List Mgmt. 2021 List Management

It's the output they are producing. Most are capable of so much more. Therein lies the reason for our frustration.

100% agree...

The number of top draft picks and top talent on our list...
But we not only struggle to make the 8, but we're struggling to even win a game.

The powerhouse teams of the 2000's Sydney, West Coast, Collingwood, Geelong, Hawthorn and Richmond..
All have or have had
  1. Ruthless Winning Attitude
  2. Strong Culture
  3. Outstanding Player Development.
Carlton don't have a ruthless streak or winning at all costs attitude in the team, don't know if it's coached or will come with the confidence of winning

Club is building a culture, not sure if it's the right culture. But it's a culture that the players seem to buy into
as we haven't lost any players for a long time.

Player Development
We embark on a full list and club rebuild 6 years ago..
The Board spend large portion of soft cap wanting some sort of miracle from favourite son recruiter (SOS) and Guru fitness guy (AR)
which hasn't materialised to anything yet!

The club have provided the team with a sub standard director of football, sub standard coaching panel and fully neglect one of, if not the most important part of a successful side, Player Development.

We not only have neglected this 6 years ago, but are still neglecting it now.
There is no proof that we have even identified it, except for an unknown poster on here.

If we don't fix this at the end of the year, the chance for all this talented kids may pass them by

Hard to argue with any of that, but the club would have to be insane not to have recognised the problem by now - recruiting Luke Power at the start of last year is a good start

+ Playfair (gone pretty quickly with COVID) & DOK has a pretty impressive junior development record, doesn’t he?

Interestingly we have a very high proportion of players from other clubs in our side. 11 in this week.
An indictment on our development, especially with the picks we’ve had.
Yep been thinking about this one lately other than Weitering Walsh and to a lesser degree Cripps whose form has dropped off his last season and a bit .
Name a draftee of ours that has consistently stood up and performed admirably over the last couple of years .
We are being held together by a thread by recruits from other clubs imo .
So at this point in time from a draft perspective the rebuild has failed us .
Still time and development to come that can change that and i think it will but atm our draft input into the team performance is pretty slim pickings .

Docherty Jones Plowman Saad Pittonet Williams Newnes Setterfield Martin McGovern Fogarty ... Marchbank if fit

Since Cripps only Walsh & Weitering have been stand outs

Some show promise McKay Fisher Williamson TDK & Charlie if he ever gets fit

then add veterans Casboult Ed Murphy and Betts

and that is pretty much the list !!

And Ed started out at Adelaide + Eddie was traded in with a draft pick from there too. Further distorts the figures.

Fitness/injuries the issue on our others. Season 4, 5 & 6 and opportunities need to be seen & grasped but not many positions being opened up to view with the current buy up, trade-in for our list since ‘18.
2015: Plowman (21)
2016: Marchbank (20)
2017: Kennedy (20)
2018: McGovern (24), Setterfield (20), Newman (25)
2019: Newnes (26)#, Martin (24)** Betts (33), Pittonet (23)
2020: Williams (26)**, Saad (26), Fogarty (21), McDonald (24)
** free hit other than coin but L/T deals # free hit

2015: Weitering, McKay, Curnow, Cuningham, Silvagni (Kennedy)
2016: SPS, Fisher, Williamson (Setterfield)
2017: Dow, LOB, TDK (Fogarty)
2018: Walsh, Stocker <Gibbons, Cottrell> [Owies]
2019: Kemp, Philp, Ramsay, Honey
2020: Durdin, Carroll, Parks

That leaves 6 players from before the rebuild at the 2015 draft in Murphy, Ed (32), Casboult (31), Jones (30), Docherty (28), Cripps (26)

the big question is how many are ticks .... Weitering & Walsh are the only 2 stand outs from the draft .... there are a few others that look promising but need to get to the next level

It's a big worry when you look at who we've brought in over the last 10 years. So many previous high draft picks haven't reached their potential with us.

2009 - Kane Lucas (pick 12)
2010 - Matthew Watson (pick 18)
2011 - Josh Bootsma (pick 22)
2012 - Troy Menzel (pick 11)
2014 - Blaine Boekhorst (pick 19)
2015 - David Cuningham (pick 23)
2016 - Petrevski-Seton (pick 6)
2017 - Paddy Dow (pick 3) and Lachie O'Brien (pick 10)
2018 - Liam Stocker (pick 19)
2019 - Sam Philp (pick 20)

Who can say with confidence, that we've successfully developed these kids into AFL ready players? Cripps, Walsh and Weiters are the only ones in the entire last decade. Harry is too inconsistent, Charlie/Kemp mostly injured, and TDK too raw. Add on top of that, that we are playing Setters, Samo and Cunners out of position, and what do we honestly expect?

If this is the thinking, we could be n some trouble on the LM. 2021 was one season too many IMO.

“On completing his 288th Carlton career game against Fremantle, Murphy will find himself 24 games adrift of Stephen Silvagni on 312 and a further 16 shy of John Nicholls on 328 – both of whom Murphy could surpass with injury-free seasons through 2021 and ’22”.

The club seem obsessed with personal milestones and feel good emotional content.
What more could supporters yearn for ...

Times have changed. It's not a simple win-loss business anymore, it's about fan engagement/sentiment, appealing to the younger generation and social/cultural awareness (which is obviously important).

I would actually love to know what means we go to to identify talented kids with an overseas born parent.

it wouldn’t surprise me if we wait until one shows up in Nab league playing for knights.

We should be communicating with schools pe teachers, little aths clubs, sneakily with soccer clubs/orgs, basketball etc.

identifying these kids at 10-13 yrs old and investing in them.

Nah we wouldn’t be doing that🙄
Further to my post above I read there is a kid named Domenic Akuei playing for Northern Knights who looks to be of Sudanese background.

He is a freak athlete played full back and in the ruck, huge leap, fast.

Just checked and he is part of our next gen academy.

Excited to follow his progress this season

Stocker should be getting a full year in the afl to see what he can do.

The social media aspect - whilst important to engage with some of the fans - wears very thin when on field results are poor. Most of the feedback comments on Instagram in response to recent CFC posts are snarky at the moment.

The relentless flow of fluff from the media department obviously appeals to some but i dunno, a committed, driven, hardened, honest football department/playing list appeals more to this weary soul ...

Be nice if Cripps signed for unders. I doubt Harry would (no reason, just a feeling).
That’s how premiers and dynasties are built. Albeit the players who take cuts are fairly certain of their post playing careers in media, coaching or otherwise.
