With a defence budget of $15B USD a year & 300,000 active personal a few hundred F/16's and Dassault Mirage's in the locker, it's not exactly like invading Mud Island.

They'd be arguably the most capable armed forces to be invaded anywhere in any conflict since Vietnam.

Any war would likely last years. The problem from China's perspective is that Taiwan is 150km from the Chinese mainland. Any serious invasion is going to be met with some serious repercussions for neighbouring Chinese cities from the Taiwanese airforce.

Quanzhou is one of the biggest manufacturing regions on the planet, if not the biggest. Taiwan could cripple the Chinese economy in a few days in the event of a full scale invasion if they carpet bombed factories and plants which are probably within range of some their attack helicopters, let alone their fighter aircraft.

They have a fairly strong navy also from a global perspective.

A Taiwan/China war would be a total disaster. It would easily be the worst since WW2 if it were to occur. Taiwan would get wiped out in the end, but take a decent part of China's coastal cities and it's economy down with it.

I completely agree but the CPP view is that Chinas civil war of 1949 still hasn’t ended and any hopes of a peaceful unification were dashed by HK.

I’d argue you can’t really split Chinese dynasties and political legitimacy, culturally they go hand in hand.
So when Xi was voted as chairmen for life, one of his promises was reunite China. If he fails to do this, it will be seen as a failure to CCP rule..

This opportunity probably won’t come again when you have American infighting and the world dealing with a pandemic. It might the one and only chance to take advantage of the situation without global interference.

so you can see my point, if the CPP fails to actually take Taiwan, all hell will break lose on the mainland, as how is a rising China meant to be a super power when it can’t even deal with a wayward province.

Ms. Green is among a group of tenants in rent-regulated apartments once owned by Mr. Trump’s father who have filed a lawsuit against the president and his siblings, accusing the Trumps of a decade-long fraud to win artificially high rent increases through an invoice-padding scheme.
The scheme, first revealed in a 2018 investigation by The New York Times, involved tacking at least 20 percent onto the cost of materials purchased for the apartments, with Mr. Trump, his siblings and a cousin splitting the extra proceeds. The maneuver generated millions of dollars for each sibling, with no work required. While the siblings were still liable for income taxes, the maneuver allowed them to evade far-higher gift and estate taxes on part of the fortune they received from their father.
But the tenants paid a price. New York laws governing rent-regulated apartments allow owners to increase rents based on the costs of major capital improvements. The Trumps based their applications for rent hikes on the artificially increased invoices, so a boiler that actually cost $50,000 would generate a rent increase as if it had cost $60,000.

The lawsuit could pose a significant financial threat to Mr. Trump and his family. If the plaintiffs’ lawyers win approval of class-action status, any potential judgment would encompass every person who paid rent in more than 14,000 rent-regulated apartments since 1992.

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has ordered the removal of most US military and security personnel from Somalia, where they have been conducting operations against the Al-Shabaab militant group, the Pentagon said Friday (Dec 5).

The Pentagon said Friday that some of the personnel being pulled out of Somalia will be reassigned to neighboring countries, particularly Kenya and Djibouti, to allow cross-border operations against extremist groups in conjunction with partner forces.

"The US will retain the capability to conduct targeted counterterrorism operations in Somalia, and collect early warnings and indicators regarding threats to the homeland," it said.

The US Africa Command has maintained around 700 troops, personnel from other US security operations, and private security contractors in Somalia, both conducting attacks on Al-Shabaab and training Somali forces.
