***************************************************

Just like to thank Aphrodite and the other Carlton mods who started the Bluemours NON Discussion Thread and who have kept it free of chat over the past few years.

It helps so much when you just don't have the time to read through this thread, cheers and great job.

Also heard very poor defensively (loves to point at players that should be marked - we’ve had a few players like that) and treacly slow.

Let’s move on.

Goddard Junior?

In 2017 Shiel speculated that if he moved from GWS it would likely be to Carlton (his family’s club). By 2018, we enquired and he was initially very interested. Partner, teammate and $ issues got him to Essendon. He wouldn’t be reflecting on that decision well!

Throughout 2019, Coniglio was very very keen to move to Carlton (also a team he once supported). By crunch time in trade week, the AFL, starry-eyed loyalty, and an ability to have great leverage at the Giants captaincy/staffing input, he stayed at GWS. They are not reflecting on that decision well!

Now in 2020, 3 key midfielders have expressed interest in the Blues (2 Dees. 1 Power), 3 halfback flankers (1 Giant, 1 Bomber, 1 Eagle) and a small Swans forward.

One of each section position would be ideal. Hopefully we are much more succesful this time - indications are that:

More players are seriously seeking us out.
More players are on the move.

If they come to Carlton in 2021 they’ll reflect on their decisions well!

First part of 2nd last sentence is very apt

Well if that's the case, I'd be making a modest offer and leaving it on the table.

4 years, $500k including performance incentives.

No back and forth, no "Essendon have offered this much, can you go a little higher". Put a fair offer on the table and leave it there til he decides what he wants to do. Not interested in being used to drive up a contract at Essendon, and not interested in getting into a bidding war over a role player seeking a payday.

If Essendon can beat a "fair offer" then they're welcome to him. And if they can't or won't, then the trade price becomes a second rounder.
Fully agree. Not huge on the fact that money is clearly such a significant factor for Saad tbh. Sounds like it was a big deal when he left Suns and our offer back then didn’t get over the line, and he’s clearly hanging out for more $$$ from * this time around.

I get that it’s his right to do it but ideally we want guys who actually want to come to the club and play for Carlton - ie Jack Martin.

If this becomes a bidding war I’d rather we get out early and focus our efforts elsewhere.

Getting at least one of Williams or Saad is key. Williams preferably, but Saad alone is great.

We don't need any other major acquisitions. Get Witherden if economical, as well as Graham if suitable.

Williams and Witherden would be good business in the trade period.

Could always go after a kid at saints that will get pushed out. Like coffield or hunter.

Not a snowflakes chance in hell are both of those being pushed out, Hunter is an absolute jet and Coffield not far behind

This is where we need to step up to the plate and nail good players that show interest in coming to Carlton. Austin needs to make it really really hard for eg saad and Williams to say no! We are at a point where we really need to inject these type of players onto our list. Instead of just missing this player or that player, now is the time to strike hard! IMO
Work hard at gaining saad and Williams firstly(if merret is serious then go hard at him instead of saad?)
Then maybe look at finishing touches like witherden, lonie, narkle graham ect

That's all good and well, but we're going to have to cough up the cash. There'll be at least half a dozen clubs chasing Williams, a couple of those are in a similar stage, or advanced to ours. Money talks sadly.
