Just like to thank Aphrodite and the other Carlton mods who started the Bluemours NON Discussion Thread and who have kept it free of chat over the past few years.

It helps so much when you just don't have the time to read through this thread, cheers and great job.

If Betts helps the development of Honey, that's good. But his form hasn't warranted another year, particularly with further decline expected.

It has to be.
Right now, he is the only specialist small forward we have. Plus he should benefit next year from not having to play so many games like this year.
I still think Eddie can be a threat next year.

.......but Russell. :)

The CFC know what they'll be getting in the back half next year....forward? Still a mystery.
I understand why Simpson was asked to retire and if....if....Betts gets another year, that's fine also.

If we are to go forward we need to be ruthless not a nice football club.I don’t have an issue with Simo being ‘told’ to retire if that’s the case however if he is playing favourites re Betts/Gov then that’s different and hopefully not accurate.

Agree with this.
Eddie is one of my favourite players but he looks done. His mind knows what he needs to do but his body can no longer do it.
Why McGovern gets a free pass and others (such as Dow, LOB, Honey, Philp etc) are made to work hard to get in the team and then dropped immediately is beyond me.
We need to set standards through the whole group, no matter age, status in the game or friendship with the coach.
It’s a bit worrying.

He started off the year moderately well. His second half has been mostly atrocious.

If we can utilise him early in 2021 before he gets gassed/cooked, and then nurse him through the remainder of the season with many intervening breaks, it could work.

Think it's a mistake giving Betts another year, not so much for the money, more for the list spot and especially given there will be no improvement, just more decline

I guess it means that we are not looking to bring anyone into the small forward role and Betts will help mentor the likes of Honey and Owies.

Provided that is the plan I am not furious with the decision just a little disappointed we won’t see Paps in blue

Simmo as sad as it is I think is the right call.
We obviously have 1-2 targets in mind to fill his role and unlike Eddie I don’t think Simmo would take well to being “managed” for periods of the season.

Let’s face it, if we land Williams where would simmo play with a fit Newman & Marchy also available ?

I loved watching Kade put his body on the line each week for our club but nothing is forever

Simmo and MK this year, Murphy and Betts next

3 games on, rest. Manage him to the point where he's not tired at all. If we have any short turnarounds, give him the week off.

I'm not convinced his performances this season are a fair indicator of his ability at AFL level, even as I think he's very, very lucky to have gotten another year.

I don't think retaining Betts will change our strategy or targets

You don't need to play in the squad to mentor or teach, that can be done at the lower level

If Teague has Betts penciled in as best 22 next year, then something isn't quite right

Im assuming it means no smalls forwards are coming in via trade.....I could be wrong tho.... [emoji2371]

Betts wasn’t considered best 22 for Crows at times last season....

I wouldnt be so disappointed of Simmo being told to retire if Betts was told as well.

Unfortunately its looking like Betts is going around again despite arguably less output than Simmo, bit puzzling.

That could be due to having a couple of trade targets in the works for his position. If Williams does come across, then my preference would be to keep him on a HBF with Williamson making the other HBF his own. Where does Simmo go?
I think if Papley was still on, then Betts would have 'retired' as well.
That still leaves another spot for a developing small forward as im hoping Fisher gets back in the guts next season.

I parse the Eddie equation like this:

Eddie Betts is certainly on the decline as far as his physical capability to perform to highest levels goes - but players wishing to take his place need to at least rise to the level of his decline in order to offer more - right now the gap between Eddies worst and any other small forwards best - is still in Eddie's favour -

I guess the same is true for Murphy - Dow/LoB/Stocker/Philp/Cottrell etc have to be able to be better than Murph's worst form at least before being serious considerations to take his spot - they are all a fair way off being able to play to his middle standard for 4 quarters.

Re McGovern he is a third tall type badly out of form and down in confidence - play him as much as possible - right now there are no other alternatives anyway - I don't think he is the 'spud' that many are suggesting.
