I never said CJ skills were good. Can you find where I said that? I'm not sold on CJ either by the way but he's shown more than Downie at least from an athletic and aggressiveness point of view. I think there's a chance he can still improve his skills.

In the games I saw Downie play he was either at contest and wasn't eager to win first possession or too easily conceded in one v one contests.

‘this year shows he’s a solid defensive contested mark. Getting caught out of position, or even being the mug who looks stupid going after an unsavable defensive situation, seems to be the thing

Basically no good judge of football thinks Cj is a better prospect than downie. It’s possible you didn’t see his best.

Yes it's possible. Then again I might I've seen his worst which rarely gets discussed about prospects, particularly when they just show highlight packages.

I'm any case let's hope I'm wrong for our sake. Then again we may not be paying much for him anyway.

P.S. All I said is I'm not sold yet, I haven't called him a bust or a no hope prospect. I'm just giving my geninue assessment from the games I've watched.

From what I have seen Downie doesn’t exactly enjoy the contested ball much like Smith, Hill and Scully but what he does bring is a quality run and overlap game with that beautiful left peg. Had he played this season on ball like he was going to we may have developed that side of his game more.

If anyone is interested, Downie plays in Rangers win over Gipsland. Pepper also plays in this game.

A nice move by Downie at the 2:52:36 mark.

Try to remember he is 12 months younger than most of the boys.

Honestly?

How about the guy he was on at centre bounce before that? Not only did he lose track of him, he let him get goal side and even got a handball off.

He does that AFL he'll be a massive liability. If that's the best highlight you can come up with, it's confirmed then. Put a line through him. No good judge? 8 years ago I was the only on this planet that said Dusty will win Richmond a Grand Final one day. I think I'm a pretty good judge.

Well that must make you an expert in everything then.

Shitting on Downie like you are is just as nonsensical as proclaiming him the next messiah. He has weaknesses. He also has strengths.

Seems like an excessive response all things considered.

Hate to break up the self praise but you’re telling me Dusty never let a guy “get goal side and even get off a handball”? Reckon you would struggle to find a player in the history of the sport who hasn’t made that mistake on multiple occasions. Plus he is playing against kids 12 months older than him. I would expect a few errors as he learns the finer points of the game.

Just remember it isn’t that Hawthorn are taking him at #1...Hawthorn likely won’t even be asking him to start from day 1.

there’s a reason drafted players more often than not do an apprenticeship before playing at the top level. To learn the sport. So you can put a line through him if you want but I’ll be saving my judgement till I have some more information about the player at the level with coaching from the level

No I didn't put a line through him.

I was just stating an opinion of the games I watched him play before getting attacked cause apparently no good judge could ever say anything negative about Downie. If that is the kind of attitude to have, believe me, our player development will turn this club into an an embarrassment.

I'm happy to cop criticism, it doesn't bother me. And if Downie ends up being half as good as Smith then great. Not sure what people want. At least I spent time looking at him. Do you prefer I blindly accept everything coming to hawthorn turns to gold? Hate to break it to you...

While I'm at it. I remember scouting CJ and saw Worpel and thought I had seen the best prospect in his draft. Yep to my surprise he drops to us at 45, forgive me if I trust my own judgment over all the "good judges".

You are forgiven.

Congratulations mate, wish I could aspire to be as fantastic as you. Poor form dissing a kid who has even pulled on the jumper yet.

He’s a winger, very few of them are contested beasts. Downies bottom age year was better than cj’s draft year, if you want to see what downie will bring to the hawks have a look over his all stars game, had 20 odd possessions at around 90% and broke the lines and took the game on at every opportunity. Has a good turn of pace too. Don’t get me wrong I like cj’s endeavor but he’s very flawed, and I can only seeing him making it as a shut down back pocket. But even then I think he’s pushing shit uphill to make it

I see CJ making it more on a wing. Faster, more endurance, longer kick. And he's taller just for another advantage.

Longer kick than downie or just in general? Downies got a huge leg. I just don’t think cj’s skills or decision making is anywhere near afl level. We used to pull our hair out over Hartungs disposal and decision making but even he was streets ahead of where cj is atm

I wouldn't say his kicking is bad. You haven't really been watching his technique. It's decent enough already and could get better to become elite.

The main problem with CJ is his decision making and composure under pressure. Will soon see if he improves that with more games.

He had the worst kicking efficiency out of any kid at the draft combine, I think a majority of it is his decision making but I’ve also seen him miss a lot of easy kicks without any pressure. His action might be sound but I think he either gets lazy or bites off more than he is capable of.

Lmao, Downie sounds like a very good prospect for the 2nd round to me. Rated as one of the better kicks of the draft which fills a massive need in the midfield. That alone makes him very valuable to us as a 2nd round pick.

It's a bonus he is tied to us.
