I agree that he has been playing well and would be very unlucky to get dropped but he is not untouchable - he is on the fringe of best 22. Vlas and Broad play a similar role and someone's gotta go. Broad has been the one to make way before

No they don't really.

Broad is more of a shutdown defender that covers off all free opposing forwards and allows Short and Bash to run up the ground and more importantly Tigga and nowdays Grimes to play intercept.

Now that Balta and Dave run in the ruck, Broad covers up their tall forward.

At other times hes playing shut down on any other forward tall or small whilst rotating through the defenders whilst they have a spell.

Thats his job, and why we played better then won the flag when he came back in, it settled the defence back to what they know, Dimma even said as much as what they were trying hadnt really worked as well as they were wanting it to or something to that effect.

He may have had more opportunity to get forward more last week and hit more contests because he helped fill Tiggas role for that game, but when Vlas is in its back to the less glamorous stuff for Nathan, and the machine works as always.

The new footy rules requiring more speed and aerobic capabilities in all players will see an end for the time being of 2 big rucks.

Out of curiosity went back to 2000 to look. We’ve ended up with 67 six times. Jerome Webberly, Sam Lloyd, Dan Butler, Nathan Broad and we passed twice. Crazy that we’ve had that pick 6 times in 20 drafts.

The only other notable players were Graeme Johncock, and Witts the GC Ruckman.

Sydney is not a bad side this year.
Third quarter specialists.
9.2 versus Brisbane, 6.5 versus Adelaide.
Match-winning quarters.
No Franklin in round one.
Three new players to watch out for, in order, McDonald (five goals), Gulden (3) and Wicks, playing across half forward.
A new look for them which is why they are surprising ATM.

McDonald's had a great start, but Gulden's our main worry, his two games so far have been incredible, got all the tools to be a star. Be interesting to see how deep into the season he can keep up the red hot form he's had so far.

Campbell (pick #5 last year) is a two game rookie and also looks a topliner, great size for a 1st year player and a very classy ball user.

Warner's a 5-gamer to watch out for too, debuted against us last year and didn't do much, but he's doing very well rotating through the middle this year.

Surely you jest!

Broad was awesome, no way he gets dropped.

EDIT: Also probably untouchable in the best 22, very important to our structure.
Broad is so versatile and dual sided and VERY important in plugging holes i get the feeling both key defenders Astbury and Grimes will be given a week off between rounds 8-18. to get our defence in tip top shape come finals times. 5 day breaks and interstate trips will be factored in.

What TV do you have? Sometimes would like to have that feature.

Yeh, I know. Just times when they are commenting on plays by our guys...I'm sort of interested.
To be serious tho it seems a common complaint in my household on general stuff where there is background crowd noise.
It's an LG webOS...if anyone can help.

If it has EQ it would be worth trying turning down the highest few and perhaps even the lowest one or two frequencies so the range of frequency where the human voice pitches has a bit more chance to cut through above the rest of the noise spectrum.

If it doesn't have EQ and you have a sound system with a graphic equaliser which you can run the sound of the TV through, same solution would apply.

Hope that helps. :thumbsu:

The problem is we can’t afford to carry an 8 man backline when Soldo/CCJ are back. The only reason Broad got back into the side at the end of last season (semi/prelim/gf) is because Soldo went down and Chol wasn’t up to it, so we brought Broad back in to allow Astbury/Balta to chop out Nank. IMO Dimma likes to play the second ruck if he can which means one of the defenders has to go to allow the bench spot to go to the second ruck.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t want Broad out but who else takes the hit?

Astbury
Balta
Grimes
Vlaustin
Short
Baker
Houli
Broad

Maybe it’s Houli that doesn’t come back in unless there’s an injury to Short or Baker 🤷‍♂️ Or is it Baker that’s out?

It’s difficult.

Riewoldt-Lynch-Castagna
Rioli-Martin-Lambert
Nank-Prestia-Cotchin
McIntosh-Bolton-Caddy/Pickett
Short-Vlaustin-Baker
Grimes-Balta-Astbury

Bench: Edwards, Graham, spot 1, spot 2

Who gets the last 2 spots?
Aarts/Broad/Houli/Pickett or Caddy/2nd Ruck/Ross

If it was my choice and everybody was healthy I’d go:

McIntosh-Bolton-Pickett
Short-Vlaustin-Baker
Grimes-Balta-Astbury

Bench: Edwards, Graham, Soldo, Broad

Leaving Caddy, Houli, Aarts, Ross to fight it out for the emergency spot.
Crazy times.

Crazy, juicy, frikkin awesome times.

Hahahahahahahahaha.

Having to try to squeeze All Australian types back into the side. Making good young kids earn their stripes the hard way. Having a queue of them in the rack ready to go. (See what I did there)

Sometimes I just stop what I'm doing, look up at the sky and laugh out loud. I laugh and laugh.

I have also been known to randomly walk around with both arms high in the air triumphantly.

Deez crazy wonderful times.

Important to note also that when Jordan Dawson takes the kickouts he generally goes VERY long. He takes the whole 20m and goes bang long to the centre or almost to the wing. They hang out the back and take off and have been cracking teams open.

Yep, they're playing a very direct, long down the corridor brand of football - which is always dangerous for oppo sides, us included.

So far, they've had the cattle to pull it off, gonna be a fascinating contest. :thumbsu:

But will it work against the best defence in the league 🤔

Thats probably 1 of the easiest plays to defend for a team like Richmond

Players like Nank / Jack / Tom push up the ground to the wing with our outside riders (small fowards ) behind
Our talls contest the incoming ball and if grounded the smalls whisk it away leaving their defence exposed due to their defenders rolling back to contest.

Its teams like the Crows which have younger inexperienced talls and leaders not being able to coordinate the players

McDonald does lead deepest, into the forward pocket at times.
Gulden across the classic half forward line.
Wicks furthest out, a low half forward flank, high wing.
They have basically added three forwards this year.
McDonald the tall forward, then mixing up with Heeney and of course Papley.
McDonald sometimes stretches as decoy lead out to the pocket and Heeney marks at pure centre half forward.
The third quarters are the key quarters in how they set up, nine goals and six goals respectively.
It's a successful formula, so far, so you would imagine they would stick with it.

What Sydney doesn't like is when the opposition clutters their defence.
They started to panic, lost composure, missed handballs, Walker snapped goals in the pack.
As you say, they like a smooth transition out of defence to set up on their own terms.
They would probably wilt under a repeated rebound pressure.
They would also fear a "switch" because they are moving the ball so fast along one line.

McDonald, Gulden, Heeney, Papley, and to a lesser extent, Wicks, need to be addressed.
It's a new look team with a rapid style.
If Dawson is the key driver out of defence he must be stopped.
McDonald is relatively lightly built, only 18.
He should receive attention, five goals already.
Gulden is only 18 too, hit them both hard.
