze

There is always a counter point.

What I would respond with is.... what would/could have happened to Chris Yarran if he was 20 and came to West Coast today?

Just because a player went to a different club (Freo of all clubs) doesn't mean that West Coast isn't able to do that work, and quite possibly get better outcomes?

The model isn't one size fits all, everyone is different. Where you do get the players who knuckle down and work hard (Ryan, Walters from Freo) you do still get those who don't curb their ways (Newman, Shane Yarran from Freo).

Some cases there are too many red flags to ignore, Stack and Taylor are firmly in that category. You need to let it go, the club won't be taking punts on prospects that risky.

If Taylor is guilty he should never play AFL again. No excuses.

Or Channel 7 give him a commentating role and he ends up on a Full Monty show...

Than there is next to zero purposes of having an Indigenous welfare dept, and we should just stand them all down, because it is really just for show.

The only real weakness i see on our list is the next generation of mids. This year and when we use our next years first should be all abount onballers.

Mids: Although Sheed, Yeo and Kelly, and also Gaff will be there core for the next 5 seasons, if we could get another 1-2 stars through their that are young that would be good. Venables could of been that guy tbh

Forwards: Allen is a nice second/third option, but isn't as tall as Kennedy, but him Darling and Ryan is a good mix for the next 5 years

Defense: Probably our strongest line in terms of strength relative to age, Duggan, Cole, Rotham, Barrass, Harry Edwards are going to be there for 5-8 years

Ruck: Pretty weak here but not too worried

Duggan and Nelson to the midfield.

Liam Ryan
Jamaine Jones
Brandon Ah Chee
Tim Kelly
Lewis Jetta
Jarrod Cameron
Willie Rioli
Anthony Treacy

Would all beg to differ

I like it how this has turned into comparison of behaviour of indigenous players.

Because white peoples don’t have behavioural issues or beat up their missus.

It's not down to one race, just they are the examples that relate to the club

You have had the like of Colin Sylvia, Nick Stevens, Wayne Carey, etc over the years that show it's not down to one particular race.

Being a dickhead spousal abuser transcends race.

Think we try find another small forward.

Ryan has shown he can play that Rioli role so for me he can replace Venables. With that Cameron replaces his spot and we hope that either Petch gets better or Rioli is back for 2022.

I think Ryans year has been epic with his work rate and it seriously showed in an undermanned midfield how well it worked.

I don't mind giving blokes a second chance, but they can put in the work first via WAFL if they want a redemption story.

Help those who help themselves. We don't know the full story but from the outside looking in it seems Taylor put hands on his partner, it got out, then he somehow came across her again and repeated the actions. He is the complete opposite of who our club would open their arms to. The disharmony within the playing group, their partners and the club staff would set us back so much more than we could gain.

Go and grow up, Elijah, we'll talk in 3-4 years if someone desperate hasn't grabbed you first.

Evidence to the contrary is pretty easy to come across, mate.

The ones I bolded have/would have made it on to a list on any AFL list.

The point of Chance and Narkle isn't to recruit players that have or would flourish in an AFL environment at more or less any club.

It's function is to provide resources, support and guidance to those who would otherwise struggle to adapt, due to issues that inflict SOME BUT NOT ALL Indigenous people and families.

To use Tim Kelly or Lewis Jetta, as an example of how successful Indigenous welfare programs are is completely disingenuous. They were and are AFL ready from an early age in terms of maturity.

Literally that is the most low hanging fruit.
