People pretending like they have zero decent young players is bullshit though. They have a few. bring in some more, build team loyalty, trust, belief and away they go...
I think you guys have have had 5 Rising star nomms in the last two years, which is good but putting against GWS in 2012 who had 8 in the season and then look at how theyre placed as a club now I hope you get Board and FD right because talent isnt enough.
Lookin forward to this Virus pissing off and getting down to Arden st to watch some footy. 👍
Best of luck Kanga’s.

Genius and lunatics are quite often one and the same person. To us listeners, mozart was a genius no? before he became famous, he was probably know as the madman. i can assure you that north is closest to success than anytime since the 1999 flag. Onfield stuff is easy, some brutal list cuts and getting rid off the useless players.

Off field is the real intersting one. The afl now has less money for all, so managing the finance is no longer about maximizing the money but minizing the cost. in other words, the best clubs moving forward are the ones who knows how to be poor and not how to be rich. We north have been cash strapped for years, our operational model is built for the current parsimonious climate.

We will thrive, it's the big big money clubs that will be require to make bigger changes to how they run the club than us. The virus is the great re-setter that we have been waiting for. How can we not achieve success when even god is with us.

You seem to be thriving at the moment.

Apart from what is allegedly occurring with the coach, what signs are there that your throw away line (said sarcastically) is accurate?

Just because the club does not respond to every bottom feeding journalist or rumor monger doesn't mean it is true. If you believe anything that comes out of Wilson's or Barrett's pie hole then you deserve everything you get.

Finished 2nd last, unceremoniously dumped a 1/4 of your list with rumours of instability with experienced players and coaching staff all over the place. Never been better positioned.

the financial dip is probably more profitable than our previous financial records in the early 2010s, its a recession for afl, not for us.

Key to premierships are not the superstars but the support cast to the superstars. You will always have the superstars, if ziebell and cunnington are at hawthorn, they would be all time greats. But without the good support cast, the superstars will also have to do the donkey work and no time to shine. Our 2020 purge will result in massive influx of new players who are fit for the modern game. Amongst them, a few will rise to the top. The pyramid structure will have to have a solid base. I am far more confident of this solid base built under rawlings than anytime since 1998 GF. Let's be honest, most north supporters were not confident of the 1999 flag had essendon being there as they had the wood over us for the whole year.

Anyone else find it bizarre that in spite of all that’s come before with the financial carnage for the game broadly and list carnage for North specifically, it’s today of all days that the relocation speculation button gets hit

Odd comment with no basis or alternative view.

Not sure a club can afford 20 years of mid to low table finishes.

That being said, considering who is boss is, not that surprised.

Which is what North have had now. Except for a 3rd in 2007, even finals appearances have been limited and extremely short lived. In the past 20 years 7th to 10th has been the common ladder point North has resided in.

It's no secret that North struggles in the corporate market in Melbourne. Membership is less than half that of teams like Collingwood, Richmond and Essendon and average season attendances haven't cracked 30K since that 2007 season.

Things have to change and maybe this Covid season has been the kick in the pants North needed and this cleanout is the result of the realisation of this.
BUT...
it needs more than a simple cleanout. The North board needs to come up with a full strategy; recruiting, trading, drafting, NGA, corporate, membership plans, time lines and so on.
Without this I worry for the long term viability of North. AFL bailout after bailout, not financially solid enough to really change things, a permanent second tier Melbourne existence where mid table is success and one week of finals something to celebrate.

It could be that North is Tasmania and Tasmania is North.

Bigfooty: North are no good, too many spuds

*North cuts underperforming players and coaches after 13 years of no top 4 home and away finishes*

Ben Buckley lets the members know, that in the biggest shitstorm financial disaster of a year we have managed to post a profit.

A small semblance of good news in an otherwise s**t year.

Whately has some how turned this into a negative about our ******* viability?

What would have been his reaction if we posted a $10m loss?

******* idiot.

So they made a profit without needing assistance from the AFL? That's a pretty fair effort.

From the email sent to members today when it turned to finances:

"In the meantime, we will forge ahead. From a Board perspective, our decision-making centres around one ambition: how we can build a team and a football program that will win our fifth flag.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to set out the facts about our financial position and business:

1. We have recorded a profit for each of the last eight years (and 12 out of the last 13 years). Despite the challenges of 2020, we will post another small surplus this year, to make it nine years in a row. This has been achieved through prudent financial management and despite not playing any games in Tasmania in 2020

2. We have achieved these outcomes while ensuring we allow the football department to pay the soft cap and TPP limits

3. Our debt hit a peak of $9M at the end of 2011. At the commencement of 2012, we put in place a debt reduction campaign and thanks to our members and sponsors, debt is expected to be completely eliminated by the end of 2021

4. Debt could have been paid off in 2019 but a strategic decision was made to invest in a facility redevelopment to accommodate our expansion, including our AFLW team

5. That $6.2M redevelopment of our facilities in 2019 was mostly funded by the Club and we thank all the wonderful North Melbourne people who contributed generously to that project

6. At the end of 2019, we had a debt position of $650K. We will reduce this by a further $250K bringing the debt down to $400K at the end of October 2020. By 2021 we hope to have wiped debt completely – that’s $9M in just 10 years while investing in football and our facilities

7. Like the other unassisted clubs, we have not needed to access AFL funding assistance in 2020 from the AFL’s line of credit during this COVID-19 period (since April 2020)

8. While the majority of AFL clubs receive variable funding from the AFL above the base distribution, in 2019 North received the 6th highest variable funding. Variable funding is a key plank of the equalisation policy and why the AFL competition has been so successful in recent decades

9. We have the bulk of our sponsorship revenue secured for next year and are proud to welcome global insurance brand, AIA, to our partner family and we are particularly grateful for the ongoing support of our major partner, Mazda, as well as Spirit of Tasmania, Hello Solar, PFD Foods and McDonald’s. We will also have some further big announcements to make in due course

10. We are viewed as an anchor tenant, critical to the success of the exciting Arden Precinct urban renewal project; Melbourne's largest urban renewal project earmarked to create more than 34,000 jobs and become home to 15,000 residents. This presents a generational opportunity for us to cement our future in North Melbourne and expand our home base at Arden St. We have invested significant energy into getting the best outcome for the club and our community. We will update you on our plans as they evolve.

I hope the information above gives you a better understanding of where things are at and why we are supremely confident of our future and direction. These are just a few of the facts, and the reason why our club is in a strong position off the field."
