WARNING TO ALL VISITORS TO THE GEELONG BOARD. You are - for the most part - welcome to discuss the current list management & trading situation at Geelong. However, this is our board, so be respectful of the home board posters & don't inflame arguments (make your points succinctly and move on). And if you're just here to troll, then don't bother or you will be enjoying a holiday

And they have been doing that since 2011 for what??. One GF ,no premierships.

No, I don't think they thought they were in the same premiership window as they believe they're in right now.

The vision about where we are at clearly changed if you want to compare removing players like Bartel & Johnson with what they are doing now.

Disappointed to see Fogs go. But Simpson going straight past him when he returned to the team in the finals can't have helped his cause. And Stephens supposedly being ready to step up to senior footy sent him further back in the queue as well. If this also allows Narkle to stay, I can see how the path to the senior team as an inside mid wasn't getting any easier for him in 2021.

And neither Lang nor Smedts (both picked earlier than Fogarty) ever made a real go of it at Carlton. So I'm a little surprised they're prepared to take on another of our group who never cemented a spot with us, actually. Narrative of these moves so far hasn't really worked for them.

Wish Fogs all the best, of course. But I don't see him burning it up there, and accept that his trade value was never going to be stellar. Best for both parties, I believe. And if this deal does get Higgins in for two effective years, I don't detest it half as much as some others will.

In the end, expecting early draft picks in trade deals for players who have hardly fired a shot in senior footy is Dodoro-level fantasy. Simply not a world that Wells or the GFC can be expected to live or operate in.

I think you're quite wrong on that. I think Tom will be dominant in 21 - the way he has managed his body & fitness overall looks very impressive and I reckon he easily has another solid 2 years in him.

Cameron will help this also.
Can really be the stay at home forward. Size and strength can only increase as he gets older. He may not jump, but he'll be throwing defenders around.

Picks now sit at 13 15 20 30 51 plus a 1st 2nd and 2 3rds next year.

I cant imagine we will hold all of those picks by tomorrow night though but its a great hand.

good rather than great Pure.

Fogarty was an upgrade of 38 to 30 ... we better make sure its useful

we need to trade for an early pick now ..and we can give it all to GWS ..something like P6 and P20 ... ? 30 for Higgins ...

So by the time we go to draft ..we will have 15 and basically .. last call ?

Who cares about the media? And you say we give other clubs good deals but I can't really think of a trade that has come back to bite us. Probably McCarthy the most but Brisbane offered an injury riddled player multiple years which we wouldn't. It suggests we're actually pretty good at judging who will go on to be a good player and who won't and what looks like a bad deal at the time ends up fine.
You are right, no player has come back to bite us, that’s why we continue to have faith in the club decisions
If we kept McCarthy, Miers doesn’t get a game
If we kept Fog, he’s fighting for a spot against Constable and Stephen’s.
I’m just frustrated that’s all

That post is kind of sick.

Why? Some fans are disgusting. Every single team in the league would kill to make a GF. Let alone make a GF and get Jeremy Cameron the next season.

But oh no some of our old players are old.

Give me a break.

Yeah it's crap hey.

Better if we had been at the bottom of the ladder for the entire time.

We could have been to the draft for all these years and still lost 3 prelims.
People would probably be crying for why we didn't just trade for established players...

Should just fold the club and give up now. Pick a sport where it's easier to win a flag. Maybe with just a couple of teams.

The Fogerty trade isnt as bad as people are saying, we basically got pick 40 for him and likely get Higgins.

Out: Pick 38 - 465 Points + Fogerty

In: Pick 30 - 629 Points
Pick 51 - 259 Points
Total - 888 Points

888 - 465 = 423 = Pick 40

Fogerty to Carl so we can get Higgins.

Yuck. Fogs and Cocky gone. First time I’ve ever thought players will come back to bite us. Constable and Narkle sure as well won’t.

Reckon Caddy has gone ok at Richmond. Playing in two winning finals teams against us (and going on to win the flag each time) would constitute some sort of nibble at least.

So after the 2017 draft there’s a photo of Wells being happy with a big smirk.
The players we drafted in Fogarty “traded” Kelly “traded” Constable “wanting out/tradeable” Miers “tick”

Don’t think he’d be smirking now, 2017 is now a draft failure

Higgins will make it all better. You watch.

No bigger career kiss of death than Geelong player being traded to Carlton - my condolences Fogarty.

Come on... Adrian Hickmott was a good player!

Would have switching Fogarty out any of the games he played for Simpson or Narkle have changed anything. IMO he has a similar problem to Constable, he does his best work as an inside mid, doesn't do much outside of that role.

In 12 months he'd have zero value, and we save 100k+ in the cap.

yep.. but in the end it means when you look at the players we didn't not take it was a poor selection. More often than not ..the way it goes. Drafting is often when players are the most expensive in draft pick value.

Think several on this board called for Sam Taylor that draft. .. so be it..

I've got a theory that people care much more about the initial draft pick a player was drafted at than they should and that leads to frustration.

I reckon posters around here would feel very differently if we'd picked Miers up at pick 22 and Fogarty at pick 57. People would say Miers is a good pickup at pick 22 while Fogarty showed a bit for a pick 57, might or might not make it but we've moved him on for a pick upgrade. Overall a perfectly fine result.

People ignore that Miers at 57 is a great pickup and makes up for Fogarty being a poor pickup in hindsight and instead concentrate on another busted early pick. Yes Fogarty is disappointing but in recent times guys like Miers, O'Connor, Henry and Simpson look to be great late picks.

I thought fogarty was going to be a star midfielder guys? What happened? Traded for potato chips despite being contracted and us having all the leverage.
Are you going to post these chest beating comments in every thread?

How do you explain the way people have reacted to Constable's treatment? He wasn't a high pick.

Given the picks we've been taking to the draft over that time (and our 'success' with the earliest of them), I struggle to see how we would have even made it through to lose three prelims. Let alone a GF in the season just concluded.

This thread is a classic example of 'same claptrap, different year'. Every trade period, we're generally told by some here how poorly Wells has handled things, and that our rapid demise is now basically assured. And every season following, we continue to be relevant, contending and building some new 'unlikely types' into what remains a competitive unit.

IWWT.
