I've seen 4 not paid tonight?

Umpires are red hot on calling play on whej a guy thinks about stepping iff their mark - but not paying 50 for encroaching the protected zone or not 'standing'.

Is this the round we've been waiting for? The inevitable change that the umpires spring on everyone for some unbeknown reason??

That's about 6 or 7 now where players have shuffled on the mark after being told to 'stand'.

Clearly a relaxing of the rule.
Richmond were doing the same thing in round 1, it has become a tactic to shuffle around while getting to the mark preventing the quick ball movement. it has basically become pointless and just annoying same as the ruck nomination rule sick of hearing stand and who is going up 300 times a game.

Arent you meant to get a few seconds from after the mark is taken to move around before stand is called though? Some tonight stand was called immediately after the whistle was blown. Hocking explained it after the preseason games that the player is meant to have time to shuffle across after the mark is taken before stand is called so they can still protect the corridor.

Good to see someone understands the rule, you can move across all you like until the umpire yells stand, if you move after that then you get pinged such as what happened with McIntosh's brain fade.

It should be relaxed. The rule itself is fine but it should only be called for the obvious one where someone moves off the mark. Moving half a step shouldn't be paid a 50m penalty.

Does anyone know why the umpires aren’t calling the line the kicker can’t deviate from properly? How can the man on the mark be forced to keep still when the kicker is nowhere near the straight line back to the centre of the attacking goal line??

depends who's umpiring, as usual. to watch dom sheed run around the man on the mark and kick a goal from 50 wasn't fun. it's a mockery. it's gifting teams goals and it has to stop. maybe the ump forgot to call play on. maybe he should be dropped.

It's not designed as a punishment though.

It's designed to prevent the man on the mark from defending space, and in particular cutting off the 45 degree kick.

It doesn't really matter if it's one step or ten - if they block that kick then they're manipulating the rule.

Clear misunderstanding of the rule. The umpire only calls stand when the player reaches the mark or stops, so you will see players slowly making their way to the mark and that's fine. Even a tiny shuffle or jumping up and down is fine. It is taking a clear large step or two that will get pinged. Has been the directive for months.

Kind of makes the whole rule pointless doesn't it? If players are taking 2-3 seconds to get to the mark jumping around on the way there the player who took the mark can't immediately play on without that person chasing them so it doesn't free up the quick play as it was intended to do.

In play you can see the man going to the mark is naturally hesitant and even when walking to the mark they are worried about the possible 50m penalty. This alone gives the player with the ball plenty of time to exploit this.

Nah I disagree, I see players intentionally milking the time it takes to get to the mark and moving once after being told to stand knowing they can get away with it now. They aren't fearful of giving away a free because they know the afl doesn't want it to take over games and have to be removed again. Most of the good teams are using this as a tactic now, Richmond in particular look like it has been drilled into them.

It was only a matter of time before coaches worked out a way to clog up and slow down the game again.

Funny seeing Fantasia head fake the Bulldogs player standing the mark on the weekend, and get him badly. Shuffled about 3 or 4 genuine steps to his left!

Fantasia looked at the umpire, pointed at what was happening, which the umpire clearly saw - yet nothing happened!!

The rule is dead man.

Why do the AFL pull this s**t?
