Gibbons is competing with Fisher, Fogarty and Betts. At least one misses, all of which you could argue for or against. Given the competition I wouldn't suggest any are locks at this stage.

Gibbons still isn't a mid, and doesn't fit there

2 time JJ Liston Trophy winner yet still not a mid? And I definitely think we can still fit him in.

2021 midfield :

M - Walsh, Cripps, SPS
R - TDK, Ed, Williams
I/C - Setters, Gibbons

Play Murphy on the HFF, and use Willo as a defender rotating through a wing. That gives Gibbons a perfect spot on wing + on-ball. It would be a waste of talent to play him just like Cunners as small forwards.

He's a mid at VFL level.
At AFL level he's a forward.

But Gibbons isn't in the middle, so how will he be pushed out of there?

True.

He does move up the ground sometimes during the course of play, but yea, your right in saying he hasn't been playing in the middle.

More a half forward that might push up the ground.

Can't wait to see how the boys have gone about their training during the off-season.

Right now, the midfield is the hardest group to select the best 6-7 players for.

If the likes of Dow, Stocker, Kemp, Philp, O'brien, Williamson, Cuningham or SPS are able to physically develop to the next level, they'll probably be putting their hands up to push the likes of Murphy, Ed and Newnes out of the midfield.

Nous alone isn't enough when you're small, not overly quick, or don't have elite kicking ability.

Sure I read that last year, from you and many others, yet, played every game he was fit, despite this so called " we have better options"

Interesting how you only highlight a players weak points, those of who you want replaced, rather than highlighting all aspects of their game

It's like you are more interested in having the players you want, rather than what's best for the team

Looking forward to once again having this discussion end of next year

Looks like the mooted back 6 is Doc, Weiters, Saad, Plow, Jones & Marchbank; courtesy of A.Saad welcome.
If you take out Marchbank and add Williams this could be the best backline in the AFL. AA contention for 4 of them. 3 have been in the squad before. 1 has been an AA and another deserves to be as the best CHB in the game.

After listening to the interviews with the different line coaches over the past week, this is my current expected side for round one. (Obviously a lot of water to go under the bridge between now and then.)

B: Plowman Jones Docherty
HB: SPS Weitering Saad
C: Walsh Cripps Williamson
HF: Martin Casboult Fisher
F: Betts McKay McGovern
R: De Koning Setterfield Williams
I/C: Marchbank Curnow Murphy Gibbons
Next in line:
- Dow Cuningham Fogarty > pushing hard for a spot over Murphy/Gibbons/Curnow
- Newman > pushing against Marchbank, SPS
- Newnes > competing with Williamson
- Silvagni > competing with McGovern

I know they want to get Murphy to 300, but we could easily play SPS in the midfield and bring in Newman to take on his spot on the back flank. So much better in my opinion.

Positional battle for the deeper small forward role, where we might just rotate heavily through there and instead pick players more on their midfield potential to overwhelm the opposition. Wait no, we're not that smart, never mind.

Long term depth and development issues are clearly apparent with key position defenders and small defenders. I don't see Ramsay being that for us, nor do I see Cottrell offering enough at senior level without a dramatic change to his disposal technique and ability.

Huge amount of pressure on Honey, Gibbons, Betts and O'Brien to start performing now.

On the plus side, there is a lot of opportunity for Jack to develop his inside midfield craft, and the likely emergence of Kemp sees him as a more readily interchangeable option for the 22 than McGovern, who needs to start seriously delivering in terms of work rate (thank Bolton for that one).

~ Kemp shouldn't be chosen as a key forward ahead of Levi, Gov or JSOS.
~ Betts takes the FP spot over Cunners (should be played as a mid only)
~ One of Newman or Marchbank takes the defensive rotation on the bench over Dow.

Going to be a beauty of a season 21. Surely there will be at least one major surprise selection be it Marchbank, Cunners/Dow in mid or Fogarty up fwd. The surprise will be in who makes way for these players. SPS, Murphy, Gibbons most at risk.

Personally hoping the surprise is not Pitto over TDK. One has massive upside and one doesn’t. Don’t have an issue with Pitto playing for us....it just doesn’t excite me at all.

  • Kemp wasn't, and McGovern and JSOS aren't key forwards.
  • I've literally put Cuningham and Betts in a positional battle for clearly discussed reasons, but you've clearly neither noticed, nor read that.
  • Dow isn't selected in any defensive rotation, whatsoever. That's for SPS, Williams and the rest of the outside midfield unit to sort out.

But cheers for talking down to me and in absolutes when dealing with my opinion in an opinion thread! Very kind of you.

Blaming Bolton for Gov's lack of workrate over the last 18 months while Teague has been senior coach?
Sorry, missed this. Blaming Bolton for demanding a player of his type over and over until we overpaid for one, and an injury prone one, no less.
