On Radio Sports Nation 927 radio, D. Harford Carlton AFLW coach, apparently, agrees that the AFLW has lost momentum this year- & the only solution to the decline in AFLW ratings etc. is for the AFLW to start much earlier ie no overlap with the AFL.

That's a no brainer.
The AFLW have always wanted to be independent of the AFL but have accepted AFL scheduling.
I have been amazed that the AFLW has done so well in the circumstances.
At least it is still there as a possibility.

1. abc Offsiders program 21.3.21

In posts #3557 (point 2) & 3562 above, I wrote about the strong growth of jnr female club AF in Sydney; & also how the AFLW is turbocharging this growth- even though the much more prominent Swans (cf GWS) do not yet have an AFLW team. The lack of a Swans high profile AFL team in NSW & ACT "handicaps" female GR growth.

On Offsiders, K. Underwood said, referring to the AFLW's growth prospects

"The best players in the comp. this year are the teenagers, they are so good that are coming through. From what I have seen this year, I have no doubt the next 5 years, this is going to be the number 1 women's sport in Australia...The rate of improvement has gone through the roof, we'll see that rate continue to skyrocket".

Fellow panellist C. Wilson agreed with K. Underwood. Fellow panellists A. Nicholson & W. Ali did not dispute the claim that the AFLW will become the no.1 female comp. in c. 5 years- it could be inferred, from their following comments, they agreed with it.

(The AFLW has continued to increase its ratings in 2021- & usually outrates, pre the AFL start, like for like time & medium, the H & A A League men's & women's, Super Netball, & NBL.
However, historically, the AFLW ratings plummet c. 50-70% when the AFL starts. Rd. 8 of the 2021 AFLW, though, is, apparently, the highest ever for Rd. 8.
Notwithstanding this, in 2020, the NRLW Grand Final & female State Of Origin had monster ratings- IIRC, c. 400K+ & 650K+ average respectively, nationally).

W. Ali said

"The expansion teams now (I assume referring to St Kilda, Gold Coast, West Coast, & Richmond in 2020.) are playing better football than the foundation teams in the first year [2017. My words & emphases in brackets]".

(Go to Offsiders 21.3 program- then go to 24 mins.5 secs. - 25 mins. 50 secs.)

If Underwood's prediction eventuates, this will obviously provide a massive lift in GR AF female comp. nos. all over Sydney, & the rest of NSW, ACT, & Qld.

On Radio Sports Nation 927 radio, D. Harford Carlton AFLW coach, apparently, agrees that the AFLW has lost momentum this year- & the only solution to the decline in AFLW ratings etc. is for the AFLW to start much earlier ie no overlap with the AFL.

2.
You are incorrect.
Just as there is already strong support in the Brisbane AIC private school AF full season comps. after it was introduced in 2019, when GPS students were previously offered opportunities to play AF in the Brisbane GPS, strong AF player nos. in the GPS wanted to play.

You have also totally ignored the booming jnr AF club nos. across Greater Brisbane, including areas where GPS schools are located.
The GPS is simply discriminating against AF.

See my post today in the "What Are The Chances of Footy Overtaking League in NSW & Qld" thread for more info. on the GPS.

This includes the extraordinary low, & almost shocking, no. of only 124 club contact RU teams, from U12-U18 inclusive, in the Greater Brisbane jnr club RU comp.in 2019. GR AF player nos. are FAR superior.
You’re quoting stats about the AFLW and relating that to an all boys school sports comp and yes I am aware that one of the nine GPS schools is coed

Yes they do. Comfortably

there were less than 20K combined watching on TV or at the game for the Wanderers game on the weekend. And they're second on the ladder!!!!

And the Wanderers aren't a "self sustaining club". They are a propped up franchise.

Embarrassing

Haha, who is "you guys"? I'm clearly a Collingwood supporter....or did you mean "ALF" when you said "you guys"?

As I said, 11K on the telly and 6K in crowd. 17K total nationally on a Friday night.

Great - you spent 30 million a year to beat a competition with no marketing campaign by a few thousand TV screens.

Like I said Torps or Offsiders won't be reporting that

Hahaha, "no marketing campaign"....."offsiders".....you're hitting all the sad notes.

Are you one of those soccer fans that sit through a half hour of offsiders and then whinge that they give more air time to the league that pulls 300K fans a week a 4 million tv viewers rather the sport that barely gets that in a season?

You poor kid

Total deflection mode. Game supposedly growing but numbers say otherwise.

The AFL works in time frames within which national soccer leagues come in and out of existence

Around 250K would have been watching the Sydney and Brisbane game in NSW and QLD on Saturday night across FTA and Pay TV and at the game.

It doesn't really matter how long it takes for the Giants to take (and the Suns for that matter). It is like waves crashing against cliffs - eventually the cliffs wears down and, in the meanwhile, the waves will just continue being waves. Even in a pandemic year the AFL alone had $675M in revenues. The big clubs now bring in $75 to $100M a year with only ~$10M in distributions from the AFL. What is an extra $10M a year to the Giants relative to this?

The problem for the plastic wanderers is "now what"? They won a premiership and an Asian champions league in their first 18 months, are supposedly THE representative of Australian soccer in THE heartland of it.....and they are getting 6K to games and national prime time TV audiences of 11K.

Wanderers 17k total - thats a national broadcast figure of 11k on Fox - on a friday night. [Average games for the A-league on fox streaming are about 15k.]
Giants 17k on FTA in Sydney alone on sunday afternoon (about the same regionally), 5k at the ground, plus another 174k in Melbourne on 7, about 100k regionally, and 128k nationally on Fox.

Bringbacktorps isnt the only who needs to report all facts.

Talk ional prime time TV audiences of 11K.

Talk of wanderers or national audience is deflection. Still, wanderers got larger live crowd so you can't even claim total victory there. Ratings in Sydney would be about 10k difference (how many screens is that?!). That's what 30 mill a year gets you.

Funny the only growth you guys can quote are fuzzy stuff like members or auskick.
Torps even listed comments from offsiders as evidence above - ha

For once.

Ratings in Sydney would be about 10k difference (how many screens is that?!).

Probably more. Ratings for FTA in Sydney alone were 17k. Ratings on Fox in Sydney unknown - but definitely more than the national 11k that Wanderers got.

That's what 30 mill a year gets you.

No, thats what about 15m a year will get you - the club is entitled to 11m a year as part of its share of the media rights. And it doesnt factor in the ancillary benefits like development.

Funny the only growth you guys can quote are fuzzy stuff like members or auskick.

members are a decent comparison, since most clubs work the same way.

You still haven't the faintest clue of economics.
There's a huge difference between spending and cost.
The AFL spend money knowing they will recover money - simple.
You reminding people of how much the AFL spent on AFL only reinforces the strength of the AFL competition.
The is the problem facing the NRL if it wishes to expand.
Soccer just cannot compete.

The relevance of the national audience is that know that the sydney numbers can only be some fraction of that. It's that sad 🤣

I don't know where you get $30M from, but as the Wookie says the Giants only get an additional ~$15M and that would include AFLW and likely academy funding etc. They also generate about $20M themselves which would be a lot more then the Wanderers

Obviously also that money largely pays players and staff in what are far far larger professional operations than your mickey mouse a league franchises. It is not marketing spend. Though the kicker is, there would be kids who met Coniglio at their primary school in 2012 who are now at university. The same kids would have seen the Wanderers win the ACL around that time and would have worked out how vacuous it all is. That is the awful truth.
