COVID-19 / Coronavirus

Get it under control and then what?
Get it down to zero like NZ did ?
And then??
Argue furiously about why it came back?

Many smarter people than you or I have admitted that an infectious virus like this is impossible to eliminate
How many threads on this topic have you been removed from now?

We are not going for elimination. This is common knowledge.

Every state is taking steps in the efforts of aggressive suppression.

Community transmission which Vic was seeing huge numbers of only a month ago make that almost impossible.

Only when the numbers of “unknown cases” are reduced greatly can steps then be made for us all to go back to some sort of Covid normal life as some of the other states are already enjoying.

Agressive suppression sounds very good but the virus just comes back.

Why did NZ come back? Their lockdowns were harsher and went for longer. What was achieved ? Delays in the virus sure but then they have to keep locking down until a vaccine comes.

So what are you actually arguing for? More lockdowns? Elimination?

Looks like one of the most promising vaccine the astrazenica/oxford one has serious problems.

Trial paused when one patient developed transverse myelitis,

Will this lead to a rethink in victoria? If no safe vaccines are available= how long can we lock down for?
Only fools are banking on a vaccine - one that has never been developed to combat and beat a coronavirus ever before.

Far from clear that this is a problem.

These trials are large scale, so there was always a good prospect some of them would become I'll just through random chance.

They now restrict it in case the vaccine contributed to this disease, but it very may well not have. So trials could return to normal soon.

quality of hotel quarantine - one of the 3 security companies is not up to scratch and clearly political decisions were made to appoint them and give them the amount of work that they did
...

Two hotels, out of twenty, had breaches of quarantine. Do you have any numbers on how often the quarantine line was breached?

The inquiry identified the hotel night clerk as the breach at Rydges, can you advise as to how the guards caught it?

The inquiry hasn't identified the night manager as the breach. He was the first to test positive, but the inquiry hasn't revealed exactly how anyone caught it.

Regardless of who got it first, Rydges was not being run properly considering it was the hot hotel (you only got transferred to Rydges if you had the virus or were showing symptoms of it)

Whether or not you believe the hotel night manager or the guards got it first, a key decision was made to send the guards home to quarantine there, while the hotel night manager was quarantined at the hotel.

Who made the decision to send them home, who ensured they were safely quaranting etc etc

The Hotel Quarantine system was a debacle. At least one silly thing comes out every day.

This isn't just a question of if you believe the ADF were never offered / available then the Vic Gov have no blame.

Cleaners weren’t told they were being sent to a "hot" hotel after a COVID-19 outbreak, Victoria’s hotel quarantine inquiry has been told.

The cleaners, from Ikon Services Australia, had been contracted by the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions to perform deep cleans of hotel rooms in the program.

Angela Spiteri was responsible for the governance for the operation and logistics of the quarantine program.

Ms Spiteri became aware about lack of compliance with infection control measures.

She was “surprised” it had led to the virus spreading.

They really did think it was a jobs and equal opportunity program rather than a quarantine one.
They put too much faith in people to do the right thing.
I think we all did.

Yet, in what was a sloppily run hotel operation, how many quarantine breaches were there?

It doesn't really matter how many breaches there were - if all the current cases in Australia trace back to the Victorian Hotels, then I'd say there were too many breaches.

You only need one breach.

That's the whole point. One infection gets out of quarantine and it can spread.

In this case we have two or 3 breaches total across 2 hotels.

Once it breaks quarantine if people aren't doing the right thing like staying home when sick, not seeing people when sick etc then it spreads.

They had people car pooling, people living in dense housing told to isolate at home, people going to work when sick or seeing friends and family when sick.

All outbreaks can be traced back to a single source in theory

Wuhan China allegedly, not sure why we'd even hold this inquiry given that?

Nobody in Victoria or the world since the first person to catch it has since spontaneously combusted with Corona. It has all been passed on.
