Out:
Martin (rest) looked cooked with the extra game time after a good start.
Schache... (omt) his a great vfl player
West (omt) was very impressed with his vfl game last week very poor last night though. Burning team mates in better positions, undisciplined frees.
4th out of Scott or JJ. JJ was lost again but may survive with Scott's late injury, very disipointing considering it was his best game.
In:
English, sweet, butler, khamis

McNeil to replace JJ

Martin had a rest two weeks ago. I agree he looked cooked late in the game, but it's a worry he is barely lasting a month before needing a break.

He should have been teamed with Sweet and wouldn’t have been beaten as badly. Lost on the selection table by choosing Schache.

I said to my son during last week's game that Stef looked like an old man at times. Was always nervous about him on the G against Nankervis basically one out.

Sam Power has his work cut out filling some glaring holes in the list.

Really hope Weightman and Garcia play well today in the VFL I think they can give us the pressure and work rate our forward line lacks atm.

Also based on last nights performance west cannot play next week. If that was any other player without that surname posters would be out for his head. Was a selfish lazy undisciplined game and completely unacceptable
Agree on West if he doesn't play inside mid he isn't quick enough to play as a small forward. Doesn't bring a lot of defensive pressure, and burnt teammates and then didnt get the journey from 40m out.
He needs to adjust his attitude and just play a role for now and not try and be a star

Nank was great but didn’t think Martin was that bad he won the hitouts (I think) but he did look knackered. Where Nank was influential was in the ground ball contests and blocking.

Martin tried but ran out of gas. Problem is effectively solved with English coming in and giving us both minutes in the square but much more important is what he does around the ground - we have seen when it.

Should we give Sweet a run to allow Martin to recover? Would be a good idea but just looking forward to English and Martin playing together again soon.

He also doesn’t have much forward nous. Inside mid or bust in my opinion

I was out last night and totally missed the game. And I’m not sure that I want to go within five miles of the replay. But I would have bet that Richmond without Martin versus Dogs without Dunkley would have given us a clear advantage in the midfield, given our much talked about depth of quality in there. Do we just not bat as deep as we think we do? Talk of our midfield being schooled last night is baffling without having witnessed the contest. Or did we just have an off night? 😞
Nankervis got on top of Stef just before half time and our mids were well beaten for the majority there after. I do wonder if the match against GWS flattened us as a team didn't seem to be a lot of energy from us. Which is unusual as this was a huge opportunity to put a fork in the Tigers top 4 chances but we weren't good enough on the night

He is 34 and didn't play much last year through injury, he is going to need to be managed carefully. In hindsight it would have been better to bring in Sweet to give Martin a chop out, easy to be wise after the fact

Yeah he had a bad one, he will bounce back though!!

I'm surprised people aren't taking this into account more. We had a 39 point away win in freezing conditions in a tough, physically grinding game. The tigers were basically witches hats last week against Melbourne. Add that to the fact we had too many players brought in due to injury that aren't good enough for that level.

The physicality and pressure in the second half (and the last 10 mins of the 2nd qtr) really affected us. It was a good early workout for finals footy. We discovered that nearly the whole side can fold mentally under that pressure but some of them have been there before (2016) and we know they can handle it on a good day. Others who were suspect are being found out.

Bevo should be looking to bring in a player or two with aggression and mental toughness. But not overdo it. West is worth another chance. He fluffed some early chances and I think that got into his head. He does have some mongrel and he surely won't play that badly again.

OUT: Schache, JJ

IN: English, Garcia

If Scott's injured bring in McNeil.
Pretty sure Bevo won't drop Hannan but I would - I'd bring in JUH.

It was reminiscent of our final against GWS, but the aggression was more subtle, West also played in the team that game.

The good thing is that English, Vandermeer and McNeil should all be available this week. Increases pressure for spots particularly for those small forward/mid roles. Butler pressing his case for this week too, and it will be good to see a number of VFL players continue to put their hands up. Even non-listed players, as they could be the ones coming onto the AFL list in the event of a major injury. Garcia could even play this week as that fifth mid which we tried splitting between Bailey Smith and Lipinski on Friday. Could be good to have another specialist instead and let those two play outside. West should also come into consideration for that midfield role. Cordy was a liability, but maybe Young isn't the answer, as the extra mobility that a smaller defender can provide could maybe have added more upside. Khamis could come in to fill that role and that would be one hell of a mobile backline. Unsure if Martin needs a rest, but a 9-day break should be sufficient, with Timmy also coming back in to help him out. If he does need a rest, I have no issue with Sweet coming in to fill a spot for this week.

IN: Khamis, Vandermeer, Butler, English
OUT: Cordy, Scott, Johannisen, Schache

FB: Crozier, Keath, Duryea
HB: Daniel, Wood, Dale
C: Lipinski, Liberatore, Smith
HF: Hunter, Naughton, Hannan
FF: English, Bruce, Treloar
FOL: Martin, Bontempelli, Macrae
INT: Khamis, Vandermeer, West, Butler

EMER: Young, McNeil, Garcia, Johannisen

McLean, Williams, Richards, Jong, Dunkley and Gardner on the injury list which we can hopefully continue to shrink.

Great summation.

Amazing the amount of overreaction we have after our first loss (to the reigning premiers no less).

Main area of concern is a specialist small forward and a 2nd tall KPD. Young and Cordy are getting left behind and I think it is worth going with Khamis for a few games until Gardner is right. Also Williams should be a couple of weeks away from returning.

Don't think we will make wholesale changes. Perhaps Khamis, Butler and Garcia each get a look over the next 4 - 6 weeks.

Think Hannan will stay in.

Even after his disappearing act in the second half. But I don’t solely blame him, two thirds of our team did the same.

Missing Dunkley ad a factor in our performance is a given.
Out schache in Chilli
Out west in McNeil
out lippy in vdm
out jj in butler
out Scott in Garcia

Smith can get his hands a bit dirtier on the inside with a chop out from Garcia as another option.

A few more changes than is ideal but it's only Carlton🙂

Cordy gets a life coz the midfield didnt do enough.

I really encourage anyone suggesting English back in this week to watch this short video on concussion in NHL.

I’m a die hard bulldogs man but also have competed in combat sports my entire life and have seen first hand CTE and how heart breaking it is. The AFLs mandatory 12 day concussion rule has no medical basis and serious head trauma needs to be given a longer break. All leading research suggest minimum 30 days for serious knockouts.

Obviously it’s horrible for our structure but research has proven how vulnerable the brain is post concussion. I’d love to see us lead the way especially after seeing Picken end his career prematurely due to it only 2 years ago
