Treloar is a Western Bulldogs player, that won't change. The AFL will pay his wages regardless (as they do for all players).

It's just a matter of whose TPP it goes under in which year. They haven't gone to mediation yet, which if they do will mean the AFL makes a decision and its binding on all parties.

There's also a thread for that, we certainly don't need two about him.
So the dogs can come out and say they aren't paying a cent of his salary for the next 5 years. In that case, why would the Pies trade him?

There is a trade period for trading players, and there's a separate deadline for pick-only trades. You can still trade picks by themselves, for example one just went through a minute ago between GWS and the Bulldogs.

All I know about what happens with extensions and player salaries is from some of the articles floating around, for example this one:

But what we are seeing is there's actually no deadline for trading players. The Treloar one still isn't done.

Can other club come in now and say to the pies they will pay all of his salary?

Has it ever been publicized before, the salary cap payments by individual clubs (Treloar should get all his money - one way or another), (TPP) , were allowed to be negotiated weeks after the 'trade deadline'.

Is Adam Treloar the first time this fact has become public knowledge?

You could certainly make that argument, and the AFL has been known to play fast and loose with the rules and how they feel like interpreting them from minute to minute.

But I find it a bit too tin foil for my taste in this case.

Er, no. And I don't know how you got that out of my post. Also, how about go argue that in the Treloar thread?

Treloar being apparently paid 1.5 million dollars to not play football for a team does feel somewhat unique.

But I do wonder if the trade rules were made public prior to 5he last trade period.
Paying a portion of a salary to get the player off the books has definitely been done many times before, although it seems to contravene rule 9.4. 9.4 says they can't include money in the trade. So a club can't actually give money to another club as part of the trade, and that aspect is likely not included on the relevant forms. Seemingly they can give money to the player though (or more technically probably allocate TPP funding to the player via the AFL).

The way it might work is that the original club breaks the player's contract and has to pay him out 100% of the base pay that was in that contract, less any money he receives from another AFL club for the duration of the original contract. There's a rule that is similar to that, but it's more about contracted players being delisted, paid out, and then subsequently drafted to another club so that they can't double dip, so it doesn't specifically apply to this situation. In that case the original club is on the hook for 100% less whatever is in the new contract, and the original club isn't party to the new contract and doesn't really have a say (but might ordinarily choose to keep the player if the player's new contract is insufficient).

The player signing the actual contract with their new club usually doesn't happen during trade period either I would think, since they're mostly overseas or at least out of town (unless they have asked someone to sign on their behalf or something, but I feel like they probably would sign themselves in most cases as it's kind of a big deal). The jumper reveal photos are either photoshopped or taken in advance, before the player gets back to the club and does things properly.

It's a different situation but with the free agency thing, when a free agency offer is matched for an RFA they have 7 days to enter into an agreement with their current club under the matched terms or else the matched terms expire and they become a regular uncontracted player. So evidently the actual FA mechanism and the player signing a contract with their club are linked but ultimately separate events.

As for the actual rules, they specify that players and/or picks can be exchanged by submitting form 9 and 10. We don't have access to the forms but the forms are labelled as being one for the transferor club and one for the transferee club regarding the exchange of players or picks, so I'd say these are the two forms that have to be submitted by the trade deadline and which don't specify salary arrangements which can't be paid from one club to the other anyway. Which is exactly as we've been led to believe.

The only reason it's unique is because clubs don't ordinarily trade players that have 5 years to run. Paying 300k per year for a player not on your books has probably been done before though.

The player contract spreadsheets posted here and in all the club focus threads have just been updated for some minor glitches related to mid-season draft rookies being added to the list and upsetting the contract lengths for other players.

While I was sorting that out, I also took a screenshot of the list analytics based on current lists from the master spreadsheet (the one with all of the clubs):

Might be some minor discrepancies since it's based on footywire but still interesting as a general lay of the land type thing.

So I discovered this great site draftguru recently which chronicles the history of player drafting and movements since 1986. I was interested in seeing that inforation organised by premiership teams and comparing and maybe looking at trends and what not between those teams but they didn't seem to have it (although you can look at a list in a given year). I looked around BF but couldn't really find it here either (it seems individual club boards have threads about their own premierships, but they're muddled, can be hard to find and are in vastly different formats).

So I whipped up a program to retrieve draftgurus data and organise it how I wanted it and thought I'd share for those who were also interested, enjoy:

Explanations of some things:
  • I only went back to 2000 because that was really the first premiership team to be composed mostly of players taken in a draft (north in 99 had 12 players I think from drafts, but a few of those I think warmed the premiership bench and half a team just doesn't seem worth comparing to the rest).
  • You'll notice for traded in players it doesn't recognise their AAs w/ previous clubs, that was just how draftguru did it and I couldn't be bothered to disagree; if they didn't win an AA with their new club it's hard to say you recruited an AA player.
  • Also you'll see w/ Essendon and the Lions teams they still had players not recruited by draft or trade and those player's AA's aren't taken into account. Same story as above, I couldn't be bothered to disagree w/ draftguru and the main purpose of this was to look at premiership teams after the intorduction of the draft and so how a club used their draft picks to build a premiership winning list.
  • I've already found and fixed several minor mistakes in the above from draftguru or my program, and seeing as how I don't know much about a lot of these players and their draft/trade hisotry it's reasnably likely there's a mistake somewhere so if you spot any mistake could you please point it out, I'm very interested in fixing it up, cheers.

Draft guru is great, I have the same data for the last decade in a spreadsheet so you can compare it more easily;

The last one in that post ^ might take a while to load though. My spreadsheet is more about their weight/age/height stats each year though rather than where they were drafted.

I think I did have something else with where they were drafted but I don't know if I ever got to posting it 🤔 I'll look

awwww, it cut out my whitespace, any1 know how to fix?
I found the one I was thinking of but it's 2020 lists not premiership lists.

There's a bunch of tabs but you get the idea;

It's just the sum of 2020 games played by players taken at each pick range at each club.

You could do something like that with your data in Google Sheets so you can publish it and compare it easily, and you won't lose your white space or need to stuff around with the tables formatting on the forum (which can be pretty buggy).

This and that other post is quite cool! Thanks for that. I'll give sheets a go.

Looking at which clubs played 418 games I assume that was done between SF and PF games ie sides that had played 2 finals as both Brisbane and Port total is 396 and they went straight thru to the PFs after winning their QFs.

Something like that. It wasn't finished, I abandoned it some time ago so I wouldn't read too much into it.

I thought the format might be helpful for OP with his data ^

Great stuff Swanks McSwankserton. One small request when you get some spare time, as i know above would have taken you a while, is to add at the bottom of each year, future All Australian players.

Some young players were only in their 2nd, 3rd, 4th year into their career but would become multiple All Australians in future years as they reached their peak years. Highlights quality of the team I think.
