It took Southgate 45 minutes to realise Declan Rice could do the job on his own - so Phillips was pushed forward, but still kept passing it backwards. It took Southgate another 25 minutes to realise there are other players who are better than Phillips in an advanced midfield role.

It can work if you have the right players (and a coach who knows what he's doing). When Hammers are defending Rice and Soucek both sit deep, when they go forward Rice usually sits and Soucek pushes on. I reckon Rice plus Henderson would work like that. If Henderson isn't fit I'd like to see Bellingham given a go at that role.

Just read that Lewandowski is out of the England v Poland game. It's a big out but Poland will still be dangerous.
