Did Grundy take it 3 or 4 times out of the middle and put it on his boot? Looking good.
Some nice work in close by T Brown too

What was the result of the 4 kicks?

Is it better he does it but turns it over and opposition launch an attack or he learns to hit to advantage setting a team mate free into space who then delivers inside 50?

Genuine question as I haven't watched the footage.

- Pendles was off the last half.
- Grundy sat out the last quarter.
- IMO Noble was probably the BOG for us.
- Henry looks likely for the early rounds.
- Ruscoe finished with two, which is a good sign. May put his hand up for a spot early too.
- Elliot finished with three, which was great to see.
- Usual suspects did ok.
- Didn't bring much intensity early, so Cats got a jump on us.
- Cameron sat off second half for them, think Dangerfield sat off too.
- Checkers was icing shin after game, hopefully no injury. Didn't look like any other injuries.

How did we look to move the ball? Similar to last year or quicker and more direct?

Last year imo we often looked to lack leg speed across the field, is it still an issue?

Delivery inside 50 long bombs or dropping the eyes and kicking to advantage?

Did the structure inside 50 look sound or more of 2020?

Not fussed if players skills looked rusty ie miss kicks, dropped marks etc, pretty typical of this time of year.

Think the result as well (outside the first quarter) would please the coaches.

On the subject of Sier, what pleased me about him today was that he was noticeably more physical at stoppages. He didn’t have a fabulous game by any means, but he was willing to get in and take a hit/get his hands dirty, which is frankly more than he’s done at any point in his career in that respect up to this point. I’m used to seeing him skirting packs and not using his size, so it was refreshing to see him more involved from that perspective.
That's great to hear. Such awesome power. But so far he's been like a hummer with Nanna at the wheel

Have to agree with all you said there.

Still... I won’t be surprised at all if Cal Brown is named for Round 1.

My starting forward 6 for Round 1 would be Checkers, Cox, Elliott, Henry, Thomas and one of DeGoey or Sidebottom with those two rotating into the middle.

If Kelly is fit, then JT or Henry to start on the bench and I’d consider Ruscoe on the bench as well.

Think for the guys on the fringe the main thing today decided is who will get a chance to press for a round 1 Postie by playing in the Richmond practice game. Ideal if we have some competition for last few spots.

Henry impressed today and you would think he gets a game next week. Sier, the Browns, Thomas, Greenwood etc will be in the mix but not all will get a gig against Richmond. To get the round 1 spots left Henry and the others have to impress against the Tigers

If the Browns and those others you mention are destined to all make the final cut for the first game, it's going to be a long season for supporters.

The good news is, with about 11 first year players on the books this year, the odds are improved that one or two of them might be able to make an immediate impact.

In recent years we haven’t had enough young players coming through on the list. We definitely overshot this year so hopefully our injury list doesn’t go too deep. Maybe in coming years we will get the balance right.
It's a matter of paying attention to core business first and foremost in my opinion. The players haven't had the facilities or support staff to produce their best. Our player development people have failed repeatedly and that abortion of a training surface caused more injuries than we could cope with and win a flag.

Time to spend the money we need to to give the young men the tools and attributes they need to conquer all. The club has been penny pinching in all the wrong areas. I find myself hoping a new administration can renew the focus of the club.

Full match summary:
Brody Mihocek provided a marking presence up the ground, kicking an early goal after the Cats got off to a fast start. Geelong's Mark Blicavs was Mihocek's opponent for most of the afternoon.

Tyler and Callum Brown were dynamic as a midfield duo throughout the game. Up against the star studded Geelong midfield, it was impressive to the Brown brothers holding their own with some of the competition's best.

With opportunities in the midfield for 2021, Brayden Sier looks to be a lock for round one. A competitive beast, Sier’s attack on the ball is a real stand-out as he looks to improve on a injury interrupted 2020.

QT: Geelong 4.1.25 Collingwood 1.1.7

It was an inspired second quarter from Collingwood, led by captain Scott Pendlebury. His presence around stoppages under the brilliance of Brodie Grundy helped us swing momentum of the match.

There was a noticeable increase in pressure from the Pies, controlling field position for a large portion of the quarter and successfully converting in front of goal.

Grundy was dominant all day, demonstrating his ability to compete for the ball on the ground and not just in the air. His field kicking a real highlight, hitting targets on the run in midfielder-like fashion.

Will Hoskin-Elliott was dangerous, booting two of his three goals in the quarter and continues to provide a presence up forward alongside a young forward line.

HT: Geelong 5.2.32 Collingwood 4.3.27
Mason Cox, Trent Bianco, Levi Greenwood and Nathan Murphy joined the team for the second half.

Trent Bianco was impressive in the game time he got during the second half. He took a strong overhead mark under pressure and utilised his acceleration around the contest.

One of the biggest take-aways from the match was the ability of draftee Oliver Henry. After his first touch was a one-handed mark on the wing, Henry didn’t slow down. When he took a mark 20 metres out on a slight angle running back with the flight, Geelong defender (and older brother Jack), had to watch while the ball sailed through the big sticks.

The Pies hit the front for the first time of the game thanks to Jamie Elliott’s second goal of the game. Finishing with three for the match, Elliott’s forward craft combined with his ability to run through the midfield will be an asset for Collingwood in 2021.

3QT: Geelong 8.6.54 Collingwood 7.5.47
Trey Ruscoe elevated his game in the final quarter. Slotting two goals in the term, his smarts around forward stoppages and ability to find space where there isn’t much was particularly impressive.

John Noble looks to be in fine form leading into this season. His run off half-back created a lot of opportunities going forward. There were several passages of play where Noble’s penetrating kicks were a real issue for the Cats.

With two minutes on the clock Jamie Elliot’s third goal provided hope for the Pies, while Mason Cox fired another soon after to trail by 1-point.

The Cats were able to hold on at their home deck. The Magpies now look towards Richmond in the Community Series at Marvel Stadium on 5 March.

A full match replay will be available as soon as possible.

FT: Geelong 11.8.74 Collingwood 11.6.72

Goals: Elliott 3, Ruscoe 2, Hoskin-Elliott 2, Cox, T Brown, Mihocek, Henry
Best:
Grundy, Elliott, Moore, Sier, Pendlebury

I think Grundy pushing forward from the contest with the ball is to the team's advantage relative to relying upon his tapwork to our advantage.

Grundy streamed out of the middle and hit Billy on the chest (who goaled) in the 3Q at least.

Good to see we're playing games at 11am, which is the same time we will be playing our proper AFL games so it's the perfect practice.
Little sarcasm there? Haha. They had little choice, as the ground was being used by the cats aflw in the evening.

Tyler and Cal were dynamic! Wow! I confess to missing large chunks of the game due to un-foreseen circumstances, but on what I saw of it, I would use a less effusive word than 'dynamic' to describe their contribution. 'Serviceable' is a modest but more accurate description of their performances. There again, with the commentators intent on not exposing their lack of knowledge of the players' names by talking absolutely crap for the vast majority of the game, I took quite a while, with interruptions, to put names to jumpers. And why the dark jumpers? When I first tuned in late, I thought I was watching Carlton play Geelong.

You’ve moved the conversation way too far off topic there!

Couldn’t be bothered with that.

We have a new list which will help now and in the future. Hopefully one or two of these new players can make an immediate impact alongside a very good top finals quality best 22, who still have upside if they all click and stay fit.

We know it can be done... we were a kick away in 2018 with much the same list.

Yeah I think the way he played last year was an overreaction to the way Mummy played him in the final of 2019. He stopped trying to rove his own taps. Him being a brute force inside mid after the ruck contest is his biggest strength.

Like I say you are entitled to your opinion, I believe it has bearing with the conversation but to move on.

Life and football isn't that simple we can only face the season with good heart and determination to improve.

A whole lot negative stuff not really relevant to the post. Do I smell an agenda?

We couldn't of used the ground the day before or the day after?

It just seems mind-blowingly stupid to me having the team train and play from 9am-11am when you can count on 1 hand the amount of AFL games we have starting before 2pm... If you want players to get good sleeping habits and get used to training in the same conditions they play, why don't we do night time training?
