Can be done if they pick the right location. Not sure about the groundsman, but he can always be sacked and replaced by someone more pleasant.
They already did that before the start of last season (sack the Australian Football hating former groundsman) - that's why the GABBA playing surface was much better last season.

Daily Telegraph J. Halloran 23.3.19

J. Halloran, sports' journalist, self-described NRL fan, long time Sydney resident, & mother of jnrs in Club Auskick & Club RL in Sydney, wrote

"In the race [in Sydney, between AF & RL] to win over hearts & minds of indifferent mums & dads, it is a no contest when it comes to the national program of Auskick...".

"...there is a real disconnect between the NRL & the grassroots. Meanwhile the AFL's Auskick participation in NSW has risen by 6.2% over the past 12 months, with rugby league's heartland areas Parramatta, Fairfield, Liverpool, Bankstown, Manly, Illawarra, Newcastle & the wider Hunter recording the biggest spikes [for Auskick]".

"From my experience as a mum, it is clear Auskick is light years ahead & rugby league is being left behind..."

"Where we live, the AFL via Auskick has well & truly won the trust of many parents. It's not Penrith, but it was once a rugby league first 'burb".

The proposed 50k stadium was to be in Albion, but the IOC wants them to use Metricon for the Aths and Gabba for ceremonies. Games is now all about sustainability and keeping costs down for host cities. Unlikely to be a new major stadium.

Even the use of Metricon for a major chunk of the games can only be good news for the Suns long term.

The Brisbane-based AIC private schools have, for the first time, introduced in 2019 AF, as a full season, all years, inter school competition. It's a pity it only took about 120 years.

The competing schools are Iona Wynnum, Villanova Coorparoo, St Laurence's Sth Brisbane, Marist Ashgrove, St Edmunds Woodend, St Patricks Shorncliffe, Padua Kedron.

AF has been growing strongly in the AIC since 2019.
Villanova school website in 2021 says

"In this short time, AFL has become very popular & well received throughout the Villanova community".

The Villanova web site says that they actually commenced AFL in 2017 with year 5 and 6. That must have had reasonable success for a new sport for that school. Remember we are in non heartland for our game and like most schools in Australia most sports are offered.
Glad you mentioned the 120 year bit -Just shows you -Never ever give up your goals whatever they maybe. Just think we were the first up there by a long way.

I went to Villanova for a couple of years in the mid-1980s. There were quite a few kids who wanted to play Australian football even then, but there was a rugby league big wig in charge of sport who point blank refused to let anybody even think about it. Most of the kids interested in footy ended up playing for South Brisbane/ Yeronga. Glad to see it's changed. Was a bit of a grubby school back then...

The Front Office Podcast A. Tallarico & R. Haidar 10.6.20

Haidar teaches Media Studies, & also specialises in NRL & its 16 Clubs' finances, & RL strategic issues. He, also, until early June 2020, hosted anonymously his excellent RL Podcast, called only "The NRL Economist".

They had a long interview with R. Masters. Haidar said many in the NRL community (not disputed by A. Tallarico, who is a Director of the NSWRL Cup [NRL Reserves] Newtown Jets) were concerned that the NRL decided on a Rights' extension with Foxtel, very early in the covid crisis.

Haidar asked Masters whether the NRL should have renegotiated, in May 2020, a 5 year extension with Foxtel to 2027, considering the NRL was financially very stressed at that time, due to the covid shutdown/NRL loss of crucial revenues.
The broadcasters knew the NRL was cash strapped, & that the NRL would lose any legal challenge (Force Majeure) to any unilateral voiding of the existing contracts, which expired in 2022

Masters' reply was, paraphrasing, that the NRL should not have renegotiated a Rights' extension with Foxtel in May 2020, the NRL should "have held off"; & that Nine got a "massive discount", Foxtel "needs the NRL" & the NRL "is taking less money".
34 minutes 20 seconds - 37 mins. 50 secs.

Masters also said that NRL Brisbane Broncos, Melbourne Storm, etc. have bigger social media registrations than the top AFL clubs.
The NRL & Sydney Clubs etc. should "capitalise" on this Brand strength, particularly with their youngest fans, to combat the growth of the AFL- he is disappointed the NRL haven't pushed the power of their Brand.
44 mins 20 secs -46 mins

SMH R. Masters 2.3.21

Masters wrote

"The AFL gained an extension with both its broadcasters Seven & Foxtel delivering $946m over 2023-24, or an average $473m per year".
( A new, annual record for any Aust. sport. Pre covid, AFL was $418m pa. AFAIK, no fully professional sport anywhere in the world, in any sport, since May 2020/post covid, has received an increase in its Rights' $- only discounts).

"Considering the NRL was scheduled to receive approx. $340m in 2021, now reduced by at least $27.5m as a result of Nine's discount (ie not including Foxtel's discounts forced on the NRL for 2020-2027). The gap with the AFL seems likely to grow (Emphases, & words in brackets, mine)".

The AFL's greatly increased revenue streams (& improved position, cf the NRL) will, obviously, assist it in increasing market share in NSW, AC, & Qld.- for the AFL in particular, & GR AF in general.

SEN Melb. G. Whateley program 3.3.21

J. Halloran, a The Australian sports' journalist, & winner of the prestigious Walkley Award for Journalism, is creating a permanent podcast series, "The Breakdown", concentrating on business & strategic issues facing all sports.
The first 6 podcasts will be a 6-part series titled "The Fall of RU in Australia".

She said to Whateley (I sometimes paraphrase here):-

. "the game is in crisis now".

. "Rugby Clubs are dying, in the suburbs & the bush".

. to the question she asked of a GR RU coach "At the GR, how would you describe it?", the coach relied "It's catastrophic at the moment".

. [re the situation of RU] Halloran said "It's incredibly catastrophic, incredibly sad".

. D. Campese has been doing jnr RU clinics for 12 years, & always asks the kids if they can name a current Wallaby. D. Campese told her most cannot now.

. RA was $20m in debt in 2020, & was perilously close to becoming, for the elite 2nd tier, an amateur comp. in 2021.
(2 minutes - 5 mins. 15 seconds)

. "The advance of AFL in private schools up here in Sydney & Qld. is a real issue for RU & RL, this issue will be covered in episodes 5 & 6".
(9 mins. 30 secs.- 10 mins.14 secs.)

. "There are AFL goal posts at nearly every private school, which were once predominantly RU. Anecdotally, I know [in Sydney, where she lives] some parents are first asking [before enrolling their child] prospective private schools 'Do you have AFL?' ".
(11 mins.40 secs- 13 mins.10 secs)

. Some parents want their kids to play RU, but there is no RU club nearby- because many RU clubs have ceased to exist.

. "the core constituency of RU now are the rusted-on fans of people who grew up with RU in the 80's, 90's, & 2000's ".

. only the creation of "... an independent RU Commission can reverse the abject neglect of the grassroots".
(14 mins. - 14 mins. 56 secs.)

Momentum is building (not just in NSW, with the Pre-Commitment of Maximum Losses' Card) to eradicate the scourge of vile poker machines in Australia- not only to save pokie addicts, but to attack criminals & tax cheats laundering moneys through poker machines.

Whilst some AFL & GR AF clubs have them, eradication, or at least significant reductions of pokie useage, would most severely effect some NRL clubs & GR RL clubs in NSW, Qld. (& ACT- NRL Raiders)- who are FAR more reliant.

Brisbane Times F. Caldwell 19.2.19

"Queenslanders lose record $2.4b to poker machines" in 12 months.

Calls for "...pokies to be phased out...".

The Age N. Towell 26.2.21

Towell said

"Losses on Victorian poker machines have risen...with gamblers blowing $239m in January.
One of the Sate's leading gambling experts says money laundering by criminals is likely to be at least partly behind the increased losses...

Campaigners are lobbying the State govt. to extend its Royal Commission into Crown Casino & [also into] other pubs & clubs across the State...

...The Alliance For Gambling Reform says the Vic. Royal Commission should also look whether pubs & clubs across Melb. & the State were being exploited by criminals & tax cheats seeking to launder their tainted money".

newdaily. com A. Tate 15.4.20

"...ACT Chief Minister A. Barr has offered community clubs in Canberra $15k to hand back poker machine licenses [for each machine]".

Reverend T. Costello said, re poker machine addicts & losses

"The NRL...are the worst of the worse...The truth is that pokies have been our blind spot...The rest of the world looks at us and says $13b a year lost, 20% of the world's pokies [are in Australia]. How could they? (Emphases, & words in brackets, mine)".

Some further information (& speculation) on the Qld. govt.'s "well-hyped/big Press Conference" on 2.3.21 that it will soon provide $8m for GR AF facilities in Qld.- & which areas are likely to be the main benificiaries.
The exact future amounts are unclear, re Qld. govt. ongoing contributions for GR AF infrastructure.

Fox Sports G. Clarke 24.2.21

Brisbane 2 is a no- brainer, & likely to enter in the near future (although many MSM NRL experts, Nine & Foxtel etc. want Brisbane 2, they also prefer 1 less Sydney Club concurrently with B entering, so the NRL remains at 16 teams. They argue there is a current lack of depth & poor skills in the NRL, which would become worse in a 17 team comp.= lower crowds, ratings, & MSM interest in the NRL).

N. Livermore, joint head of the Brisbane Jets Western Corridor (Ipswich) joint Bid, said

"We don't want to rely on people gambling [poker machines] to backup our Clubs. I think it can be quite a depressing form of entertainment. I think we want to move beyond that".

This is a very rare public admission from an aspiring NRL (which is hugely reliant on pokie funding) official re the incontrovertible vile nature of poker machines.

10% of the world's pokies are in NSW (& lower socio-economic areas are targetted, & far overrepresented); & the $200b+ (converted to today's $) lost by punters since 1956, has caused massive harm to addicts & other punters, their marriages, their families, & the general community.

Sniffing the wind?

I should add to the above that while NSW does have 10% of the world's pokies, most gaming machines aren't pokies. There are only 1 million poker machines in the world, out of 7 million gaming machines.

Moral when you need to be. Worried about pokies but head injuries which are part of afl ignored

Eh? Haven’t heard of any stories of Giants or Swans fans for that matter racially abusing anyone. Any links?

Wanderers on the other hand seem to have a homophobia complex as well as their wannabe hooligans nature.

You sound like Nathan Buckley sweeping stuff under the rug. The sport clearly has a problem.

So you have nothing backing up your comment regarding Giants fans, hell I’ll expand it, Sydney AFL club fans.

Besides Pip you really want to play the racist card as a football fan? Really?

A quick google and......
