It’s actually hard to pin point when they actually were the biggest isn’t it?
Richmond obviously have always been huge as with Carlton & Essendon hence the big 4 theory.

To say who is the biggest out of that is impossible to say until all 4 are actively competing again.

The undeniable fact right now tho is West Coast have the most paid up members & with a waiting line as long as the Nullabor to join the club it shows the Eagles to be the biggest supporter base and most preferred club to be a part of in the comp.

This is possibly the most significant statement I’ve seen on this thread. It’s difficult to know as club strength performance on many of the noted performance indicators is highly influenced by on field results only.

Richmond have won 3 of the last 4 flags, of course they’d be leading on many performance metrics like membership, attendances and even operating revenue as a result. However until 2013 (when they started playing finals), they weren’t in the top 4 in many of these. They certainly were not top two on attendances for example, often trailing Essendon despite the latter playing out of a restricted capacity stadium..

It was only 2-3 years ago some were seriously making a case for Hawthorn being a bigger club than Richmond! That was quickly and rightly dispelled when form lines reversed.

Stadium capacities will always complicate the arguments further.

It’s not as clear cut as some would believe.

Collingwood have a large following all over Australia. The largest following of any club NATIONALLY.

Northern states most people don’t care about AFL and in WA most fans follow the eagles and in SA it’s Adelaide.

Number of supporters from a phone survey or by looking at pet memberships, GA memberships, etc the number can be misleading or fudged.

If we look at money generated per ticket or member it's not even close.

West Coast is a true powerhouse. Maybe the only real powerhouse team in the country.
