Not sure about the need for another ruck. Assuming Stanley plays 15 or so games then Fort and Abbott would have ruck duties in the VFL with these young blokes rotating some minutes. If we get injures then we could just bring in a ruck from the local league (if the rules allow it).

Imassuming its about training as much as its about playing. What ever the clubs thinks is the best for their development.

Darcy Lang has signed on to play for our VFL side this season.

Good to have him and abbott back.

Just need an experienced defender or two (unless black is playing vfl again) and another mid i think.

Not sure how much we'll realistically see of Abbott in the VFL and reading a few articles last year, I get the impression he's looking for more balance between work, life and football commitments

He's starting a new job, returning to play for Grovedale locally and then VFL when required - doubtful he'll be first choice selection in the VFL, but more a backup option for when others aren't available, managed etc

Ideally , we get games into the two kids we have drafted...we need them ready in 2023 imo...and if they are not up to it we need to find out. Balance of course..we tend to be careful about over playing kids.

We don't see Lang as some sort of 3rd chance do we?

I guess it about balance.. that 2002 flag group still had some mature names in it
Interesting that he’s training with the seniors.

Wondering if it's cause we've had a few senior guys injured at various times this pre-season, so it may help with numbers for drills or match practice setups etc

Who knows. He needs more physicality (which can come from an older body) and confidence, which may come from not having to be a star small forward or midfielder.

I'm sure between that and the reduced list sizes they need to get VFL guys in - there was another player in the clips released this week wearing 13 who I don't recognise - and it might even be something as simple as their availability in the middle of a work day.

Apparently Jackson Thurlow has signed on for our VFL side too.

Confirmation of the signing of Thurlow & Oliver Tate.

Think it actually says a lot about that club that players who have been members of our AFL side and traded to a new team are happy to come back & play VFL for the club when they have been moved on from their new AFL club

Jackson Thurlow signs with Geelong’s VFL team

Geelong has made another key signing for its 2021 VFL season, gaining a third former Cats AFL player.
Toby Prime, Geelong Advertiser

A third former Geelong player has returned to GMHBA Stadium to play VFL this year, with Jackson Thurlow to again pull on the hoops.

His signature has also sparked a flurry of local clubs attempting to gain his services.

Thurlow joins ex-Cats Darcy Lang and Ryan Abbott in returning to the region for 2021.

The utility played 46 games with Geelong and was traded to Sydney at the end of 2018, making 17 appearances with the Swans.

Geelong VFL operations manager Nathan Tweddle said Thurlow, 26, had “the pull to come back and live in the area” after being delisted by Sydney last year.

“He loved his time at Geelong and built some great relationships and friendships in the area,” Tweddle said.

“That was what probably got him over the line in the end. He was keen to come back and live in the Geelong region.

“It matched up nicely that he’d play footy with us as well.”

Tweddle said Thurlow, who will return from his native Tasmania by the end of the month, was yet to sign with an aligned club.

“There’s been a few clubs calling (about him). We’ll sort that out at some point,” he said.

“He’s not that keen to worry about a local club at this point. He wants to come over and play VFL footy.

“Given he spent some time playing VFL while he was here as an AFL player, he certainly rated our program and the people involved and Shane (O’Bree) as a coach so he was really keen to get back and play some good second-tier footy.”

Tweddle said Geelong has filled 21 of its 30 available VFL positions, including the addition of Williamstown player Oliver Tate.

Tate had joined Leopold full-time for 2021 but will continue in the state league with the Cats.

Tweddle said Tate had expressed a desire to continue playing VFL.

Geelong has until April 5 to finalise its list.

One wonders what and the whereabouts of "the hyphen" George H-S ? There were some media reports and coaches talk at Sturt (his junior club), that he was in the mix to be back at Sturt for the season ahead. But no, hasn't been sighted. Must be staying up in se Queensland....

Is Gore and Black still on the list? That would mean 5 ex AFL listed players on the VFL roster.
