Dear Aph,

Our vision for a re-imagined Ikon Park continues to move forward.

We are pleased to inform you that after an extensive design process, Stage One of the Ikon Park redevelopment will shortly commence with the proud support of both the Victorian Government and Australian Government and approval of the City of Melbourne.

Stage One will focus on high performance areas of Ikon Park, with internal works to include the establishment of:
 • New and refurbished AFLW and AFL locker rooms, situated alongside each other
 • New and expanded medical rooms
 • New and expanded gym
 • Upgraded administration area
These works will commence in the coming weeks, so as to minimise the disruption to both of our female and male football programs as we head into the pre-season periods for both our teams.

Furthermore, we are pleased to advise that the Victorian Planning Minister has approved and gazetted the planning scheme amendment for Ikon Park. These special planning controls are a significant step in delivering the masterplan for the redevelopment of our facility.

We will now proceed to lodge our Stage Two plans with the City of Melbourne for their consideration and approval.

This is the largest, fully-funded infrastructure project for Ikon Park, to remain the home of the Carlton Football Club and the home of AFLW. The objective is to provide fully integrated, elite training and education facilities for our athletes, which will give us a substantial competitive advantage when attracting players and staff to our club.

This project is funded under the Australian Government’s CDG Programme and the Victorian State Government Women and Girls in Sport initiative.

We look forward to sharing further updates with you, as we progress with the approval process and construction.

This is an exciting time for the Club. Thank you for your continued support.

Would it kill them to share a render or some plans?

They've been going at it for some time now

I've mentioned this previously, but it's a shame there isn't more room for spectators in front of the new development. Kills the sound/atmosphere a bit at that end of the ground when there's a practice or AFLW match on.

Dear Aph,

Today our football club is pleased to announce a net operating profit of $34,639 for 2020.

This operating result has contributed to us declaring a statutory net profit position of $3,651,912 for the year ended 31 October 2020.

Due to the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our gate receipts and other revenue streams, our operating revenues declined by over 36 per cent. However, the overwhelming and record-breaking support of all our members and many other stakeholders, means that the Club will not require additional financial assistance from the AFL, nor will it increase its debt position.

Despite the restrictions imposed on game-day attendance, our membership base grew by four per cent to reach a record-high 67,035 members. Our members stepped up like never before to ensure that the Club remained financially independent.

This outstanding show of faith in the direction of the Club contributed to our cash position almost doubling to $11.8 million (up from $6m in 2019), placing the Club in a strong starting position for 2021. The Ikon Park redevelopment has not been impacted and is proceeding as planned.

There was also continued, year-on-year growth through our non-traditional revenue streams of Carlton IN Business and the Carlton College of Sport, while the Club’s commercial partners were profound in their support throughout the entire year.

Our football club’s ability to handle the extreme financial challenges of 2020 and to deliver a positive financial result is a testament to the effort and contributions made by everyone associated with the football club. This is an exceptional achievement of which we should all be proud.

As a Board, we have maintained focus on the 10 key targets contained within our strategic plan. This has allowed us to navigate the difficulties and challenges of this year, whilst maintaining a clear focus on our key priorities.

I would like to commend our players, coaches and staff. Everyone at Carlton has felt the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Salaries were cut, players and staff spent months away from their families while living in hubs and many of our staff were stood down.

Sadly, the financial implications of the COVID-19 pandemic on our club and across the competition, forced us to implement a restructure, with almost 30 per cent of our workforce having their roles made redundant. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those staff for their service. We wish them the best for the future.

Dear Aph,

As 2020 comes to a close, we wanted to take one final opportunity to let our members know how important your support has been this season. It is a true testament to your loyalty and passion for the Carlton Football Club that we finish 2020 in a healthier financial position than we started, notwithstanding the fact that we have navigated our way through a worldwide pandemic that has wreaked havoc from both a health and an economic perspective.

Last week we reported to you a net operating surplus of $34,639 for 2020, which contributed to a statutory net profit position of $3,651,912 for the year ended 31 October 2020. Importantly, this result saw a significant improvement of our cash position and we did not draw down on any additional debt or require AFL assistance in 2020. In fact, largely thanks to our members, we now find ourselves confident that we will retire our $4 million of remaining historical debt in 2021, putting us on track to be debt-free for the first time since 1996.

Clearing our debt would see us tick off the first of our 10 key targets that we set out to achieve within our five-year strategic plan back in 2019. Another of our strategic plan targets was to effectively double our membership base to 100,000 members by 2023. We could not have got off to a better start this season with more than 62,000 members already joining for season 2021. This ensures we will smash our all-time membership record and puts us well on track to reach 80,000 members in 2021, which would represent an increase of almost 30,000 members since we launched our strategic plan. Again, an incredible effort by all of our members and a glowing endorsement of the progress we are making both on and off the field.

These results are evidence of the improvements we have made in all areas of the Club in recent times. There’s no doubting that a stable, skills-based Board and management team have provided strong governance of the Club and assisted in managing the uncertainty provided by the COVID-19 pandemic this year, whilst continuing to deliver our strategic plan.

We would also like to take this opportunity to again thank our sponsors, headlined by our AFL Co-Major partners, Hyundai and Virgin Australia, along with our corporate partners, coteries, and Carlton IN Business members for their outstanding support in 2020.

As communicated to members in recent months, from a Masterplan perspective we have commenced Stage One of construction, which focuses on our new football department, while we have now also received approval for the planning scheme amendment from the Victorian Planning Minister and we are currently working with the City of Melbourne on design approvals for Stage Two.

By April next year, we expect to have brand new and refurbished AFLW and AFL locker rooms, situated alongside each other and in close proximity to our new football department, where our men’s and women’s football programs will become fully integrated for the first time. The first stage of our Masterplan works will also deliver a new and expanded gym as well as an upgraded administration area that will be ready for our non-football department staff to return to in the New Year once COVID-19 restrictions are eased.

From a football perspective, our AFLW players continue their pre-season in strong form, with Carlton champion Kade Simpson joining the Game Changers as a forwards assistant coach after an illustrious 18-year career at the Blues. With the release of the AFLW fixture last week, the countdown is on for Round 1 where we will once again return to the big stage in the season opener against rivals Collingwood in a home game at Ikon Park on Thursday 28 January.

With seven games telecast on Channel 7 free to air, the AFLW fixture is a win for all Carlton fans across the country. Four out of the first six games of the season will be held at Ikon Park – the spiritual home of the Blues – with key matches scheduled against the Western Bulldogs in Round 2 (Pride game) and Melbourne in Round 5 as part of the League’s inaugural Indigenous Round.

Our annual Carlton Respects game is a significant occasion and once we nominate which game this will be, we will be sure to inform our members and supporters as we proudly continue to raise awareness of gender equality for the prevention of violence against women.

Our congratulations also go to Tayla Harris who was recently named the Young Victorian of the Year. Tayla achieved the honour for not only her talents on the field but her selfless work off it and she is a most-deserving recipient of this award. We commend her for the way she has epitomised our club values, while also forging her own path as an ambassador who continues to work towards impacting societal change.

From an AFL perspective, our first-fourth-year players commenced pre-season training earlier this month and it’s been fantastic to see the playing group back, while also welcoming new faces in Adam Saad, Zac Williams, Lachie Fogarty and our new draftees to the Club. We also welcome back recently retired ruckman Matthew Kreuzer who has been appointed as AFL ruck coach.

Earlier this week we also signed a further six players to our new standalone Carlton Reserves side for next year, with 14 players in total committed to pulling on the Navy Blue guernsey next year in the new-look 2021 VFL and East Coast Second-Tier Competition. With standalone teams now in place across second-tier men’s and women’s programs, we feel that we are very well positioned to take full control of the development of all our AFL and AFLW players.

While we await the impending release of the AFL fixture, be sure to stay tuned to the Club’s social media accounts for all the latest information relating to the 2021 AFL season. In the meantime, our fans will get their first look at next year’s Carlton side in the 2021 AFL Community Series where we will play two matches over a three-week period as part of the pre-season schedule, first facing Port Adelaide in week one in Whyalla at Bennett Oval at 5:10pm AEDT, followed by Brisbane in week three at Ikon Park on Saturday 6 March at 4:40pm AEDT.

Of all the issues that COVID-19 caused in 2020, there is no doubt that the biggest disappointment was the inability for most of our members to get to the footy. It wasn’t the same without you and we can’t wait to have you back, cheering on both our AFL and AFLW teams.

Thanks once again for your incredible support in 2020 and we wish you and your families a wonderful festive season and a safe and Happy New Year.

Kind regards,

It needs to be said. President, CEO & board have done a great job so far. Dark navy blue skies ahead for quite some period of time. Congratulations to all involved.

Now that they've cleared up the historical debt, they can put more time and energy into finding alternative revenue streams to step away from pokies like they said.

Dear skadoosh,

We are incredibly proud to share with you today that the Club has broken yet another all-time membership record, and in what is a historic day, we can also confirm that the Club is now officially debt free.

The Board has ratified a management recommendation that saw the Club’s remaining $4 million of historical debt paid immediately. We have also informed the AFL that we will no longer be a financially assisted club of the competition.

This is the first time the Club has been debt free since 1996 and successfully ticks off the first of the 10 key targets that were outlined in the Club’s strategic plan , launched in 2019.

Fittingly, the historic milestone comes as 67,036 members of the Carlton family have signed on for 2021, surpassing the Club’s membership record for a fourth consecutive year.

This year, Carlton members have smashed the record just one week into the AFLW season and with still 45 days until the opening bounce of the 2021 AFL season.

The incredible show of faith by Carlton members has allowed the Club to now find itself in its strongest off-field position in more than two decades.

In line with the Club’s strategic plan, we continue to deliver on our commitments within each of our key targets. It goes without saying that these results announced today would not have been possible without the commitment and ongoing support of our members, staff, players, commercial partners and sponsors.
We simply cannot thank you enough, to have once again broken our all-time membership record set in 2020. This is something all Carlton members should be incredibly proud of. This latest record now keeps us on track to reach our target of 80,000 members in 2021, with the ultimate aim of securing 100,000 members by 2023, as outlined in the Club’s strategic plan.

The debt elimination now allows the Club a greater level of flexibility and capacity to invest further into its Ikon Park Master Plan redevelopment – the biggest redevelopment the Club has ever undertaken – and alternative revenue streams such as the Carlton College of Sport and Carlton IN Business, that continue to go from strength to strength.

Most importantly, it ensures that maximum investment continues in both our AFL and AFLW programs, giving our players, coaches, and members the very best opportunity to achieve on-field success.

I would like to take this opportunity to also acknowledge our Board for their continued leadership and expertise, and who in line with the Club’s strategic plan, have contributed to delivering on our commitment to clearing almost $7 million of debt in just three years.
Given the challenges faced throughout 2020, the unified effort displayed by our entire Club, including members who signed on for 2021, along with the efforts of our skills-based Board, Executive team and staff, led by CEO Cain Liddle, is what has contributed to our club being in an impressive position off-field that has strengthened the financial viability and stability of our Club.

We once again thank you for your continued support and look forward to a successful 2021.

Kind regards,

Weren't the staff cuts a mandated (or close enough to) move across the entire AFL?
Honestly no idea...just a couple of dichotomous releases in reasonably quick succession.

It's a big deal to be finally debt free, and yes kudos to the board...though clearly the $4m has been drawn from somewhere in the forward budget to meet the pre AGM timeslot.

Hmmm...regrettably we have had to make 30% of staff redundant.

Nekminit.

At a guess I'd say there is an AGM coming up.
Weren't the staff cuts a mandated (or close enough to) move across the entire AFL?

I would like to be the first to point out that none of the off-field turnaround can be attributed to the person in charge of the club's off-field fortunes, Cain Liddle.

Furthermore I would like to point out that it is extremely fortuitous that said turnaround seemed to coincide perfectly with his appointment. He was incredibly lucky to be appointed on the exact day the club turned itself around, all on its own.

:drunk:

I'd also like to point out that Mark LoGiudice is a useless president. He is a terrible public speaker and has no public presence, seemingly in spite of the fact that a president's work is almost exclusively done behind closed doors.

The fact that we have navigated sponsorships relatively well in recent years - including the collapse of Virgin - all stems from us having the best-looking jumper in the AFL and the fact that big business loves to throw money behind sporting clubs that have had poor culture and terrible community standing until recently.

The fact that we have appointed (what seem to be) the right people to turn around this club - pretty much since MLo joined - is purely due to attracting the best of the best with the perks that come with executive roles, such as the free Ikon Park parking and discounts at the Carlton Shop.

Also, he inherited his family business and is overweight. That needs to be pointed out as both make him unqualified to have an influential role at the club....
