I'm guessing many schools are worried that if given the option to play Australian football, they'd choose that over rugby and then they may not be able to field a team. They've only got so many boys, and you can't really play both.

It is funny how important schools over east can take their sport - over here the PSA schools take it pretty seriously, but by then players would have had long club careers. Other schools (i.e the vast majority) don't play on weekends, and players would simply play for their club as well.
Nudgee has over 30 rugby sides think they would be right

For years Rugby was banned in public schools in Vic. These things happen every where I guess
really? I seem to recall rugby in my Vic aps school going back to foundation. granted it was considered a sport for thicko toffs, but it was never banned

Not really some schools have academies with the help of the VRU and Rebels and that’s it. Otherwise you aren’t allowed to play it

Yeah as RedV3x implied, you might be confusing "not available" with "not allowed to play". More a case of there just not being sufficient demand for rugby than institutions actively resisting the code like the Qld GPS appear to be doing with football

Plenty of parts of Melbourne filled with islander kids that you could get rugby going. It was banned for PE as it was considered to dangerous, it is only allowed now to be played in PE or at school if you have a specialist rugby coach

Which it most certainly is. You could not have kids playing as forwards without any qualified instruction (particularly scrums but also rucks) and supervision. It actually make sense if they were allowed to play league but not union

Again, it has no relationship to the QLD GPS locking out Australian football

I very much doubt that the VRU has the finances to fund the development officers/coaches to allow rugby to be played in these schools whilst I would almost be certain the AFLQ is offering this in the Qld APS.

What are you on about champ? There are rugby programs at 3 government high schools in the state it’s hardly like they are spending big money

The VRU clearly wouldn't have the resources that AFLQ does and that would limit the number of RU programs in government schools.

Yeah and drop the "champ" bit.
The point is until recently they weren’t even able to do that. Also it wasn’t the VRU that brought about the change it was some kiwi high school teacher. There was an article about it in the age a year or so back. He saw how rugby was used in NZ to help keep kids in school and he got permission to trail a rugby program and it’s now supported by the education department as now the islander kids have a higher high school completion rate now as you have to keep your attendance and grades up to participate

Can someone please explain in plain english what that ch10 video explains? The sound doesn't work on Twitter links for some reason.
Try tapping the video and checking if it's been muted in the bottom right corner. The video explains that the GPS in Brisbane is preventing its constituent schools from offering Australian Rules as a sport, so students have to play at external clubs. Also explains that the AIC schools play Australian rules, and that Harris Andrews and Charlie Cameron came from that comp.

I don't think you your in a strong position to flinging the "What are you on about champ?" around.

You made a strange comment about rugby not being allowed in Victorian public schools as a "whataboutery" in response to the AF lockout in Brisbane GPS....you've subsequently demonstrated it was a silly comment.

It's OK to admit you were wrong

Nothing you'd said indicates any analogy to the Qld GPS situation or that there has been a deliberate campaign in Vic government schools to exclude RU to protect football. The GPS in Qld are clearly acting to protect the interests of RU like they have since the 1880s. when they narrowly adopted RU over football. It's not just confined to our game, they haven't and don't allow any RL even though there would be significant interest amongst many students.

I was a student at a Qld gps school from 01-05.

I played AFL externally at state level.

in 2004? a sports teacher organised a ‘AFL training session’ as both his sons also at the school played with one of them also at state level.

we had >50 kids turn up to the first session which was run at 7am one school morning on an oval ~1km off school campus

It was a one off session - school couldn’t have AFL being successful!

At that stage we had ~4 kids playing in state teams across the school.

2 guys who took up AFL as 16-17 year olds actually went on to play AFL (<50 games total)

in my age state team there were at least 5-6 who were at gps schools.

The appetite from the students was always there!

Fast forward 15 years. No progression!

We don’t even know if the GPS have deliberately blocked it, it’s a minority sport there. They likely don’t have the numbers for them to field football programs and when they compare the GPS to the AIC they don’t mention the fact that AIC hand out scholarship to support their football programs.

1. abc Offsiders program 21.3.21

In posts #3557 (point 2) & 3562 above, I wrote about the strong growth of jnr female club AF in Sydney; & also how the AFLW is turbocharging this growth- even though the much more prominent Swans (cf GWS) do not yet have an AFLW team. The lack of a Swans high profile AFLW team in NSW & ACT "handicaps" this female GR growth.

On Offsiders, K. Underwood said, referring to the AFLW's growth prospects

"The best players in the comp. this year are the teenagers, they are so good that are coming through. From what I have seen this year, I have no doubt the next 5 years, this is going to be the number 1 women's sport in Australia...The rate of improvement has gone through the roof, we'll see that rate continue to skyrocket".

Fellow panellist C. Wilson agreed with K. Underwood. Fellow panellists A. Nicholson & W. Aly did not dispute the claim that the AFLW will become the no.1 female comp. in c. 5 years- it could be inferred, from their following comments, they agreed with it.

(The AFLW has continued to increase its ratings in 2021- & usually outrates, pre the AFL start, like for like time & medium, the H & A A League men's & women's, Super Netball, & NBL.
However, historically, the AFLW ratings plummet c. 50-75% when the AFL starts. Rd. 8 of the 2021 AFLW, though, is, apparently, the highest ever for Rd. 8).

W. Aly said

"The expansion teams now are playing better football than the foundation teams in the first year [2017. My words & emphases in brackets]".

(Go to Offsiders 21.3 program- then go to 24 mins.5 secs. - 25 mins. 50 secs.)

If Underwood's & Wilson's prediction eventuates, this will obviously provide a massive lift in GR AF female comp. nos. all over Sydney, & the rest of NSW, ACT, & Qld.- & around Aust.

On Radio Sports Nation 927 radio 21.3, D. Harford Carlton AFLW coach agreed with Adam White that the AFLW has lost momentum this year- & Harford said the only solution to the decline in AFLW crowds, ratings etc. is for the AFLW to start much earlier ie NO overlap with the AFL.

They likely don’t have the numbers [Incorrect] for them to field football programs and when they compare the GPS to the AIC they don’t mention the fact that AIC hand out scholarship [Very few for AF; & irrelevant to GPS opposition to full season, all classes' AF comps. across whole GPS] to support their football programs.
You are incorrect.
Just as there is already strong support in the Brisbane AIC private school AF full season comps. after it was introduced in 2019, when GPS students were previously offered opportunities to play AF in the Brisbane GPS, strong AF player nos. in the GPS wanted to play.

You have also totally ignored the booming jnr AF club nos. across Greater Brisbane, including areas where GPS schools are located.
The GPS is simply discriminating against AF.

See my post today in the "What Are The Chances of Footy Overtaking League in NSW & Qld" thread for more info. on the GPS.

This includes the extraordinarily low, & almost shocking, no. of only 124 club male contact RU teams, from U12-U18 inclusive, in the Greater Brisbane jnr club RU comp. in 2019. GR AF club player nos. there are FAR superior to RU club player nos.
