Women's Footy AFLW and MFC Women’s team general discussion - Trade Period

Bannan was good to watch, wasn't she?
She’s great! Interesting game because Richmond have some genuine guns - Conti anyways - but our spread of ability is pretty good and basically killed them.

Our list management strategy last year was incred. Traded out a bunch of decent heart and soul but ultimately middling and/or older players to bring in two extra first rounders and landed two straight up guns in Bannan and McNamara. Bannan had an awesome junior highlights package (that contest at half forward in the first quarter where she set up Cunningham was great) but I hadn’t realised how good McNamara was going to be. They played her exclusively on the wing this week so she picked up less of the footy than last week but she’s an beast when she does get inside and her work rate is insane. Makes it to every contest. Basically the exact type of midfielder our men’s side needs. For a side that’s been towards the top every season our elite talent U25 is promising.

Otherwise a decent win but we’ll need to be better if we want to compete with the better sides going forward. We would have to be the worst starters in the comp year in year out. Feel like we always give up the first goal and take a while to get any momentum. And the turnovers...love her but Daisy’s kicking has really dropped off in the last year or two I feel but it’s an issue for us all over. Richmond are woeful and we made them look competitive at times. Don’t know if I’ve ever seen us play four quarters.

Yep late in the second quarter we couldn't get it out of Richmond's forward line and were lucky they didn't score a goal. We had all the play before but kept blowing chances.
Was a worry, but also a sign of how the Tigers are playing atm (and games at Casey always get bogged down an end with the wind, usually). They seem to just want to clog it up and make games scraps to stay in it. Us kicking into the wind played into that too.

If those sides don’t play each other they won’t win a game
I think the league might use the floating fixture to manufacture some competitive games for those sides to have a shot at winning. West Coast are probably in the same boat. No rain yesterday and they lose by 10 goals, rather than 10pts.

Yeah looking at the round 3 fixture it looks like they are trying to even the ladder up a bit. Still can't believe they brought in as many teams as they have. I get they needed a couple more but have added too many. The standard would be very high if not for all the added teams.

10 teams seems about right for this comp.

4 x Vic
2 x SA
2 x WA
1 x NSW
1 x Qld

12 at a stretch maybe, but 14 is stretching the talent far too thin. Watched both Dees games and the talent is getting better, but it would be much more watchable with a couple more guns in each team.

It is improving very quickly, the draft class each year is basically immediately in the near top tier of players in the comp. Really hope we can keep being in top 15 picks over the next few years bc our list is pretty stacked for mature talent which some of the other sides are desperate for

And our older players look to have some time left yet. Paxman, Pearce, Scott are all still contributing reliably. Hopefully Downie is right after her injury. We should be able to contest for a flag in the next couple of years.

Next couple? Surely this year

Hopefully yes, but not sure we can get past North. Adelaide are also up this year, but not sure they have the same spread of guns as the Roos. Freo may be hindered pending the WA border situation; for players who are still part-time it'll be hard being away from home for so long.

so the north fullback kicks in after a behind and the ball goes out with no one touching it , why wasn't that a free for us ?

That rule is in the AFL, if you kick in from the square and it goes out of bound untouched it's a deliberate out of bounds. That rule has been in since the late 90s

Of course it doesn't apply if you run out of the square, or in the old days kicked to yourself first
