What most of those clubs have been able to do is then have a sustained run in the top part of the ladder and making Gfs, rather than just making up the numbers in the top 8

Exactly. While it has taken 5-7 years to make finals, generally those clubs have had extended periods around the mark, the exception being Melbourne

Of course I didn't count the teams that are yet to make finals from a spoon like Essendon, Gold Coast and Carlton so you also need to have a well run club to meet this mark.

It also seems clear that you want to avoid an extended period in the bottom 4. The longer you are in that zone, the less likely you are to succeed. West Coast and Richmond both had relatively short stays in the bottom group and are the only recent spoon-to-premiership winners. So we need to be out of the bottom 4 by 2022-2023

Come on though. By this stage you would at least expect to be able to discern some semblance of a game plan.

Sure the talent isn't there. They fcuk up a lot, which is to be expected. But you would expect them to fcuk up in some kind of organised manner.

Walsh and Pyke you could see their game plans almost immediately. Even Sando, who had a very untalented list with Petrenkos and Kerridges and the like, you could still see his swarm it and put it on the boot to dangerous positions plan.

We just look unorganised and disinterested.
We look outdated and not up with the rule changes more than anything.
Forget zones and guarding space. Completely irrelevant now. Play on your man otherwise the umpires will be telling you to stand all ******* day.

We still haven't adapted to the 666 rule.

Imagine if we could have Hamill running in off the back of the square.

All we did on the weekend was structure up for a game that doesn’t exist anymore. Until we can quickly adapt, a fair while, we should go go balls to the wall man on man.

If the goal is to get belted every week by 10-20 goals, sure, man on man could be the play.

I don't think you'll find a more outdated and "structure for a game that doesn't exist anymore" then that one.

666 is barely a factor in these games. It only occurs for a short period at centre bounces, and reverts to normal pretty quickly.

We structured and zoned last week and an 18th team can’t do that.
The new man on mark rule does not outdate man on man at all.
It encourages it and endeavours to break up defensive webs.
The fact that we guarded space and tried to block corridor left us open down the wings which they glided down.
Coaches need to get up with the rule changes and put less of a choker chain on the players.

It's gotta be a hybrid of both.

You can't go man on man full on, we'll get cut up. It can't be the traditional zone either, not against sides that kick as well as Port do. We just gave them too much space.

That short period is often enough for us to get scored against though.

Not that often. Port scored 17 goals in 120 minutes of football - an average of 7 minutes per goal. 666 is only effective for the first 20-30 seconds after each centre bounce. Port did get a couple of goals from fast breaks, where 666 was a relevant factor, but most of their goals came from general play long after the rule had ceased to have any effect. This was completely typical.

If you can’t go man on then you are saying every opposition player is faster and better.
Man on man creates disposal error , htb and quick turnovers more than something on your gps saying you hit the right spots.

Man on man defence went out in the 90s

And they got torched.
Well, then you agree.
When not with the ball you gotta immediately apply pressure on your opponent. When you get the ball back you need at least half a dozen chains of clean ball for a scoring opportunity.

Being able to apply pressure doesn't mean you need to play man on man.

Um yes, yes it most certainly does.
I'll tell Damian Hardwick shall I ?? He best change his gameplan.

The team that flogged us on the weekend didn't play man on man either.

Because they were clean skilled Shorty and chewed us up with overlap.
Hardwick had his plan. He sure has a new one now.
Generally it’s making oppo cough up forward of centre through intense pressur.

The good sides don't play the style you suggest we should.

So it then becomes, do we play the way the good sides do, or do we try to play our own way which is pretty much outdated.

We aren’t a good side yet, gel or anything. The good sides have flipped your surmise completely. They are more one on one without the ball then transition the keeps off triangle movement and ball flow.

They just aren't.

Richmond, Port, West Coast and Geelong zone off in defence better than the rest.
