I keep forgetting that England actually won that series

I love a good tri-series as much as anyone but it becomes tougher to take them seriously when the side that wins 3 from 8 goes onto win the finals against a side which dropped one game in the group stage.

I keep forgetting that England actually won that series

I was a big reader of Inside Sport back in the day and for the month after that series they ran an article on how to fix ODIs with the usual suggestions (split innings, star bowler bowling more etc.)

The article was clearly written before the series concluded because the article included how none of those changes would have saved England.

At that point I realised that maybe print media might be in a bit of trouble.

Came across a wonderful bit of cricket related history today.

Jack Fingleton who had a short but successful 18 test career in the 1930s including the Bodyline series for Australia (and has a section on wikipedia dedicated to a bitter relationship with Bradman) later became a notable writer who had friends in high political places including the Prime Minister of Australia Bob Menzies as well as English House of Lords peers.

His daughter Belinda had a boyfriend who was a country boy car mechanic. Good looking, served in the army, but a bit of a loud mouth scruff. Jack never took to him and when a big opportunity arose for his daughter in 1964 to move to London she was on her way.

Saying goodbye to her boyfriend was tough but it was not for long. While her parents could afford the best in class for her plane travel, he had little to his name and took a six week long boat trip.

They reunited but things became difficult. She was employed as a secretary for Lord Snowden who was married to Princess Margaret. He was making a living back in the garage but this time as a used car salesman. One was fraternising with royalty and travelling on all expenses paid trips, the other was flogging cars. Their relationship came to a natural end.

That car salesman was George Lazenby who a few years later became James Bond.

Absolutely outstanding contribution.

Fingleton was a fine player, who at the time of his retirement was the only player to score tons in four consecutive test innings.* He was in the press box when Bradman scored his famous last innings duck. Supposedly he almost strained himself laughing. ROFLMAO indeed!

*This has since been equalled by two others and surpassed by only Everton Weekes, who scored tons in five consecutive innings. In innings number six he was run out for 90.

Maybe I am showing my age, but I just had to google him to make sure he did play. Great call.

Gavin Tonge popped up in a video I was watching.

His only test wicket, Shane Watson LBW.
That 2009 West Indies team when everyone went on strike would be great for this thread if anyone could remember them all.

I remember Floyd Reifer captaining them

Was that leftie opener from Queensland with them at the time? Forget his name

Omar Phillips was among the players picked for that Bangladesh series where something like 90 contracted domestic players were unavailable. He was an opening batsman who made one century in 57 first class games.

You might be right and me wrong.Just googled Favell's stats and surprised to see he played 19 tests.

No I agree he would be a bit obscure to most people. What makes him less obscure is that Ian Chappell thinks he was better than Bradman and loves dropping a story about 'my old captain Les Favell' every few seconds when he's commentating

As I said I only remember Favell as a kid and it was more because of his involvement with South Australia and of cause in the 60,s on ABC radio cricket broadcasts.I presume he opened for Australia and before the Lawry,Simpson,Stackpole and Redpath era.

Omar Phillips has spent the past two summers playing local cricket for Strathmore in Melbourne.

Travis Dowlin. A pick from that 2009 debacle, but I think he scored an ODI century against Australia during that summer.
