I look at the British Prime Minister and I look at the average Joe walking around Melbourne and health wise I don’t see any difference between him and 50% of the average Joes. And COViD put him into ICU. There’s nothing abstract about the idea that the situation he found himself in, could apply to large swathes of the general population. And whilst the restrictions are onerous, I’d prefer that to suffering Boris’s fate. And I’m sure I’m not alone on that front.

Yes there is. The death rate for anyone under 60 without a major health condition are tiny. Extraordinarily so. Only a few hundred people in the UK in that category have died from of a population of circa 65m. There is BS modelling that govts rely on (and try to scare people with) then there is the actual EVIDENCE.

If you are worried then lock yourself away. Its a bit rich however to tell others they should do the same.

This is rubbish. He's a chemical engineer who promotes high fat diets? He has frequently quoted data relating to the issue which has not been real. Not a great start. The statement lockdowns are ineffective is simply wrong. Lot's of strong data for showing lockdowns are very effective at reducing spread, if you believe otherwise you are an idiot. I'm sorry I couldn't get past 4.20.

BS, study after study has shown little or no correlation. See JP Morgan, Ionnadis, Lancet and even WHO. See Carl Henegan, Gisecke, Gupta also.

A team of medical researchers have found lockdown measures and testing made no difference to the number of people to have died from coronavirus. Experts from the University of Toronto and the University of Texas compared case numbers and mortality rates (deaths adjusted by population) since May in the 50 worst-hit countries.

. Rapid border closures, full lockdowns, and wide-spread testing were not associated with COVID-19 mortality per million people.

Much of it is due to false positives based on increased testing. The media of course wont tell you that. Hospitalisations have barely increased in a number of countries.

I wouldnt take their word on anything.

Incorrect.
Please show me who is currently worse than the mighty USA.

More lies. You lie like it's candy.

Yawn.

The giant NHS Nightingale Hospital created at the NEC in case local hospitals were overwhelmed by coronavirus is being scaled down, we can reveal today.

The original arena location - capable of providing more than 2,000 emergency beds - is being emptied of beds and a smaller version is being created on the NEC estate.

We understand workers are currently dismantling facilities so the giant hall can be returned to the NEC.

It was never used by coronavirus patients.

The showpiece Nightingale hospital in London will shut next week after treating a small number of patients but will be kept “in hibernation” in case a second wave of Covid-19 infections emerges.

No further patients will be admitted to the facility, which was created amid much acclaim in just 10 days, and the 12 patients being treated there at the moment are being transferred to other London hospitals.

The Nightingale, built in the ExCel conference centre in the Docklands area of London, has proved surplus to requirements in the fight against coronavirus because established hospitals in the capital coped much better
with the influx of critically ill patients after hugely expanding their intensive care units.

You will find which country tops the deaths per unit population changes frequently. Belgium was at the top once. However if we look at totals the USA, with the most cases and most deaths remains at the top of the table and has done so for a very long time. This is despite spending 18% slice of GDP on health, taken from the worlds biggest fattest cake. There response has been terrible

Then you pick on poor Peru, with a terrible health care system and a GDP which would be just a pimple on USA GDP.

So they had to expand their units rapidly to prevent being overrun, meaning they didn't have capacity for other patients? Isn't this something you're screaming about in other threads? You just make s**t up to suit your agenda at every turn.

Stay safe in your nursing home.

The thousands of extra ICU beds in Australia for Covid-19 haven't been used either. And they don't come cheap.

Coronavirus ward created to treat COVID-19 patients at Geelong hospital sits empty

$30m intensive care refit at former hospital stands empty

Meanwhile class two and three elective surgery has been closed or at 50% since March. Procedures include total hip replacement, total knee replacement, shoulder reconstruction, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, IVF treatments.

Credit where it's due though, hospital staff have made some great Tik Tok videos to pass the time in empty wards.

Im sure most pollies realise now they stuffed up, they just cant admit it for obvious reasons. Academic "experts" scared them. Familiar tune. So they have to pretend they have or are saving lives. Wait til unemployment rises and evictions start. I am pretty sure opinions will change then.

Norway's Prime Minister has admitted that she took the decision to close down schools amid the coronavirus pandemic 'out of fear'.

The country's leader Erna Solberg took to Norweigian television on Wednesday to admit that she had panicked while imposing the strict lockdown measures and but made the decision as a 'precautionary' move.

During an interview with state broadcaster NRK, the politician said: 'Was it necessary to close schools? Maybe not. But at the same time, I think it was the right thing to do at the time. Based on the information we had, we took a precautionary strategy.'

She added: 'I probably took many of the decisions out of fear. Worst case scenarios became controlling, and we kept thinking; ''how can we be a leader?''

The video Meds posted addresses these things and more.

Belgium was one of many European countries that followed a very similar patterns of deaths - a dramatic surge, mainly in the elderly with underlying conditions, then a gradual decline, to now barely any deaths.

The profile of deaths in the USA differs across the country, and corresponds to seasonal and climatic variations. The NE of the country followed the European temperate zone pattern, whereas the hotter South has followed something more typical of tropical regions like Brazil and Peru.

All the evidence considered, it would seem that Australia and New Zealand's strategy of trying to eradicate the virus is fundamentally flawed, and will have a massive cost to our society.

At some point the government will scale back extra payments to the unemployed, then cease them. Banks will be allowed to foreclose on mortgage defaults. Landlords will be able to evict tenants. That's when the screaming will begin.

There's a lot of angst in the UK about only being allowed to sit with 6 friends in a restaurant, or the rules about which country you can fly to. It's nothing to the craziness of what is happening here.

People in Melbourne are confined to their homes except for 2 hours a day, and you need an 'excuse' to leave the house. You are only allowed to socialise with one friend. Cafes, restaurants and pubs can't have any customers sit inside. Leaving the house between 9pm and 5am will get you arrested. You have to apply for special permission to leave the country, such as visiting a dying relative. But once you leave the country it's almost impossible to get back.

I find it hard to believe that people are defending this bullshit.

oh god, more lies. Just stop lying. Why in summer are we spiking in cases in Ireland then? Explain that one FFS.

I do not understand why there is a race to provide misinformation to support bullshit and moronic views that go against any logic and rational thought, especially against science. Certain members of this forum are the main culprits who do it. Not sure whether it's trolling or they actually believe in scientific denial. Doesn't matter whether it's coronavirus or climate change.. according to them science is wrong.

The figures are obviously far greater than any other state because VIC had a small (on the global scale) outbreak.
The reason for the outbreak was not hotel security guards (NSW, WA and SA have them too) nor was it their behavior (again all states had breaches- NSW even had a few guards catch it).
The reason Vic had a true outbreak is it got seeded into the wrong community.
A community with huge families, language barriers, shitloads of crims, lots of abattoir workers and a culture of blokes kissing each other hello.
Add to this a religious festival at just the wrong time and we arrive at where we are now.

IMHO the only difference between the states is luck. Dan didn't do anything different really to what they did in NSW. Neither did QLD or SA or WA. WA shut the borders but the main advantage was simply distance.

Dan is now getting rightly pillored for his bullshit lies and curfew but would any other politician have done anything differently in his position during the start of the outbreak? very very much doubt it.

I've seen many reports in different media about escalation in Europe, so your speculation is not correct.
I have seen WHO predicting significant further escalation
The unfolding disaster in India, Brazil and closer to home, in Indonesia, I've seen articles about them, too.

I still see the US is still the worst in the world, despite it's wealth. Mr Trump remains confused and keeps on lying. Can't fix stupid.

Incorrect. My "speculation" referred specifically to the ABC 7pm news bulletin, not "many reports in different media", and the relative weighting over a number of months given to each (US v Europe).

Try to read accurately first, then post the snark. :thumbsu:

I caught an interview with Joe Biden, where he did not utter a single coherent phrase, sentence or idea. And yes, Trump ain't much better. I watch Daniel Andrews press conferences and nothing he says bears any corresponding relationship to reality. What kind of pandemic can be denied and requires a test? A pandemic that if you catch it, might kill you if your old, have other serious health issues, and are unlucky. Why do our government and media believe it appropriate to scare the public during a pandemic?

The models justifying the pandemic have all proven to be exponential exaggerations. The deaths that are recorded are mired in obscurity causes (with or without). A pandemic should leave no room for disputation. No argument about life expectancy. No arguments about y.o.y mortality rates.

The meaning of the word pandemic has changed into something completely different. And we have changed with it.

For the last decade, we have witnessed a growth in unhinged emotional outbursts. It is fashionable to be outraged, angry, critical, and scathing towards someone or some group without even the pretense of any rationality. Labels are thrown around like confetti: nazi, racist, tin foil hat, conspiracy theorist, climate change denier, anti-vaccer, sexist, homophobe... The list seems to expand by the week.

Nothing good can come possibly from this locked-in tit for tat escalation and COVID is only the latest iteration of this pattern.

the concept of having more ICU beds doesn't make sense to me.

Everyone they wanted to treat had the same illness. They should just have specific wards setup to deal with it. The concept of ICU seems completely wrong, more like a way to line hospital pockets.

in 10 years time this period will literally be a case study in gross over-reactions and how governments took a rank political point scoring approach to something that should have been dealt with in a rational, pragmatic way. What has happened in Victoria is not pragmatic or rational in any way, shape or form.

trump is very coherent. What he says normally lacks sense but his internal logic is actually very consistent (ie: he wants to be the president, do rallies, be popular, make money). Biden seems to have some legit cognitive decline.

the US has the fattest population in the world and an aging population. A literal powderkeg of circumstances which the virus has set off.

To rank their response is bad you need to understand how much it has cost, both in money and lives. There needs to be a balance as it was impossible for the US to just "lockdown". By the time the virus was identified, there were thousands of cases in the US. It is easy to throw stones at a country that had almost no chance of controlling the virus.

People sitting here talking like Australia has been so great. We have absolutely no plan to get out of this. The state premiers see votes in lockdowns, so thats what they are doing, feeding on people's fears. So we're stuck in this holding pattern with record unemployment, its getting worse and still no real plan to get out. We're already racking up decades of debt that the next generations will need to pay. Its absolute madness.
