We really didn't handle West Coasts talls at all.
Did we actually handle their talls?
I think we handled them fine. They had 11 shots between the three of them, and were just freakishly accurate. If someone told me before the game they’d have that many shots, I’d be fine with it.

Hipwood, Daniher and Cameron are good but they’re nowhere near Ryan, Kennedy, Darling and Allen in terms of quality and cohesiveness. They scare me a hell of a lot less.

And English ?? Where you got him playing.
Cant have the two rucks, schache, Bruce and Naughton Fwd - jsut cant.
I absolutely think we can bevo even said himself that one of schache or jamarra can fit in with the tall mix we are playing, if schache or jamarra played in the roll of scott or McNeil while they played forward there wouldn't be a massive change

Crozier was traded in as a forward and was thrown back when he was just ok in the forward role.
Caleb Daniel is another.
Bailey Williams? Drafted as a mid and has played everywhere, although I'd argue his early career form was best when played behind the ball so it's just a reversion to his best position.

Bailey Williams can be a gun midfielder, if it wasn't for our deepest midfield in history.

nice skill to have being able to bang a goal from 50m reliably, particularly when your team plays a hard F50 press.

I see Jong and Wally being similar players for us, potentially handy medium forwards who could pinch hit as mids but have many players ahead of them in the midfield. The conundrum is - being essentially squeezed out of the midfield, are they good enough in a forward role to beat out specialist forwards? It seems the answer is no.

I love to see Lin Jong get another crack at it although to not think Mattdougie could handle it.

Hipwood is the epitome of a boiled spud(now watch him come out and kick 8) but if he beats us then we have had a bad day

But why? He fumbles and handballs poorly. Really goes against our style.

Guess we will see, Bev has always liked to give him a run.

Like Jong where he is right now - ok depth.

Why?

Who’s spot does he take?

What does he add to this team needs at the moment accepting his errors are a given and are the main reason he has never been a best 22 lock

Was watching him against Pies. Could not get near it and was towelled up by Roughead in the last qtr.
Pencil him in for 3.3 minimum....

He is legitimately an average footy player.

Anyone making him part of an “elite” forward line is delusional

Hipwoods a good player with fast ball movement, he’s not easy to contain on the lead. No superstar but he can towel you up if you’re not careful

Only one player is elite in the Lions forward line. It’s not Hipwood and it’s certainly not Daniher. I know we will probably bring in Lewis Young but I would prefer someone with more rebounding skills.... like Buku. Play Buku on Hipwood and this will limit his ability to take marks on the lead. Keath can handle Daniher.

Cameron is the elite one. Duryea gets first crack and Williams for back up. JJ would be fast enough but he doesn’t have the defensive mindset required.

I have always been a big fan of Lin Jong. I think he would have played in our 2016 premiership had it not been for injury. And he could well be a 100+ game established player for us by now.

He gives a lot of effort, and has many exciting attributes such as his pressure, tackling, pace and marking. His decision making, disposal and kicking in front of goal let him down.

I just don’t see where he fits in this team if we have a good run with injuries. He is a depth player 23-27 on the list in my view. He could be a sub at times.

I cannot see him as a defender at all, and there is no spot in the midfield unless he goes to the next level (which he showed some limited signs of pre-injury).

This leaves the forward line. Now, he can take a grab and apply pressure around the contest, he can play small and big, so that is all a big tick! But he butchers the ball in front of goal and we don’t need any more of that as it is in ample supply already. If you’re going to play as a small forward, then you need to be accurate in front of goal as opportunities are often limited.

If he could improve his kicking in front of goal, or get more of the ball in the midfield and limit those disposal errors, then he might be best 22. But I am yet to be convinced he can do it.

Hope I am wrong as he is a great clubman and always has a genuine crack at the contest.

I know a few berries

There is a blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, loganberry and a Chuck Berry. The lions have 2 Berry's Jarrod and Tom maybe the plan to play both on the Bont to have a chance of beating him.
As long as they don't get Tackleberry onto him he was a mean SOB

If Jong didn’t get injured McLean doesn’t play and we don’t win the flag imo.

Jong has had more time than anyone as injured as him should get and he doesn’t improve this team that requires skill by hand which he doesn’t have.

No one will ever question his effort but if we are going back to Jong we are going backwards

That’s a nice reach even by your standards Mr dougie

He isn't a contested marker. He is a hit-up fwd/loose ball or ground ball fwd. More than happy to sacrifice height to match his speed and agility.
Daniher is a bit the same, but most of his goals seem to be in general play or from a free kick in a marking contest.
Both would be susceptible to floating defenders coming across.
If Young does come in, I'd be a lot more confident with him taking the higher fwd of the two. Keath will be more confident 1v1 and less likely to panic and infringe, so he takes deeper forward. It's the free kicks within 30m of goal that will kill us imo.

Young yet to be seen 🤷🏼‍♂️. Big test for him but by god if Young can hit some strong form it will go along way for the team taking the next step!

Young has played Hipwood twice. In R20 2017 he played on Hipwood for 36 minutes with 0 goals kicked and in R8 2018 he played on Hipwood for 44 minutes with 0 goals kicked.

Overall Young has had 28 goals kicked against him at an average of 2 goals per game but he does seem to like playing the Lions.

From someone who is happy to call a spud a spud, do us all a favor and use your brain before reactively making statements like that.

Have you been following Jong’s form in the VFL? From all accounts (including the coaches) he’s knocking down the door. Check out his three goals below that went along with being the best mid on the ground Friday.

I don't think anyone is debating he's always been a good VFL player...

Too slow of a decision maker and lacks awareness for AFL.

Bruce kicked 10 goals on the weekend against the worst side in the comp which he also kicked 6 against last year and who he has a habit of dominating (at St Kilda as well). Not taking anything away from the effort, but he doesn't have any points in the bag besides this match. He's guaranteed the next 2 games, but if he only kicks 0-2 goals in that period then his place shouldn't be guaranteed if Schache is kicking goals in the VFL or another tall.

Wowee.

Bruce kicked a goal and took 11 marks in a low scoring game in round 1.

In round 2 he kicked 3 from distance against one of the better tall defenses in the league.

He had 8 on the board last week when in the last qtr he tried to beat 2 Norf defenders and ended up getting absolutely pile-driven into the turf, only to get up and kick 2 more.

I hope you're not a school teacher because those kids are in for a tough year...

Gardner's injury gives Lewis Young a chance to make CHB his own. Personally think he has lot more skill than Gardner and could be the missing piece for us to go all the way this season. Other changes West and Jong for McNeill and Scott.

I think people get a bit carried away with Young's potential (how long can you keep using that word) and his college quarterback good looks.

At the moment I'd back Gardner ahead of him with regard to strength, willingness to put his body on the line, and the ability to hit a 40m pass.

If Young comes good and when Gardner comes back from injury, both of them plus Keath should be in the backline. Need three 195 ish cm guys down there.
