I think there’s a bit of hyperbole about the issues at Collingwood. Largely off a report that explores examples of racism involving CFC over 50 years and has identified a handful of incidents, and given scant reflection toward significant cultural shifts in recent years. Beyond that, what are the other issues impacting the club?

We’re strong financially.
We’ve moved out of pockies.
We’ve got a really strong community focus.
We continue to improve our facilities and connection with sports science.
We’ve established as strong and diverse a collection of ancillary sides as any league team. Who in fact has greater?

We can continue to grow in terms of racism but exactly what else needs to change?

no question.. i think the pie fans will prove to be the biggest problem.... in fact all fans. ..it's like the drug issue. THere's drug problems in the clubs but the problems in society are much worse

Read through the report’s recommendations. That’s what needs to change.

Composition of the Board, public profile of the president, whatever is needed to win flags....

And exactly which of them haven’t already been initiated?

Can you only imagine the media response.

We'll be accused of trying to cover up issues by appointing an indigineous president.

I don't reckon much of the media would be willing to go there. Bolt excepted. Criticising Collingwood for appointing her would also be suggesting that she isn't a qualified or appropriate candidate. Don't think many journos would want to be suggesting that about an indigenous Presidential appointment. I think most would want to be seen to support the decision - even if they were cynical about our motives. I hope we do appoint her though.

i'm not sure what the rules of the club are ....and we've had 20 years of people being placed in positions unelected.... but if the rules allow her to be appointed to fill a vacancy because Eddie leave .... then so be it.

She will face election at the end of 2022.

The problem might arise because the rest of the gang on the board like Waislitz and Korda is as guilty as McGuire, and i'm not sure those wasters should be hanging around if McGuire goes..... considering they have never faced an election...

Kennett went to Scotch College

Edit - State Premiers who went to Scotch:
  • Jim Bacon – Premier of Tasmania
  • John Cain – Premier of Victoria
  • Jeff Kennett – Premier of Victoria
  • Sir Harry Lawson – Premier of Victoria
  • John MacPherson – Premier of Victoria
  • Sir George Reid – Premier of NSW
  • William Shiels – Premier of Victoria
  • Vaiben Louis Solomon – Premier of South Australia
Scotch College was one of the original 6 private schools responsible for producing over 50% of Australia's politicians and public service heads prior to 1980.

I think she would do a good job of incorporating your interests into the future of the club. I think gay people like yourself will find a friend in Jodie...

I try to live my life by the motto WWMD - What would Mark do?

I didn't think Mark would have a go at someone by insinuating homosexuallity. Looks like I get to re-include homophobic slurs into my reportoire of acceptable insults.

well the gentleman was enquiring whether jodie was gay and I thought he was hoping that the club might make strides in that area. He seemed to interpreted my response as an indication that i was gay.

As far as homophobic slurs it hasn't cross my mind what sexuality she was... but i must admit that i did make a comment in an area that i dont know much about so i suppose that makes me homophobic.

just goes to show you, I would have thought that would be more of a problem. The word "****" meant something else in my early days... I havent had the benefit of recent school programs

Homonym.

Reckon one of those “original” schools would have been down compared to the others.

I studied 'Power in Australian Society' for a semester in 2nd year politics at Monash in 1972. The lecturer and tutor was John Playford, son of long serving SA premier Thomas Playford. John was a Marxist, his father extremely conservative.

John's theory on Australian politics and society was that it was dominated disproportionately by 6 private schools (5 in Melbourne, the other I think being Sydney Grammar) and 52 families. The details and figures for his theory and book were sourced from entries in Who's Who. The 6 private schools were attended by over 50% of Australian politicians and public service heads. Some of those people when they moved on became company directors and advisors, hence spreading and perpetuating the conservative values established by their upbringing and education. Meanwhile, members of the 52 families intermarried and their numbers and influence at the top spread.

John had long curly afro-shaped hair, smoked incessantly with the cigarette half way down his mouth and stared at the top right hand corner of the lecture theatre as he spoke. If you wished to go under the radar as a student, the prime spots in his lectures were the front seats or anywhere along the left side. There were 2 nuns in my tutorial and one obviously suffered from asthma, but JP smoked away in an airless room oblivious to her coughing and gagging for air and never required any of us to do anything other than listen to him.

You may be right. I cannot with absolute surety recall the schools - I think Melbourne, Scotch, Sydney Grammar, Wesley, Geelong Grammar and one other in Melbourne. Xavier? St Kevins? Somewhere else? I guess I am stretching the theory by assuming the figures remained the same in the latter half of the 70s. I was also never totally convinced that your baseline figures could be reliably sourced from Who's Who.

I would say if she wasn't of Indigenous descent we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Feels like a knee-jerk reaction to me.

But, there's always a but, if she is genuinely the right person based on experience & vision for the broader football club, then by all means.
