Player Watch #26 Riley Collier-Dawkins

Why not? We clearly don't see him as a fit in the current set up. If he doesn't get a game this year he's gone. How many other players can you name that have been on a list for 3 years and not played a game?
Plenty of project type players that their bodies weren’t ready for afl level... probably wasn’t ready for VFL level to be honest
He was still growing in his first year here

Generally they are KPPs or ruckman, not many midfielders in that pool. I want to see this kid succeed as much as the next guy.

But they keep hyping him up and then not playing him, gets damn frustrating.

Yeah I don’t like the hype either, not fair on the kid.
He’s clearly still developing and growing into his body... don’t have to be a ruckman to be like that
He was so scrawny and not reached his full height when drafted and obviously the club knows what they are doing with signing him until end of 2022

From watching him closely the last few years,

He bites off more than he can chew

RCD attempts to break tackles very often in the same way Cripps does. Problem is, he isn't as strong and as big as Patty and whilst it works in the junior levels for him, even at pre season games, he has been caught out and pinged multiple times. This can result in catastrophic turnovers in a season where teams have no time to set up defensively.

He hasn't put on size
Has got very little muscle definition after years in the system. He certainly isn't built like an athlete, he never developed thst way physically. Where it becomes an issue, he relies on physicality to play the game, wants to be in contests but isn't physically strong enough in AFL level to play that. He would be getting games if he could tackle and run up and down the ground and cover defensively. But once again, looks to play an attacking style and gets us caught out.

Hence why i have said on multiple occasions. His best chance is to become Grimes apprentice. If you compare he's actually a clone of Grimes.
Bite the bullet Tigers. He'll never ever be a aFL standard mid.No Tank for starters.
its the Back 6 for RCD or bust.

Insightful posts, I can see the arguments. I do recall in the pre-season game against Collingwood he got pinged a couple of times in “high risk” areas of the ground where you just gotta play smart and give off a handball.

Was played forward in the practice match on the weekend according to a watcher. Good chance they want him to develop other aspects of his game. He was a forward mid when drafted, so maybe that is where they see him now. At 193cm he could be a hard match up as he has good speed. We really need a lead up half forward as well.

All mids benefit from having a second position unless they are pure mids like Prestia. They tried it with Ross last year. Pickett and Caddy. Martin, Edwards, Bolton, Lambert, Graham all have multiple roles, why not get that into RCD's game. It is round 3 and people are either writing him off or stating he will leave. Perhaps they have said we want to give you X amount of weeks to develop your game, then when you come in you are more likely to stay.

He has lots of attributes for AFL, and is probably champing at the bit, but they know he can play midfield as his performance in 2019 and Hardwicks repeated stating that he is very close last season. So there is a good chance they rate him. His competition is Ross, who is a pure mid and a good one and Martyn who we don't know much about but seems to be doing everything right now. Not easy to break into our side.

And the last time you saw him play was as an 18-19 year old. Yes he did as you say, but he also hit very hard for a young kid. 2 years he may not have gotten a lot bigger, but you can guarantee he will be a lot stronger. Is very strong in the hips and legs. Richmond don't build up their players, Cotchin, Martin and Ross are lighter than when they started.

has he ever got over 15 disposals in the vfl ?
A few times, the same question was asked last year and I managed to find his stats, but can't find again. From memory 23 and 20 a few times. But you make it sound like he has been there for years. First year player playing inside mid is a good effort alone, unless you are a man child like Ross. What happened last year??

Don’t forget Dow mate, he’s gonna be a very good mid for us imo

Sadly Riley appears to have shrunk. RFC site has him listed as 189cm, still tall but not Key Position Tall.

I think he definitely needs to develop another aspect/role to his game though, whether it be forward or back.

He may have shrunk or just been measured differently but there is a few different measurements over the years.

Richmond has him at 189cm but in November 2018 he said he had measured himself at 193cm, but the draft camp measured him 191cm.

Agree he has turned out to be a bust so far but I still would like him to get a game. He would be feeling pretty crap and his confidence would be shot.
Just give him a game and see how he goes he could be caught in a rut and may need some faith shown towards him. Give the kid a taste FFS, Egg got a game on the back of no defensive pressure go figure!

There is no way they will delist a pick 20 without a look at him. We know nothing about his development or where they want him to play. VB may be right, he may be delisted but given he is contracted next year, it is unlikely just yet. Surely he will get games this year.
