WARNING TO ALL VISITORS TO THE GEELONG BOARD. You are - for the most part - welcome to discuss the current list management & trading situation at Geelong. However, this is our board, so be respectful of the home board posters & don't inflame arguments (make your points succinctly and move on). And if you're just here to troll, then don't bother or you will be enjoying a holiday

"Brander is set to join Geelong for a future 2nd round pick. Both teams have agreed to the deal."

Who said that one? Hasn't heard it

So we have 43 players on the list with Jezza, Smith, Higgins joining after all the trades/delistings.

According to AFL, it is supposed to be 38 on the main list, and up to 6 on rookie list for 2021.

So this is our Rookie List so far:
  • Atkins
  • Brownless
  • Henderson
  • Close
  • Okunbor - Cat B

Which means we currently have 38 on the main list with the current trades/delistings.

Though I think we need to upgrade Atkins this year if we keep him? Which means at least 1 more delisting on the main list if we want to upgrade Atkins?

We have 42 not 43 by my count. Atkins is contracted for 2021 already so wont be delisted..they may havepromised him he will be on senior list or a third year as a rookie..it can be either but either way he will be on the list.

At the moment he is a better footballer than anything we have to play the Taylor role even part time. He was actually reasonable before a mini implosion at Melbourne a couple of years ago which I think is just as much about personnel decisions they made. I think he is one who we could possible get far improved productivity out of. Not aiming to be a star, a role player. A stop gap.

I can see the logic. I just do not want to hold up the development of guys like SDek and Kruger etc. I see the logic but I fear he would only come in and push those kids further back. Id like to get games into Sdek asap, as soon as he is ready... obviouslhe will not be taking on the bears for years yet but lest see how it can work. Freedie is a interesting one...one would think nlow he has to develop somewhere else , like KPD ... there is no spot in the forwardline till Hawk retires

Thats my thinking. Not sure if we have 1 or 2 picks but really the last thing we need is to add kids that will join the que. There really is no que for young rucks.

Depends on what we do and now the afl says you can carry more picks than you have listspots we may not decide until the night e.g. if we see someone we like we live trade in back at 18..use 18 and 51..if no one we like use 51 and pass on 96.

If total list numbers go to 43 as mooted then wr only have to delist one more player to use 2 picks my money would be brownless or maybe tarca..i think jarvis shows promise and fort has to stay given our lack of rucks. Obviously if steven retires thats the one pick there.

This is why we waned to stock up on 2021 picks we wanted another 12 months to assess which of our fringe kids to delist.

Agree I think he’d be a good pickup to help out if needed. Not a star but he can play a role and would be better out of the demons.

Mcdonald is ok but he is a poor kick and we have too many of those in our backline already. We do probably need a backup kpd though as if hendo gets injured we are exposed unless dek is ready (unless sav is going back there)..id look at frawley actually if we had a list spot..his manager sounded like he is open to playing on.

I could appreciate that but I don't think the drop in cap is necessarily the issue as there would be multiple teams in that position, there is something far more going on here. It might not even be cap related.

I also don't think the AFL would hang teams out to dry because of a cap reduction. If anything I could see the AFL saying okay well your only over the cap because of covid, don't worry about it. The $2m figure that they have dropped is a massive amount and just doesn't make sense.

I just don't see how they miscalculate by $2m.

They got caught out because they still have to pay beams the next 2 years..langdon is on big money but cant be medically retired as he is contracted..i think they wanted to push degoey out but after his police charges no club wanted to trade for him and no one wanted to take cox/thomas etc money off the books either so they simply had to trade whoever else clubs would take to stay under the cap.

Definitely will need to hunt around for a key back to rookie list. Two reasons being one if we get an injury to a defender and two if we need Blitz to go into the ruck.

Obviously this is easier said than done post trade period but we have seen how our system can shelter guys as long as they are the right height. Maybe SDK is ready and just goes straight in.

We'd have to have a serious look at guys like Oscar McDonald and Sam Durdin to bring in as rookies. Oscar McDonald is the one. 196 cm, 24, 80 games

Sav is a FF, not a ruck. Relief minutes maybe.

Will be a great combo Sav + Cameron after hawkins

I dont think Fort is up to it and i think blicavs has to play back with taylor gone. I doubt stanley can play 22 games his body needs management so at some stage sav will be no1 ruck next year unless we take a mature age ruck as a DFA leading up to the draft.

Were not the only club to opt out of this draft. So cashing out until next year could have been a masterclass from Wells and Co. Even more so if there will be a few mid season drafts.

West coast..adelaide..brisbane..heaps of clubs cashed out of this draft on purpose.

In relation to our weakest role coverage ..I feel we have more KPP coverage than ruck

KPP we are ok as hawkins cameron sav even jenkins is serviceable. Plus kreuger might be ready.

Ruck we have basically nothing behind stanley except Fort and KPD we have only DEK if hendo gets injured or loses form.

If we delist a fringe player or two and add any mature players as DFAs i would expect it to be a key defender or a ruck.

Yeah but I think we can be competitive even if we're rolling Fort through there.

We are going to need an empty forward line next year to give Cameron and Hawk space. When it rebounds out it'll have speed on it. If it ends up we have a kid too skinny on say Lynch, or a guy who hasn't played enough with the defenders to know how to block up space in front of a Kennedy we would be in much more trouble I feel.

I agree and id be trying to take a mature KPD as a DFA. Hendo has been very good but he is not always durable and DEK is still a kid.

A lot of us spent most of last season wondering whether we were too tall down back... I think we're fine. Oscar McDonald is rubbish, Kolo or Henry playing tall are much better options.

Rather we throw SDK or Kreuger into the deep end, against lower ranked sides, and let them really develop and get their shot.

Reckon all of SDK, Coop, Freddy, Okunbor, Taheny and Evans get their shot at one point or another next year - at the expense of Kolo, Tuohy, Rohan, Sel, Dahl, Miers and Hendo.

Wells said it best earlier - "we've already got guys in the queue that we're excited about, who we think can be great players for Geelong"

No point wasting a list spot on a DFA when there's a mid-season draft now anyway

we have the choice of finding a way to assess them in the side... or when they run OOC will lose some. No Crouch mean CS gets more of a chance.. same holds with sdek ... although he will probably not be ready to muscle up ..he can mark no issue. If we have a bad run with KPD it could catch us I guess ..but the reverse is if we don't then we will struggle to find games for the players we need to see.

I just mean for what that guy suggested.

Were we getting a 2nd back no matter what and got another because of 20 or did 20 net us the 2?
Seems like we gave GWS the choice of 13 & 15 with GWS FR2 coming back to us, or 13, 15 & 20 with GWS and ESS FR2's coming back to us (there was a report that the Cameron deal was hinging on the Caldwell deal, ie. the ESS FR2). We would have been satisfied with either, and to be honest I think we ended up with the more favorable outcome, despite the headlines reading "Cats Cave". The way GWS spruiked the 3 first rounders as a historic deal makes me think they were swayed that way for PR as much as value.

Our FR4 was the Demtel.

I will add, as an avid NBA fan, death riding other teams when you own their future draft picks is a hell of a lot of fun, and can lead to wonderful outcomes (thank you Brooklyn for Jayson Tatum).

All eggs one basket (2021)

2020 is so unique we have no baseline or reference guide.

How the shortened games, bubbles, lack of Victorian games the extended break

Had a great season realistically Geelong I think perhaps overachieved and run into a very good footballside in the GF.

Jeremy Cameron is the most talented key forward you can find at prime age been an issue for many years a second target.

In a vacuum from a nostalgic point of view Higgins and Smith classy wingman and half forwards with skill would be great additions.

Realistically smith 31 and Higgins is 32 years of age will turn 33 during 2021 so if you got 15 games each out of them at the right time could be great or a timebomb .

I mean listen the best 22 will consist with probably 14 players over 28 at times. Un chartered territory so it probably ends with Geelong defying the young legs theory justifying everything and winning a flag in 2021. Or it ends in a bit of a mess can't blame them for going at it though because realistically it's pointless to tear it down and go halfway with this playing list profile.

I have no opinion of how this ends I shall just watch
