Roast Tom Hawkins’ goalkicking

Remove this Banner Ad

He has kicked 20.27 (43%) in his last 10 games.

In 2017-2020 to that point he had kicked 207.112 (65%).

It’s getting to be a problem, whether it’s due to technique, yips, field position, whatever.

Pull yourself together Tom!

He is taking a lot of shots from the wrong side for a right footer but as we know he has that inside out left to right swing on his kicks which makes that side easier for him. Has he lost that ball flight?

Maybe it's just statistical regression? :p

I feel like we haven't been getting it to spots that give him the best chance, but even with that, there's something that's NQR at the moment

Hopefully something he can figure out :)

He seems to get a lot of shots in the pockets from difficult angles, probably because our slow build up allows the opposition time to get back and clog the corridor. That said, he still should be converting at a much better percentage than he is. His inaccuracy is actively costing us points at the moment. It feels like a throwback to earlier in his career when he had these issues, but even during that early career run when his set shot confidence was down he wasn't as poor shooting for goal as he's been lately.

You can tell it's on his mind every time he has a shot now.

He has a habit of letting this kind of thing into his head, look at 2011 (all of it, not just the GF), once he has that doubt or issue into his head he finds it really hard to work it out.
He'll no doubt figure it out at some point this year and become the dead eye that he usually is, problem we have is how many games are we going to lose or be in position to lose before he does.
IMO he cost us last night, not solely of course there were a few others, but he had 3 chances to probably win us the game and fumbled all 3. You can't do that as an 800k a year focal point and key veteran leader.

From your image, are you saying we should just plonk him in the goal square as he hasn't missed from there?

Is he fit? How is his back? How much is he practicing? I cant say I have noticed any distinct difference to his tech. Maybe its a symptom being nearer the end than may might wish? Maybe it's just something he has let get away from him.

But him missing the one he used to get gives one a glimpse of what its like to have a Key target whos conversion is unreliable. Its glimpse of what Sav might bring if he doesn't work on it. Pressure is brought to and weighed down on that key.

Yep we need answers and the only one that can get those answers is Tom Browne.

Our delivery to him is beyond shithouse. What the f*ck happened to kicking the footy to a space the forward leads into? Lead out. Chest mark. Kick a goal. Lead out. Chest mark. Kick another goal. We should have Cameron or Hawkins living in the goalsquare and leading out from it, and whoever isn't in the goalsquare can be high half forward. Clear out the rest.

Hawkins' Hectare! Cameron's... um... yeah, I dunno.

Certainly can’t be trusted for a clutch goal also, misses just about all of them, use to be such a reliable kick for goal.

All mental now, the more you miss the more it just keeps playing on your mind.

ive posted a few GD threads he seems to be getting too close to the mar when he kicks.

Not sure if that he feels he cant make the distance so he needs to get closer or if its just something that happens...

Needs to be looked at IMO

Cameron's Croft, from a book written by Frank Tyson about Colin Croft's breakthrough test analysis against Pakistan in '76-'77. Croft being an area.

Geelong seem to do that regularly, other sides seem to just not have that issue. Not just for goalkicking either, even with the man on the mark standing, we seem to be close enough to him to make him a factor, whereas other club's players fan wide and make it a 18 v 17 contest against our statue.

Maybe it's time to stop giving him two crappy options- either leading to the pockets or having mids bomb to him on a 3 to 1 contest.

He is, however, still missing sitters. Move him to CHF.

That looks like an image of slow entries with the middle and preferred side for a right footer well defended forcing the forward to lead wide and to the more difficult shot on goal.

I reckon he prefers that side because of his left to right swing. My guess is he’s not getting the same swing at the moment.

This is the past three years for reference:
