Society/Culture Has cancel culture gone too far?

He isn't cancelled, he just can't post on BigFooty. He is free to start his own forum, just has to hope Chief, the most stable genius, and his big tech mates don't de-platform him.

I would also like to know what he did. He's argumentative but usually pretty articulate.
I think he just got a few points on a main board game day thread and will be back in a few days. You can ask him then.

You can't even try to have a critical assessment of Churchill without people calling for you to be banned. These people are literally trying to cancel history
Don't expect to get much engagement. This sort of example is best left through to the keeper.

Gave it a week or so. That was predictable.

What the right call "Political correctness" and what the rest of us call "Not being bigoted assholes".

Although they tend to get a bit...upset when this is pointed out to them.

So all of your family members from previous generations are bigoted assholes for standing by and allowing the existence, or perhaps even supporting by purchasing the odd Golden Gaytime?

You'd Better Loosen Up, as what you are doing here is trying to produce a false narrative from what I said. The origin of the word gay pre-dates its use to describe someones sexuality but has also been used more recently in a way to harass and demean individuals who identify as same-sex attracted. As far as changing an ice-creams name because of that change, well, thats entirely up to the company itself to decide. They own the rights to it, if they feel it would benefit them to change it they will, otherwise they'll keep it as it is.

This particular situation is one person seeking attention, that much is clear, and even if he gets 1000 or more signatures I doubt he'll be canceling anything other than his 5 minutes of attention.

Just want to confirm that conservatives are not massive hypocrits.

Hahahaha

Of course they are:

It is an American list, but from Colin Kaepernick, to the Dixie Chicks, to Jane Fonda, to French Fries, conservatives are more than willing to “cancel” anything they find objectionable.

There must be some good examples of Australian conservatives employing the same sookish mentality. Right wing politicians calling on a Muslim woman to leave the country because they didn’t like a tweet she made on Anzac Day comes to mind.

Going a bit further back they had a sook about Cathy Freeman flying an aboriginal flag after a race and wanted it banned.

Some conservatives blew a gasket at drag queens performing in the opening ceremony at the Sydney Olympics. More recently they wanted drag queens banned from reading to kids at Libraries. Is that not being “cancelled”?

Margaret Court wanted people to stop spending money at companies that supported same sex marriage. Most right wing commentators here wanted Muslims outright “cancelled” a few years back.

There’s surely plenty more examples of right wingers sooking and wanting “cancellations” over things they don’t like....

Does that surprise anyone though. If one side is cancelling, of course the opposition will start looking for the same. There are many smart liberals out there that have warned against cancel culture. And now we are seeing cancellations on both sides and it wont end. Tit for tat.

You might want to read what I posted. Right wing Political Correctness has been going on far longer than the current “leftist cancel culture” wave (which in reality is just acknowledging that some things that were acceptable in the past aren’t acceptable now).

Right Wing Politcial Correctness for the most part is just an evolution of religious Puritanism, you could say it can be traced back to the Salem witch hunts, combined with a good dose of nationalism.

Right wingers didn’t just start their own “cancel culture” this year in response to Disney putting a 12 second content warning on Peter Pan or Dr Seuss stopping the print of books showing black people as apes.

You are talking about religion which has been poison for a couple thousand years.

Whenever the religious right has tried to cancel things; rocknroll, space invaders, Ned Flanders etc people pushed against it and grew it bigger than ever because they knew that cancelling was ridiculous.

Except now when the left cancels something there is no bigger power pushing back against the hate because they are on the same side or are afraid of that side.

Say for a minute this fever dream was accurate - wouldn't it just be indicative of changing majority societal attitudes?

Yes. Once upon a time it was acceptable to not count Indigenous Australians human as beings. That women couldn't vote. The mere suggestion of being gay meant you got bashed. Non whites were banned from migrating here. Drink driving was just fine. All of those things once upon a time were acceptable.

Then society changed. Those things weren't "canceled" because of "PC leftists" at the time having a sook.

Those who whinge about it are essentially dinosaurs who wish they could call black people "n*gg*r" or "a*e" to their face. Like Adam Goodes, it's all the same right wing commentators pushing the same talking points.

Everyone has their own definition, to me "cancel culture" is actions such as finding controversial comments from a person from 10+ years ago and having them get fired over it. There's 2 problems with this:
1: that person would have been younger and probably dumber back then, and may well have changed their ways.
2: the comments made over a decade ago may have been considered acceptable and normal by society back then, but no longer are.

Then there's people who are simply out of touch, sheltered, maybe uneducated etc. For example, I believe the 12 year old girl who called Adam Goodes an ape was not fully aware of the historical context of such slurs.

So I think we're prioritising the punishment of people who made mistakes, rather than punishing those who intentionally spread hate.

Is this spreading hate?:

It was very wrong. He claims it was a brain fade, listening to the recording it sounds like he recognised his own stupidity quickly.

There's a cut in the audio at about :45 seconds. There was probably a commercial break or a song, in which a producer entered the studio and told Eddie he'd better apologise quick smart.

A brain fade means you revert to how you really talk and think in private and mistakenly say it in public. These people love to make "ape" jokes in private, and unfortunately he slipped up and did it on air, probably thinking Luke Darcy was "one of boys" and it would be OK. Someone who doesn't have those underlying thoughts or doesn't make those comments in private doesn't have to worry about accidentally becoming a racist in public because of a "brain fade"
