these sorts of threads are always interesting... what was the first comic you ever read?

Mine was Spectacular Spider-man #245 way back in 1996-97 written by J.M DeMatteis and pencilled by Luke Ross. I actually bought it from a newsagent after becoming addicted to Maximum Carnage on the old Super Nintendo. I was pretty much sucked in from the first page as Spidey cracked a few jokes and beat up the Chameleon... I was hooked from then on :p
 
Ooooh. Had to think. It was back in the 70's (real early too-'bout '72). There was a company called Newton (Australian) who did B&W reprints of Marvel stuff. They had a huge four colour poster in each issue (awesome). It was either a reprint of X-Men #2, an FF reprint, or an Avengers reprint. I was about 4yo. I got all three at once. I remember them having a major impact on me. I got the comics when I was in Hospital having my tonsils taken out. The ******* kid in the bed next to me tore up the poster from the X-Men reprint (which was itself a reprint of the cvr to X-Men #1). I've been scarred to this day:D

Probably an issue of Amazing Spiderman around 1986... But the stuff I remember firing my imagination was the McFarlane run on Spidey in about '88 - Venom...
 
My grandmother died in 1974. I can remember reading her Phantom comics when she was still alive. I read Whizzer and Chips and Disney comics as well.

The first comics that I collected were Spiderman comics. I had a big case full of them until I got caught stealing a comic from the newsagent. I got to stand and watch my dad feed them all into the incinerator.
 
When I was young (in the late fifties, early sixties) I read Uncle Scrooge,Classics Illustrated and black and white 100 page reprints of D C comics(including such characters as "Rex The Wonder Dog" and "Roy Raymond : T V Detective" !) In the early 60's I had a lot of trouble finding the colour U S comics (and there was no such thing as a specialist "comic shop" !) I think that my first colour superhero comic was "Avengers 10" in about 1964.
 
The first comic I ever read? Wow, thinking back to the early 80's.
Probably a Uncle Scrooge & Beagle Boys comic. We used to love them as kids.

The first one that left a profound memory though was New Teen Titans, where Robing and the gand were fighting the Brotherhood of Evil in Zandia.
It written so well and George Perez's art was just magical.
I was hooked from there on in.
 
When I was younger, it would've been Mad Magazine.

But when I started collecting comic books, Sin City: A Dame to Kill for: 1, 2nd edition. One of only two second printings in my entire collection.

Must be a generational thing. I read my grandfather's Phantom comics too. I still buy the annual editions.
 
About 1966/67/68

There were some Pommy B&W comics, Fantastic and Terrific, they were Marvel reprints

Fantastic had the X-Men, Thor and Iron Man
Terrific had the Avengers, Dr Strange and Daredevil

IIRC

They got me hooked, and thereafter I went hunting for the original USA stuff

2000AD - Fantastic in its heyday ... Judge Dredd & Anderson taking on the 4 Dark Judges - Fire, Death Fear & Mortiis. The 4 Dark Judges were very simple and logical in their outlook - Crime was committed by the living so they decided to make 'life' ilegal.

Other than Mad Magazines in the 90s, my first graphic novels were by Jhonen Vasquez (Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and others) around 2001-2ish.

Currently reading Preacher and Outcast in preparation for the new TV shows.
 
If it is your first read of preacher lucky you. Absolutely nuts and just a massive V sign to anything Garth Ennis chooses. Been a fan of his writing ever since(the boys is ridiculous) and hopefully the TV series does it justice.

Just finished book 3 (of 6) for Preacher this morning. I actually walked from the train station to my office whilst reading it to finish the last few pages... This is one of the best thing I've ever read. Do you have any other recommendations? is the "The Boys" a book by him? A guy at the comic shop I got them from said the same pair of writer & artist also did a great Punisher run.
