Round 1 bolters: Every AFL club’s surprise scratch match standout
GOLD COAST SUNS
Maybe this is the year it finally all clicks for Will Brodie.
After being drafted with Pick 9 in 2016, Brodie has managed just 20 games in the past four seasons, including only one in 2020. It led to the midfielder exploring his trade options, but when few clubs showed interest, Brodie focused on producing the best pre-season he could — and it’s paying dividends.
After running a huge 30-second personal best in his 2km time trial last December, Brodie on Saturday showed he has all the makings to be in the Suns’ on-ball brigade come Round 1.
He put in a good audition for a spot in the best 22, racking up ample disposals and making good decisions, showing strength in the contest when attending centre bounces and also kicking a goal in the second term.
Elsewhere, fellow first-round draftee Sam Flanders, who played just five games in his debut season in 2020, should also be in the Round 1 mix after showing ample energy and applying terrific defensive pressure in the forward line.

Can't believe some people are taking preseason results seriously. The score has and always mean jack sh*t.
Scores are a minuscule part of the equation.

seeing some form of game plan, a bit of forward cohesion and some new things from our youngsters is important though.

it’s not like we’re a Richmond or Geelong that can just turn it on at will in round 1.

Scrappy match as I expected. No reason to melt yet. Ballard and Graham were more than rusty. Some experimenting going on. Burgess was suprisingly good against back up ruckmen. Lemmens will be handy against Cameron type of forwards. Markov is a good acquisition.

Highlight was Cochrane abusing 'clown' umpire #3 after Markov executed a great tackle.

Looking forward for better performance on Mon.

We always love The Coch.

No exceptions.

haha. Cochrane been hilarious.
Pretty spot on with most of his calls too I think.

Got to say - this game is very very open St Kilda vs Carlton, end to end.
Suiting the fast dynamic players.

Not sure our Miller / Greenwood / Swallow / Rowell lineup suits this new style.

May just well be pre season - think the new laws have a fair bit to do with it though..

Our gut running half forward types are gonna love this type of footy.

Ben Ainsworth to explode for sure.

Weller, Anderson, Rankine, Ainsworth all going to love this style of footy if that's how it gets played, all fast movers who are constantly on the go
