Alright, time to get out of summer mode. We're under 2 months from the scheduled start of the new season of Aussie Rules Football and, hopefully this time, we can go watch the games (unless you're from Queensland since that was never a problem to a point up there meaning nothings changed). So what better way to get back into the petty squabbling about who is better than who than to go through each section of the field and determine who, as a group, can be considered Melbourne's Best 22. Everyone has an opinion on who is and isn't fit to be getting games, so let's put it to poll. There'll be 4 polls, 1 each for Mids, Defenders, Forwards and other, put up every Sunday until I run out of threads.

In Part 1, vote for up to 6 players in the poll to fill these positions.

C: Nick Smith | Josh Wagner | Troy Davis
R: Héritier Lumumba | James Sellar | Jay Kennedy-Harris

In the poll above are every player I've seen listed as a midfielder or ruckman in SuperCoach, DreamTeam and the Best 22 thread. Happy Voting! :smallfooty:

BTW, I was reading the previous ones Headless did to see the rise and fall of players, someone mentioned there was a 2010 edition. Well, it was more like a Post-2009 Best 22 that Crimson Azure did since it was done between the 2009 H&A season ending but before the 2010 draft (so no Scully/Trengove automatically in). So I'm gonna post it here with all others under the spoiler tag.

Went Gawn Trac Clarry Viney Langdon Brayshaw. Would love to have squeezed Harmes in but I think it would have been at expense of Brayshaw. And if picking a best 22 Harmes can play forward.

Ha, I did the reverse and put Harmes in for Trac for similar reasons. Though in hindsight I think Trac playing mostly mid, with stints forward would be better than Harmes doing that role.

Who plays the not-Langdon wing in your teams?

Trac/Harmes, Viney, Oliver and Brayshaw have all been tried on a wing and haven't been suited in my opinion.

A return to the MCG in '21 will show Langdon's value even more I reckon and we need something similar on the other side. I've gone for Salem - his running numbers are excellent and he has good disposal. With Riv coming on it's time to see what Salem can do in a more offensive role.

Also, poll needs a TMac/LJac option

I reckon personally they’ll go for Tmac/Jackson or maybe Baker. In the mids I picked I just don’t know. Assuming those guys would be rotated through. Particularly Harmes and Brayshaw. But yeah I get they aren’t wingers. And haven’t worked out in there before. Although can’t remember them specifically trying Harmes.

not sure it really matters, we only play the Langdon side of the ground anyway.

Gawn, Petracca, Oliver, Harmes, Langdon and Salem.

Brayshaw and Viney to rotate through as relief ... Brayshaw off the bench and Viney from the forward line. I feel for team balance Viney is best suited as a pressure forward where his tackling will help keep the ball locked in the forward line. Really want to see Harmes return to his old midfield role.

I reckon we'll see Melksham trialled on the other wing a bit through the preseason. He's been training with the mids going by DL training reports and Goody loves him. Historically (although not seen since 2018) he has been good one on one and his ball use inside 50 can tear teams apart.

Personally, I'd prefer others as I'm not sure he can recapture that 2018 form but if they do try this and it works it will be massive for Brown, Weid, Fritsch and the boys.

Went with: Gawn, Oliver, Petracca, Viney, Langdon, Brayshaw.

Even though on paper the engine room needs a runner to compliment Langdon as Oliver/Viney/Brayshaw are too same-y, and also Petracca throughout the year will likely be listed at HF a la D. Martin.

Trac is gonna have to play more across half forward - he’s just so dangerous there, arguably as much as anyone else in the comp. Gus very likely to be traded at the end of this season I’d say. Just play him in the guts full-time and boost that trade value baby.

C: Harmes Brayshaw Langdon
R: Gawn Oliver Viney
