Cliff notes:
  • Stepping back from his current senior role following the 2023 AFL Draft
  • Transition plan, raised the possibility with Vozzo in April
  • Replacement is Matt Rosa, whose thread is here: Welcome to Essendon Matthew Rosa – AFL Talent & Operations Manager!
Full text from media release said:
To coincide with this announcement, the Club’s General Manager of List and Recruiting, Adrian Dodoro, has made the decision to take a step back from his current senior role following this year’s NAB AFL National Draft. He will lead the Club through the upcoming 2023 Trade and Draft period in his current position prior to transitioning to and assisting Matt Rosa moving forward.
Dodoro, an Essendon Life Member, has played a significant role at the Bombers over nearly three decades and said the time was right to take a step back.
“I approached Craig back in April to discuss the concept of transition and I feel that now is the right time to make this decision,” Dodoro said.
"I sat on the panel to assist in the selection of Matt, and I believe he will be an outstanding acquisition to the Club for years to come. I look forward to working with Matt moving forward.
“These roles are very taxing on individuals and their families and it just feels like that. After nearly three decades and with stability in key roles at the Club, now is the right time for me to take a step back in to a role which will provide me and my family with a better work life balance.
“More immediately, we have an important few months coming up and I’m looking forward to playing my part to deliver a strong Trade and Draft period for the Club to ensure that the playing list is in a strong position for the future.”
Essendon CEO Craig Vozzo acknowledged the significant impact Dodoro has made at the Club since joining in a full-time role in 1998.
“Adrian is a highly respected Life Member of the Essendon Football Club and has made an enormous contribution to the Club and the wider AFL industry during his time in football, including assisting to navigate the Club through unprecedented and challenging periods,” Vozzo said.
“Throughout his time at the Bombers, Adrian’s commitment and passion to take the Club forward in its list management and recruiting, has been unquestionable. Some of the Champions of Essendon have been identified and selected by Adrian, and we will always be grateful for the important and enduring role he has played.
“On behalf of the entire Club, we would like to acknowledge Adrian’s selfless decision and we look forward to his ongoing contribution to the Club.
“Adrian will work with Matt to ensure a smooth hand-over and a successful transition of responsibilities.”

The whole thing is disingenuous, it lumps it all at his feet and doesn’t factor in the fact that the footy department was a skeleton crew up until about 2005-6 with results to match, Sheedy had and was using his god complex to overrule and throw his weight around whenever he saw fit and a lot of those guys were actually talented but not even close to developed properly.

I don’t think the argument for getting rid of him has anything to do with ticks and crosses

People defaming Dodoro on who he selects come draft time is daft and lazy. IT's more than that. It's the lack of list management rather than draft guru so many like to point out on here.

will say this. losing Daniher was clearly something we never had a Plan B for. Seems it caught us off-guard at exactly the wrong time
Had built the forward line around him. On the back of his AA year we went hard on trades to add quality at the expense of depth.

With Hooker & Hurley at their age, i imagine 2019-2021 was the window we were targeting.

then when he tries to leave, we look a massive gift in the mouth and go with hope instead.

would question any list strategy with that many eggs in one basket.

Dodo starting negotiations REALLY high asking for one of Curnow/McKay/Walsh. We all know pick 7 & De Koning would never happen either.
I think it's going to be a long, drawn out negotiation as usual.

its too early to take anything reported seriously.
but if this comes up draft week, i hope someone swiftly boots him in the face.

Assuming this is correct - which I doubt, as sports journalists are as reliable as pulling out - then I’d completely welcome dodo to ask for the moon.

You can’t offer a bloke 3m and then not cough up your first.

It’s just as an insulting offer as asking what dodo was asking for.

So it should be. I can give you 5 fatal flaws that make him much more likely to botch out next build than not.

Driving hard bargains at the trade table is not one of them. At least SOS had the balls and understood.

It's unbecoming for Carlton to be acting like a little bitch.

Especially as Carlton are known as being hard to deal with, along with essendon.

Just in time for the live feed to boost ratings!

Considering trade period is 3 weeks away and
Carlton are already leaking negotiation details, refusing to give up their 1st pick for a guy they want to pay $3.25m, and threatening to walk him to the PSD already - yeah i expect it is gonna feel like forever.

Carlton have developed the same reputation for being hard to deal with as Essendon. A noted Carlton supporter in Sam Edmund has admitted as much after polling a group of list managers he talks to.

If this drags out, it will be just as much Carltons fault as Essendons

Your club was threatening to walk him to the pre-season draft in the same breath as announcing that he had nominated you.

I would say we're now even.

Surely with Joe Saad Fantasia plus whoever you are targeting to get done, he cant be wasting time with everyone.

There are the obvious negotiation tactics but asking for Walsh is just a pure waste of time and really makes a joke out of it all.

Nah not true we were respectful.

The PSD stuff only came out after the articles of him being selfish came out. You can have a look at our initial statement on Saad...simply said we would work with Essendon to finalise a deal.

I mean, we certainly haven’t leaked that, which is a negotiation tactic in and of itself, who’s to say that has even actually happened?

This is the kind of trade good clubs do on the first morning of trade period and walk away happy. We’re both not even close to being good clubs so expect a needless s**t fight and for both sides to risk not getting anything over 4 places in the draft or something stupid like that.

Given the AGE has reported it and no one at Essendon has denied it we can safely say it happened.

At the end of the day Saad is a professional footballer, if the Blues dont trade for him he won't he playing there. He just wont get to the Blues PSD pick if he ends up in there. I reckon the blues have forgotten that the PSD threats only work if you have picks up the top few of the draft. Its one of those things too if your Saad and they dont give up the first your wondering how much they really value you.

I imagine North would come up with a massive deal too good to refuse if he ends up in the PSD.

Lol. Didn't realise every club released statements denying every bullshit rumour this time of year.
