"His effort was super. He's just getting better every week. He competes really hard and there were a couple of occasions where he had three or four efforts in a row, which his teammates noticed. He's been building his tank to be able to do that, so we're starting to see the rewards in games."

This sounds very promising

Injuredddddd. Just a rolled ankle but given the last couple of rolled ankles at the club have resulted in a year off we'll wait and see...
“Unfortunately Cody got injured early. He rolled his ankle, so that was bad luck for him. Hopefully it’s not too bad but we’re not sure how he’ll come up.”

And injury report says he'll miss a week.
Young defender Cody Brand is likely to miss Essendon’s VFL season opener after suffering an ankle injury in the side’s final practice match.

The Dons’ No.53 pick in the 2020 NAB AFL Draft will look to be available the following week when the VFL Bombers return to Melbourne.

“Cody injured his ankle on Friday night in the second quarter (after he) landed heavily on it,” Murphy said.

“It’s nothing too serious, but he’ll be touch and go this week because there’s a bit of swelling in the ankle we’ll have to manage across the week.

“He’ll most likely miss this week and be available the following week.”

Not ideal but realistically, Brisbane will only have Ballenden and McStay as key forwards, wecan cover them with Reid and Ambrose/McLarty/Eyre

First game back from injury, got better as the game wore on
Cody Brand
Stats: Seven disposals, one mark, one tackle

“[Cody] started a bit slow. It was his first game back from injury. The longer the game wore on the better he got. He competed really fiercely in the high balls that came in and had some nice spoils, so it ended up being that the longer the game went, the better he got.”

Brand's got one of those massive builds.

Reckon he ends up playing at 100kgs and he'll be one of those blokes like Corbett or Townsend who hits like he's made of concrete.

At the moment it looks like he's struggling to carry the size around.

100% game time in his second game back from injury.

Cody Brand
Stats: 15 disposals, six marks, two tackles

“The good thing from Cody was that he played 100 per cent game time. When he was tired he made some errors but it was probably to be expected. A couple of times he got beaten out the back which was disappointing, and I know he was disappointed in that. To his credit he did a good job because he had to stay on the ground the whole time with the injuries we had.”

Got better the longer the game went (aka "took a while to work his way into the game").

Cody Brand
Stats: 16 disposals, two marks, two tackles

“‘Brandy’ was good for us. He defended really well. I thought that the longer the game went, the better he got. Again, he took a couple of nice marks where he was really strong in the contest and really brave. He marked when he had to and spoiled when he had to. He used the ball well this week when he got his opportunities.”

Hurt his hand in the VFL apparently, but played out the game with it.

Cody Brand
Stats: 17 disposals, five marks

“Cody played in our back line and showed some really promising growth in his one-on-ones. Box Hill are renowned for their contested marks in their forward 50, and I just thought he competed super well and showed a bit of grit to play out the game with an injured hand, so that was a real positive.”

Test for this weekend after missing two weeks with a fractured hand
In more positive news, head of high performance Sean Murphy said first-year defender Cody Brand was in a strong position to return for Essendon's VFL clash with Sandringham at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday.

The No.53 draft pick missed the Bombers' VFL loss to Geelong on Friday with a hand injury.

“Cody has that fractured hand and he missed (because of it) on the weekend,” Murphy told Dons Digital’s Liberty Financial Performance Update.

“He’ll train during the week and be a test for this weekend, but it’s all looking pretty positive at this point.”

Bit of personalised coaching from the veteran in the VFL..

Any body language experts?

"So I retired right, and then first chance I get to wear the red sash, jumped at it"

And again, wayward kicking. Progressing the defensive side of his game.

Cody Brand
Stats: 12 disposals, six marks

“Cody defended really well. He was solid back there in our defence and it was sort of a typical ‘Brandy’ game from a defensive point of view. Unfortunately for him some of his kicking let him down. He turned the ball over in some dangerous spots for us but it was really pleasing to see that the defensive side of his game is continually progressing.”

Translated: still a long way off a debut.
