List Mgmt. Carlton's 2020 Draft Thread

Caught up with a friend of mine who is in the recruitment team for a Melbourne based club. I asked him what he thought of our draft and he said that we should be very pleased with the outcome. Their club rated both Durdin & Carroll higher than where we drafted them. Said that Durdin had all the capabilities to be a very good small forward, and had the aerobic capacity to play as a high half forward not just a forward pocket. As for Carroll, said that his club rated him in the top 20. Thought that he would be drafted anywhere from 17 onwards. He was definitely on their radar but they needed a certain type of player, so even though he was available at their pick they went with the type of player they were after. Said that Carroll was a little inconsistent this year at times, but will be a very good midfielder down the track. He also said that other teams had mentioned that Carlton had done very well with our picks.

So like most other clubs continue to prove - It's not always best player.........obviously.
Even Dodoro outlined Essendons 'strategy' in picking the talls, first.
To have no strategy entering a draft would highlight incompetence of that club and a lack of confidence in that clubs' development processes.

It's somewhat annoying that in the most we judge who did well in the trade period and draft periods separately, when in fact they're most often bound.
Essendon did well in the draft? Of course they did well. They lost two of their best players.
We can lose Cripps, McKay and Weitering next year and I'll be we'll do well in the draft. :)

Interesting to hear Durdin has the aerobic capacity to play high half forward. I recall reading he had some issues with his hammies. Maybe thats just something that can be managed better at AFL level but I think if he can really hone his forward craft under Eddie he'll be a much more complete forward pocket.

Always best available in the draft, trade for needs

The Lone Ranger strikes again :)

Are all clubs just a little dumb and you have something over them?
You keep getting shown upon this stance, but you won't admit being wrong. Admit being wrong. It's cathartic....you'll see :)

If that's your antiquated view that's fine, but just don't tell others that there's only one way and please......don't do that 'ALWAYS" thing.

As opposed to you telling us how it should be done?😁😁😁😁

Show me where it is wrong ?😁😁😁😁😁

Here's my motivation on this an other matters, where you're concerned and I am sorry that I notice you when I just wish to view the post and not the poster, but...

1. You find no issue repeatedly telling others hey are wrong in their opinions...yet somehow and magically you value yours above anyone elses.
2. Recruiters and list managers have told us over and again their particular methodologies and views on this matter....but somehow it doesn't mean much to you and you repeat a well-worn cliché as though it's a fact. It's not a fact.....it's your opinion and it doesn't sync up with what clubs are telling us.

You're entitled to stick to your religion, but the evidence just doesn't support it.

Doesn't take you long to play the man or deflect

1. You sprouting all year that we will lose best 22 because they can't play their preferred position, or how do we fit all these mids in, or why would the Crows bid on JUH. Wrong on counts. But you value your views above everyone else

2. Give me an example where a list manager has drafted based on needs within the first 2 rounds and that player out performed players taken after

Your religion is based on what people say, rather than having your own opinion. You are merely a sycophant

Example: Before the Dogs game, "I just don't see it"

You are reactionary, and shift with each passing breeze

Heard a discussion in the lead up to draft with kinnear beatson talking to cal twomey and saying just that.

not sure if on road to the draft podcast or the afl.com.au draft specials on the Tuesday/Wednesday of last week.

Arr0w, HARKER...

Wasn't the thunder dome designed for you two?

Harker avoids every likely situation, by sprouting his constant propaganda and when called out out waves the white flag by deflecting constantly

"We were targeting only small forwards" added only an aging Betts

"We will lost best 22 because they can't play their preferred position " lost none

"We will lose best 22 midfielders because we can't fit them all in", lost none, yet we added more

"Crows won't bid on JUH", but they did

Etc, etc

Don't worry, Harker will tell everyone otherwise yet have no facts to back up his propaganda

Is that your opinion on what should happen or what you believe takes place?

Why reach for a player based on needs? Recruiter dont, it is a fallacy

We wanted/yearning for pace and footskills, we added Wiiliams, Saad and Fogarty

We took a small forward in the 2nd round, where they should be taken and Carroll that was a known slider, hence "best available"

This I agree with when you put it like that. I dont think we reached.

Reached for Durdin?
Carroll fell in our lap?

Depends on how you look at things.
We had certainly listed both types as requirements pre-draft, and what do you know, a KPD come rookie draft day.
Going by the talk since we were certainly keen on Durdin and kept that under wraps.
Carroll we got him without trading picks but again I think we had to have done the work.
Parks is the one that excites me most so far.

I think there’s merit for both trains of thought but in a year where there’s a lot more guess work I’d say we’ve probably done well with best available. If we had a better spread of picks maybe targeting needs like karmas recruiter friends did may have played a little more in but think Carroll from the short eye test seems well balanced and has reasonable production (from memory wa competitions usually have lower disposal counts) to suggest we’ve got a player provided our development improves - which with the moves the club has made suggest it will.

Without knowing how these kids interviewed, so purely on upside, I would have taken Winder or Ford at that pick

Carroll was a no brainer

FWIW - I recall Ablett on Fox saying Peel coaches had “wrapped their arms around” Winder.

Sounded like he is very high maintenance.

Durdin may have less upside but also less risk.

Real conundrum for recruiters.
