With Darcy Gardiner looking like he wont be playing, this is my latest thinking on round 1 >

Daniel Rich, Jack Payne, Grant Birchall.
Brandon Starcevich, Harris Andrews, Callum Ah Chee.

Oscar McInerney, Jarrod Berry, Lachie Neale.
Jarryd Lyons, Hugh McCluggage, Zac Bailey.

Charlie Cameron, Eric Hipwood, Cam Rayner.
Linc McCarthy, Joe Daniher, Keidean Coleman.

Dayne Zorko, Ryan Lester, Daniel McStay, Nakia Cockatoo.

I'm expecting the likes of Answerth, Robertson, Robinson to be in the mix for round 1 as well... and as the season goes on Adams, E.Smith, Madden, T.Berry, Prior, B.Coleman, Fullarton to push hard and put real pressure on the incumbents.

IMO our midfield will be deeper this season with more rotating through there and being able to play in there for longer ie. Rayner, McCarthy(IMO his midfield work is underrated), Ah Chee(wing), also Starcevich, Cockatoo to spend a bit of time in the midfield albeit shorter stints.

I love McCarthy when he goes in the middle . Hard at it and his disposal is generally good. Hoping with 2 full years under his belt now he's getting better and coming into his prime.

Imagine if we can get Joe Daniher to play 20+ games this season.... not to mention if Marcus Adams manages to play a significant chunk of the season, injury pone players from other clubs will be screaming from the hilltops and to their managers "get me to the Lions".

He was brilliant in the middle in the scratchy that was at Morningside a couple of weeks ago.

He's just a really good team player . Can mark over his head ,tackling/ locking down skills are strong. Nothing much he doesn't do well.

That's where we'll get the real improvement . McCarthy , Rayner ,Bailey, Ah Chee , I'm not a fan of McStay but we've pumped the games into him and if he's ever going to be an impactful player it will be this year, Starcevich , Berry, Hipwood . All entering their break out windows.

About McStay, from what I have seen this pre-season he is definitely our best 3rd tall forward option.
Ballenden and Fullarton are behind him and need more development to get to his level. And out of the 1st choice forwards, he is the one who is taking his shots and kicking straight at the moment.
I know it’s just pre-season but McStay, Hippy and Joe appears to be working really well together.

Apart from Paddy McCartin, who else falls in to that category, who could be a gun player?

agree with the comment re Daniher if he plays a large chunk of games, not so sure with Adams who has had 2 to 3 operations since arriving and played about 11 AFL games in two years. Cockatoo will be interesting this year if he gets a chunk of games then injury prone players will be screaming to get to the warmer weather and a good coaching/medical/fitness team.

You're right, a fit regular playing seniors Cockatoo would be a better feather in our cap:think: re our rehabilitation reputation than Marcus Adams.

Prelim to 2021:

Outs- Stef Martin, Cam Ellis-Yolmen, Grant Birchall, Mitch Robinson, Daniel McStay, Ryan Lester

Ins- Joe Daniher, Deven Robertson, Marcus Adams, Nakia Cockatoo, Noah Answerth, Ely Smith.

Backs: Answerth - Payne - Adams

Half Backs: Starcevich - Andrews - Rich

Centres: Bailey - McCluggage - Ah Chee

Half Forwards: Zorko - Hipwood - Rayner

Full forwards: Cameron - Daniher - McCarthy

Rucks: McInerney - Lyons - Neale

Interchange: Cockatoo - Robertson - Berry - E Smith

Emergencies: McStay - K.Coleman - Fullarton - Lester - Madden - Robinson.
Injured: Gardiner

- Adams: as shown in the WAFL prior to being drafted can play forward as well. Swing man who can provide key backs with a rest. As strong as an Ox, something Fagan values highly.

- Robertson: Lions beaten badly in centre clearances against the cats. Robertson a clearance specialist who will only get better.

- E. Smith: training the house down by all reports. Improved endurance. Deserve your chance.

McCarthy has been very impressive in the middle in scratch matches. I think he and Zorks could play a half forward and midfield role between them this year. Cam Rayner will also see more midfield time.
I would like to see Hippy on the wing leaving McStay and Joey as our tall marking options. Hippy is agile and has a tank but is let down by his unreliability as a strong mark. He is too easily pushed aside by aggressive defenders.
Payne in for Gardiner seems inevitable but Adams does look fit and determined . Would be happy either way.
Madden has developed nicely. Bit like Hanley in his day. He will debut this year. Robertson should be first reserve in the midfield and Ely Smith is pushing hard as well.
All in all we will be exciting to watch and I believe will give it a good shake this year.

thought I would have a crack at round 1 team. Obviously have a better idea after upcoming practice games.
Believe this will change throughout the year, and probably Lester out for Gardiner upon his return. Gardiner will give away less penalties marking the 3rd tall. Maybe Lester can take Birchall role?

Birchall, Payne, Lester
Starc, Harris, Rich

Bailey, Oscar, McClug
Neal, Lyons, Rayner

McCarthy, Hippy, McStay
Cameron, Daniher, Coleman

Int: J.Berry, Zorks, Ah Chee, Robbo

Hopefully a few young guys from the pool of, Robertson, Ely Smith, Fullarton, Berry, Prior, B.Smith, Ballenden, Joyce, Madden get a chance throughout the season and in the practice games.

I don’t disagree that Hippy could be one hell of a wingman but I think Fages is going with 3 tall forwards to try and stretch other teams defences. I thought Hippy’s marking got a lot more reliable at the end of the season. On the lead he is basically uncatchable and could be invaluable if the ball is coming quickly out the centre. With Joe and McStay I would imagine that Hippy plays a high CHF this season.

Hipwood was also out on the wing, providing that relief mark for defense on many occasions last year. The difference now will be he can mark and wheel around knowing Daniher will be available as a deep forward target rather than himself needing to run back.

McStay needs to stick those marks too. He's going to get the weakest link, 3rd defender potentially. McStay's going to play a huge role and need to take full toll of Daniher/Hipwood taking the premier defenders away.

I disagree that Hippy could be a wingman. Wingman today are additional on-ballers, not rangy taller types. Eric has never played in stoppages!

Clugg and Robinson are not what I would have considered traditional wingers. Regardless, the Hippy comparison is dumb. When he's got up the ground he's been at his most impressive and has been able to the mark we need and very impressively. He's just using his athleticism as a conduit. Doesn't mean he's a wingman. Was Wayne Carey a wingman when he was leading up the ground?

McStay might get the 4th best defender now as Charlie/Daniher/Hippy be looked at as the worry.
Charlie often gets a tall defender playing on him like Grimes.. If they switch that to McStay they Charlie open more.
Look at our back 6 how they line up against our forward 6.. Andrews to Daniher.. Payne to Hippy.
Darcy, AhChee, Starc, Rich, Birchall to hold McStay, Charlie, McCarthy, Zorko and Rayner.
I think we be worried.

Picking a 22 for round 1 exclusively out of the 25 in the squad for tomorrow's practice match (which you shouldn't assume will be how it will end up and I think Robbo will be in the team, but its Friday afternoon and I'm bored).

B: Starcevich Andrews Lester

HB: Birchall Payne Rich

C: McCluggage Berry Bailey

HF: Zorko Hipwood Rayner

FF: Cameron Daniher McStay

F: McInerney Neale Lyons

I: Ah Chee McCarthy Coleman E Smith

Round one I think I would take out Coleman and put in Robbo, but spots are very very tight. It will be very interesting to see what the back 7 look like once Dizzy is fit - I'd probably drop Lester but geez that is harsh.

A selection quandry like this is a very good problem to have.

Most of us will have about the same 18 players at this stage in the best 22
This is what i like before the two trial games start

FB: Madden - Payne - Birchall
HB: Rich - Andrews - Starcevich
..C: McCluggage - Neale - Bailey
HF: Cameron - Hipwood - Mcstay
FF: Zorko - Daniher (2nd R) - K Coleman

..F: McInerney - Lyons - Rayner

I/C: J Berry (M/F), McCarthy (M/F), Lester (D/U), AhChee (D/M)

Madden has to play well in both trials to keep spot as he is unproven at AFL level
If i took him out i would move AhChee to defense and Robbo (M/F) on to the bench assuming he is fit enough
Reading between the lines with that last Fagan interview Cockatoo may be ready by R1 but will he play him

Hey guys, fantasy question here.

Just wondering if the Lions have any draftees from either 2020, or the last couple years who are doing well in the intra-club games/scratch match from this week. Would you expect them to be best 22?

Thanks in advance.
