Analysis Worst AFL contracts.

Sloane is not worth elite mid $. He's worth about $500k per year. Is grossly overpaid. Gov the worst contract for players with a Crows link, Sloane comfortably next. His contract much worse than Lever.
Just ask Sloane to say sorry to you for whatever he did.

Pies have clearly had some stinkers in recent years, but the most baffling one to me was Mason Cox's contract at the end of 2017 which was revealed during the 2019 trade period when the Bombers were interested in him.

By the end of 2017, Cox had played a total of 20 AFL games and was due for a promotion to the senior list.

Brisbane came sniffing. List manager at the time, Derek Hine, got spooked by this and gave Cox a three-year deal worth $550k/year. On top of that, there was a games played trigger for a fourth year, which he hit last year. Current list manager Ned Guy is apparently trying to negotiate an additional year beyond 2021 to spread the money.

I am absolutely bewildered at offering a Cat B rookie with 20 games worth of experience that sort of deal.
Bad news. Champion data says Cox is elite. He’ll get an extra 2 years @ $750K per year.

Yep, it's a shocker of a deal for the Pies. The only minor justification you could make is that Cox has a fair bit of marketing value and commercial appeal. We saw Eddie take advantage of the COVID situation and push the AFL/Pies into the US market, which over the past year or so has become quite aware of our game. Cox is nowhere near a $550k player.

Same would go for Majak Daw, although he was more a list clogger than a big contract. Bloke played 54 games in 9 years. He definitely had value for North in their multicultural market out west, being the first Sudanese player in the AFL. If his name was Brian Smith from Wodonga, there is no chance he lasts as long as he did as a rookie let alone senior listed player who took many, many seasons even to show glimpses of worth on field.

Have to consider though that each club must meet x% of the salary cap each year. Realistically, players like Sloane at lower-ladder sides will earn more since they're not competing with 10+ great teammates. Much safer for Adelaide to overpay Sloane than Seedsman, Keays etc

Kurt Tippet was miles worse than Buddy in value for money terms.

Stephen "Cogs" Coniglio is an absolute shocker in the making...
Kurt did well to get 2 supporter bases off side.

Have made it pretty clear that I think that 5 years for Rory Laird is too many.

Adelaide's revenge for Gibbs.

Settle. We all know the trade was.

Forget all the small pieces - Carlton got McGovern, Adelaide got 13 and McAdam, Sydney got points.

Sure it wasn't a top ten, but his point remains.

Adelaide has been able to accommodate forward Mitch McGovern's wish to join Carlton with a trade officially finalised on Wednesday morning.

As part of a three-way deal, the Crows receive pick No. 13, a future fifth-round selection from Carlton and highly-rated Sturt forward Shane McAdam, who the Blues were able to claim as one of their mature-aged pre-draft access picks.

Carlton gains McGovern and a future third-round selection from Adelaide, while Sydney receives selections No. 26 and 28 from the Blues as well as No. 40 from the Crows.
13 and McAdam is a wildly good return for McGovern. 13 for McAdam and McGovern is closer to balanced

Your point is true to an extent but he kicked 6 goals 4 behinds in his 4th game of AFL as a 22 year old.

Not many clubs would have given up on a physical, hugely athletic beast who had 10 scoring shots in their 4th game. That was 2013.

He was probably more impacted by the rape allegations than first thought. That hovered for 2014 and 2015.
Then delisted and put on the rookie list.

Then a couple of years in the wilderness before he turned into a very competent third tall down back. Then his suicide attempt and resultant injuries basically ended his form.

Overall he probably lost 4 of those 9 seasons to solid injury. 2013 PCL, 2017, 2019, 2020 were all solidly impacted. Considering our stocks at stages during these years, his obvious talent in terms of highlight reels and standout performances, and his eventual ability to play both ends, whilst spending a fair portion of that time on a rookie list, I'd say Brian Smith would have hung around too. Shaun McKernan hasn't ever kicked 6 and is at his 3rd club..

Aaron Hamill’s 5 year deal the saints gave him in 2003 came back to bite them.

This thread should be named after Israel Folau .

$1mill / year to run around like a headless chook

Marcus Adams to Brisbane hasn't been great given how many games he's missed, although Brisbane would've known it was a high risk move.

Played 11/46 games so far in his time with the Lions
