I think at trade time it would be nice if GWS remembered how we gave them Dawson Simpson, then just accept the AFL Compo and move on ;)

I mentioned the hawks pick swap as they might go for it as they need talent.
The other option is if we really are into crouch and gws wont budge re cameron we tell adelaide we will inflate crouchs salary to band 1 on the condition they trade us the pick-eg they get 2 and trade it to us for 11 and 13 with whatever other swaps are needed. If the points are equal enough the afl cant block it then gws know we can take cameron at 2 in the draft if they match so they are really backed into taking the compo.

I doubt we would be that nuclear as we like to preserve our relationship with other clubs but ots a real option if both crouch and cameron are coming.

Just doesnt sound like wells. We will try to persuade a player they like and we are prepared to let go but not force... but with picks ..

2 R1 picks which would be earlier than what we gave for Ottens is what I can see as an option...
.. we may give up a Fr1 , we may look at trading out someone we would prefer to keep

You have a dry sense of humour

I come in peace.

Do you guys think someone like Nathan Kreuger might be gettable now that you are getting Jeremy Cameron?

I have no intel whatsoever that we are interested but liked him as a draft prospect before you guys snared him.

Ratagalea and Krueger are probably gettable if we bring in Cameron. I doubt they would want to rot away in the VFL

It would depend on how the clubs rates his prospects a tall defender

Hi. I come in peace (to pinch some of your excess players!) Wondering what is the future of Narkle and Nathan Kreuger? I can see Port being interested in both. Are they rated / likely to get another contract. Port needs a mid with speed and a tall defender who can mark. Both of the players fit the mould and seem gettable with upside. I know Kreuger has played forward but port need a tall defender and he has played back. Cheers.

Any reports of Narkle leaving have him headed back to WA or to a Melbourne club.

I don't think Geelong move Kreuger on as we'll need tall defenders ourselves once Harry retires and Hendo goes

Eddie McFlog on triple m suggesting the afl should look at how camerons parents got a camper van. Suggesting we bought it for them. What a salty POS.
That’s rich, coming from him 🙄

Just look at the current way Adelaide are trying to handle Crouch.

The current RFA system is very flawed.
The Adelaide situation is a great example. They are basically dangling their best player as bait for a team to offer a deal high enough that gets them band 1 compensation (which they would never get in a trade if he was contracted), otherwise they will just keep him on what would then be an "unders" deal. So the only way for a club to get him is to pay "overs" to the point that Adelaide would rather lose their best player who publicly said he wants to stay. That is the cart leading the horse if I've ever seen it. I guess you say fair play to Adelaide for working the system, but it is surely not what was intended when RFA was created.

One has to remember that AFL as a comp is unlike a lot of professional sports ...one can not force a contracted player to go. They must agree to a trade
Yes, I understand that TC. We must have players who’d consider going to GWS or another club, as part of a trade, because they would have more opportunity to play games at AFL level. Better than being stuck in Cats’ VFL, with little hope of playing AFL at Geelong.

It's time the arguments about free agency were pointed at the AFL.
They set up the additional teams and gave them extraordinary picks in the draft system. Hence they had unusual amounts of talented young players who were going to demand more money in an equalised system. Then the salary cap became unmanageable. It isn't poaching, it is bursting at the seams at the cap. If they could manage what they had, so many players wouldn't leave every year. Cameron would have been offered more dough.
Then if he wants to leave for lifestyle, they have more money to focus elsewhere. I want to see their top end player payments.
Are Whitfield, Kelly, Coniglio etc getting more than Dangerfield, Martin, etc. If so, they need as a team to manage that more effectively in an equalised system.
Free Agency should be just that. If players want to get more years on better money at a better team with a better culture, they should be able to do that.
If you are the best computer programmer in the world are you going to stay around people who can't bring out your best on small dollars and no security. Of course not.
Don't make Cameron an example for problems the AFL have created
The AFL have stopped the progress of teams like CARLTON, North Melbourne, Melbourne, ESSENDON etc by giving their picks to expansion teams. Hence their picks are next best to GWS and GOLD COAST.
It is time they managed themselves as clubs and like the rest of teams develop strategies to stay strong.
Let FA be just that, FREE. Stop compensating clubs for inadequate management. Let them make mistakes to grow themselves. If they are entitled and AFL assisted, or if they have hopeless management that overpay individuals, then let them go through the consequence of mismanagement.
But most of all get the AFL out of the control of team player movement

Also Dave Matthew referenced the Shiel and Treloar deals as his benchmark for Cameron. Ironically all pretty much exactly the same age currently.

Sheil (25 years old) + GWS 2nd rounder FOR picks 9 & 14 (F1st)

Treloar (22 years old) + 28 For Pick 7 and a future 1st.

Cameron (27 years old) = Pick 9 outright.

I mean Treloar has played 100 games at Collingwood already. None of those much younger players were either free agents nor traded for two 1st rounders outright.

Is there a 27 year old KPF type deal we can use as a template... Jezc is older but KPF are more valuable .. and if Geelong are knee deep in the water they will just dive into ensure they get wet. I cant see this getting past day 1 or 2 in the trade period

Yep its completely backwards.
And it actively encourages movement of the best players from low teams to top teams ala Lynch. The low teams know the compo pick will be better than any pick they receive from a top team. And the top teams know they do not have to offer the crazy contract, just something good enough to get a compo pick.
If a low team does not have the salary cap space to match an offer from a top team then something is very wrong. But they will most likely always take the compo pick as its too good to refuse.

remember it’s there to benefit player

You forgot about Josh Hunt and Stevie J. More gifts. Plus Dave Matthews is a raving mad Geelong supporter from Gods Country.

Well that makes it even better!

And we let them get Brett Deledio too!

I wouldn’t think so
Jenkins maybe

FWIW I think this is a good discussion topic and does need to be changed, but in the case of Jeremy Cameron it is all academic. Wellsy will offer a deal early in the trade period that satisfies GWS, pisses off the more extreme BF posters on both sides of the fence, and ends up being a huge win for the Cats in any case. Any "bending over" has already been done when Cameron told GWS he won't be staying there.

Think Dangerfield, not Tim Kelly.

Stevie J is still there too. I think they owe us :) Clearly we have given them more than we have received.

What about Hendo? 1st rounder for 60-70 games. Don’t get me wrong I want Cameron. Badly. However if he plays more than 110 games in the hoops we will have done very very well given he’ll be 28 before starting. What price do you pay for that?

Admittedly Hendo may have salvaged his deal this year.
