I saw a boomer on the train with his mask hanging off his chin for the whole trip.

Dude is who we're doing this for and he does that.

The north Perth shopping plaza ( across the road from where the security guard went to the chemist) are a bunch of boomers who walk though those shops with out a mask all the time and not a single person says anything to them.

Best Premier in the land world!

Mr McGowan joked: “I was in the navy and I live in Rockingham. I’ve seen worse.”

I believe him.

A year or two ago I saw someone with an actual ******* swastika tattoo on his arm at the Baldivis Spud Shed.

People annoy me as a job lot, stupid is as stupid does. There's no no need to categorize them by age or anything else.

So as a suprise to no one really, WHO are finding that COVID was much more widespread in Wuhan than what the Chinese government were letting on in December 2019

Very few I would imagine.

It's easy to say in hindsight it was China's pride that lead to this being that widespread. If they had told the world earlier and locked down it could have been contained, but in all honesty if this were to have happened in the US do you think they would have done anything different?

I'd say most countries would have thought they could handle it in house first rather than seek help and get on top of it.

China were able to do a strict lockdown but couldn’t imagine many countries willing to so what they did through January early on and id imagine the outbreak worldwide would have been way worse.

Well some countries are only now looking at locking their international borders *cough* England *cough* despite how wide spread its been there.

Even that's been met with some resistance from the locals

No doubt China would have wanted to look strong and not announce something like this but I think the US showed us exactly how they'd handle it if they were patient zero.
Until we shut our borders in mid March almost all of our cases were coming from the US or the UK. The US at the time were reporting basically zero cases and denied they had any infections or a problem. The reality is that even 12months later a lot of countries (and people) are in denial about certain aspects of the pandemic including how widespread it is. To think that this would have been picked up better anywhere else is fanciful.

How many doctors would send you in for labs if you present with mild flu like symptoms in December 2019? Let alone government officials to pick the right course of action - which is still being debated with lots of people disagreeing with lockdowns as being effective (despite the evidence).

Agree with most of the above except for "mid March almost all of our cases were coming from the US or the UK"

In Perth at least, you couldn't get tested for it unless you had been overseas, or were close to someone who was. Someone coming from Italy, going to the shops, giving it to me, we honestly couldn't measure that properly given the restricted access to testing etc... So its a bit hard to tell (even though I agree with the base premise that most of our cases initially were likely imported).

I think the only real difference in terms of world view is that more countries wouldn't hard lockdown at all, because they wouldn't have seen the success that those lockdowns bring in terms of reducing the total number of cases/deaths. If USA were patient zero, it would be more likely "well its here, deal with it" as opposed to actively doing lockdowns closing borders, because we gotta save the economy.

That isn't to say that lockdowns are the answer. They clearly help in terms in stopping direct COVID cases/deaths. Whether they are worth the effort is obviously a subjective question.

do people actually think china was honest from the start? WHO covered their arses as well.

China pretty much repeated the same line internationally that they have since the SARS outbreak in 2002.

Anyone expecting honesty from such an authoritarian regime is kidding themselves.

That said, in a country of well over a billion people, it cannot be denied that the response in China has been effective. The draconian measures available to an autocrat work well to prevent transmission on a wide scale.

As for the WHO, it will take a great deal of work now for them to restore reputation after being caught out during the initial stages of this pandemic.

Spooked by Trump's actions to completely deconstruct the USA's monitoring of emerging pandemic threats, they found themselves looking elsewhere in order to gain information and China was forthcoming in getting feet on the ground, particularly across sub-Saharan Africa.
Whilst Trump was questioning the USA's commitment to the WHO and slashing funding to the CDC, there was an outbreak of Ebola going on in a city with over 2 million people. China ended up playing a pivotal role in ring-fencing Goma as over 250,000 were vaccinated by the WHO in less than a month.

That newfound trust however, would be tested just 3 months later when reports started to emerge of a flu-like respiratory outbreak near Wuhan... The hesitation to ask direct questions, criticise the lack of transparency, and take action upon information in opposition to that presented by China rendered the WHO as an entity that became increasingly redundant as the crisis progressed.

It was not until 11/03/2020 that the WHO actually made the declaration of a pandemic. By that stage, there were already 120,000 confirmed cases in over 110 countries, with almost 150 million people under lockdown.

astra zeneca is approved.

so as there is up to a 12 week gap between doses effectively should you wish to have a vaccine you will likely have it by no later than july.

fingers crossed the end is near of this pandemic so the focus can go into ensuring it doesnt happen and that nations will be held responsible for their inadequate actions.

I also hope australia expands their trading partners out of this and focuses more on local manufacturing.
