What most of those clubs have been able to do is then have a sustained run in the top part of the ladder and making Gfs, rather than just making up the numbers in the top 8
Exactly. While it has taken 5-7 years to make finals, generally those clubs have had extended periods around the mark, the exception being Melbourne
Of course I didn't count the teams that are yet to make finals from a spoon like Essendon, Gold Coast and Carlton so you also need to have a well run club to meet this mark.
It also seems clear that you want to avoid an extended period in the bottom 4. The longer you are in that zone, the less likely you are to succeed. West Coast and Richmond both had relatively short stays in the bottom group and are the only recent spoon-to-premiership winners. So we need to be out of the bottom 4 by 2022-2023
