Thinking Caesar was the emperor of Rome is an easy enough mistake to make given he was the dictator of the Roman Republic for a period and in those days I don't think there was much of a practical difference between an emperor and a dictator. Also the title "Caesar" was subsequently used for Roman emperors so there can be a bit of confusion there.

But officially, no, he was never the emperor of Rome. The Roman Empire began in 27BC which is 17 years after Caesar was assassinated. The first emperor was Octavian (later Augustus).

Even if one is a bit sketchy on the specifics, a quick Google confirms everything easily enough.
