Review Scratch match analysis of North V Saints

Good solid football is passed off as "all time" greatness these days.

Glenn Freeborn kicks 3 goals in a GF to swing the ascendency of a match and no one barely remembers it.

Dustin Martin does it and it's one of the greatest grand final performances of all time!

Modern players are waaaaay overhyped.
its funny you say that.
my best 3 players ever all played in the 90s.
Carey Lockett and Ablett snr.
very subjective i realise.
But id struggle to find someone in the last 10 years i rate close to those 3.

Yeah, I've been around long enough to see teams where Grimes, Edwards & Prestia wouldn't get a game.

There's no way the 12-22 players in the Richmond team would have gotten games in the best sides I have seen.

Lol Grimes would be a walk up start in any side in any era. I think the problem might be that you have been around too long.

We have to find a forward/ruck. We can't be sending Larky in there.

Xerri/Comben/Campbell or Skinner do we have any other options on the list? Someone in the Pedersen mould would be good. Walker isn't mobile enough I don't think.
The interesting thing was, when Larkey went in they started winning hit outs. Doesn't say much for Tom Campbell. I'd like to know whats going on with Xerri.

Agree with everything except Richmond have stars on every line, mate.

Every line.

Grimes, Houli, Edwards, Martin, Prestia, Lynch and Riewoldt = stars on every line. They also have pace and discipline on every line.

The onus is on us to build a list that can match that, we are on the way, but missing 7-8 important pieces.

Nah. Take Martin out of that side they aren’t winning s**t. He’s that good

I think Campbell lost 90-95% of hitouts vs Ryder.
It really wasn't a good showing and gave me 0 confidence he would be ok as a 2nd ruckman/forward on field behind goldy.

Just watched the game today.

Like most the score itself is not hugely concerning as we were so many down and a new coach, game plan etc.

But in saying that it wasn't a great watch and we better improve pretty quickly or we will be smashed in season proper - back and fwd line a complete mess.

Fingers crossed.

Some comments about Hayden being good in the midfield.

And therein lies our problem. A plodder can look good in the midfield but at the end of the day he is a plodder.

God help us if he gets regular midfield time.

You dropped the ball here mate.

He was the best clearance player on the field in a side that was dominated by the opposition rucks.

He had 3 more clearances than the highest ranked StKilda midfielder (Hunter Clark 4).

Of course a little clarity in regard to the garbage that is modern football.

Richmond have been 17th, 18th, 17th & 13th for clearances since 2017.

Rolling maul >>>>>>>>>> clearances.

Sad, but true.

Isn't that a testament to how excellent their backline has been then?

They are very disciplined defenders and that's even without pretty boy Rance.

Defensive clearance structures/pressure and speed around the clearances on top of that for Richmond.

So like us and Carey?

Our record was alright without him, but of course it would impact.

If John Longmire's knees held up then I reckon our 90's sides would have still won flags without Duck. He was head & shoulders above Wayne in their early years.

Coaches have ruined the game.
The afl’s constant rule changes and their misinterpretation by overtaxed umpires every year has contributed to a degradation in quality. Teams just adapt after the rules changes.

I have to side with the AFL here.

The AFL predominately attempt to clean up the mess created by the coaches.

Eade started the flood, Roos sat on the ball, West Coast brought in athleticism, Clarkson played keepings off, and now Richmond have the rolling maul.

Tactics have been the main culprit.

The AFL's OH&S stance has been the other factor, and it's predominately about Disneyfication marketing that has accompanied the big bucks media deals which have emerged.

How did our PF go without Duck and McKernan injured a early against Saints?

Hammered. I expected to win that game even Schwass and Arch down.

You underestimate Ducks influence.

Longmire matured quicker but limited ability compared to Duck. One trick pony.

we wouldn't have won a flag without him. Ridiculous to suggest otherwise.

He was also a few years older no?

1990-1995, horse was immense.

There were countless games in 1995 just before his knee, that Horse stepped up in Ducks absence and we got the chocolates. Tony Shaws 300th from memory.
