I think you’re right. But it also appears Geelong was wearing these in the late 1990s/early 2000s after wearing navy numbers from 1994-.

2005 is a bit murky, in some light they look black but in others they look blue

2006 is also unclear, but the number font is different to the traditional style of 2005 and the new standardised font of 2007

The standardised number font was introduced in 2007 (left), with the same used in 2008 (right). By now the numbers are certainly blue

The font was slightly modified in 2009 (compare the #9's on Ablett in 2007 and Milburn in 2009 and the #3's of Lonergan and Chapman), and has remained the same since

Am I the only one who thinks the numbers in every one of those photos from the turn of the millennium are actually navy? A dark navy sure, but I wouldn’t call any of them black.
It's possible. Certainly considerably darker than the navy hoops in the late 90s/early 00s though.

Re the Cats: the transition to navy blue numbers may very well have coincided with the beginning of the dye-sub era (circa 1995/1996).

When did the sublimated numbers actually start for Geelong? I know a few teams were still using stitch-on numbers into the 2000s. Possibly those were darker than the sublimated hoops.

Personally I think they're all black until the standardised font was introduced in 2007, they look too dark compared to the navy on the jumpers to fall under the same umbrella.

Take this comparison between Gary Ablett in 2004 and Tom Lonergan in 2008 for example. The #13 on Lonergan's jumper is certainly sublimated and is identical in colour to the hoops, no question. The #29 on Ablett's jumper raises a lot more questions. If you zoom right in to compare the number to the hoops or the shorts, even allowing for the fact the numbers were foam stitch-ons the number certainly appears to be black (even if it is somewhat of a washed-out black)

Either 2006 or 2007 was the start of sublimated numbers, I know 2005 were still stitched on. I'm inclined to say 2006 given it coincided with the bulky font (and in the images available the numbers appear 'flatter'), but certainly by 2007

I found some images from old footy yearbooks of Geelong players (1988/1992) and while the numbers were certainly dark, it’s hard to tell if they were black or just a darker shade of blue being stitched on. A5567D65-344E-4D86-96C2-B1FACB7DE13D.jpeg 12C9F69D-A062-441D-BE3E-5548D123B43A.jpeg

I opened them all in Photoshop and then inverted them.
In each case there is a slightest hint of yellow in both the numbers and the hoops.
(Yellow being opposite Blue in the colour spectrum)
If the Numbers are Black, then so are the Hoops.

Sublimated jumpers came in around 1995-96. Preseason 1995 was the first time they were used, but not by all clubs.
Initially, not all players wore them, and sometimes you see players wearing them one week, and not the next, usually, based on weather, or when the game was played. (Night games tended to see more of the old acrylic jumpers)
Initially all logos and numbers were sewn onto the sublimated polyester jumpers.
In 1998 jumpers were produced with the logos printed onto them.
The numbers, however, were either sewn on, or heat pressed.
This was so the manufacturer could make all the jumpers the same (except for variation in sizes), then number them at the club.
We see the first custom fonts in 2001, with Richmond, though I believe these were also heat pressed.
Eventually the numbers were printed on the jumpers, and each one was uniquely sized and printed for the player wearing it.
This is around, 2005-06. Some clubs had different fonts, like Geelong shown above, and Brisbane.
Most stayed close to what they had.

I don't think it matters at all.
Disagree
It does matter.
It's creating a line of demarcation between "true and accurate", and "close enough"
Too often in football history the AFL, in particular, have decided close enough is good enough.
Getting something correct as detailed as 'what colour numbers Geelong wore' sets the whole tone for everything else moving forward.
If the website is going to be correct, based on the information we have available, then it's going to be correct in every detail.
A lot of research has gone into making sure the website is as accurate as possible.
Picking and choosing what's important to get right, and what's not only allows for doubt as to the veracity of information that is accurate.

PS Therefore I've fixed the Geelong Home and Heritage pages to reflect the change in number font.
I haven't changed the colour on the numbers since 1994 because I do believe they were Navy Blue.

A signed, certified player issue Ablett junior away guernsey from his debut season (2002) is currently on Facebook Marketplace.

I asked the owner the colour of the numbers and he said black. From the look it appears to be the same guernsey and numbers from his first goal in R3 2002:

What a jumper, an incredible piece. Just found the listing but unfortunately it's a tad out of my price range

Thanks for following up with the owner though, certainly is confirmation of black numbers for at least 2002 and likely further into the 2000's

So which year are we saying they had Navy numbers? Only since 2006 when they were sublimated into the design of the back?

I think definitely 2006-2020 they were navy.

I have seen 1994 images which seem to be navy too. If that is so, I am unsure when they went from navy back to black in the mid-late 1990s.

1998 looks Navy in some conditions and Black in others.
