Roast St Kilda in no mans land

Saints in the worst position not rebuilding or challenging arguably furthest position away from a flag

Their youth is max king and Clark cupboard is bare they struggle to develop their own so they overpay to get others like hill 900k and Hannebery on 700k

They topped up with Frawley and Ryder etc

Where to from here?

Some very questionable recruiting. Hill possibly worth the punt at the time but he seems cooked. Signing up injury prone players like Hannebery, B Crouch and Kent on big money/long term deals has not helped either.

Ratten flies under the radar a bit too. Nice guy who has had some pretty awful luck but I’m not sure he’s a very good senior coach.

Keepable players:
Crouch
Billings
Steele
Marshall(?)
Sinclair
Butler
Membrey
King
Gresham

A poor state of affairs. Then you have the following severee underperformers on bloated contracts:
Hannebery
Ryder
Hill
Zak Jones
Carlisle.

Need to offload the above and get whatever is offered.

I'd be letting Billings go in free agency and taking the compensation pick.

It's not that dire for saints. Bytel n Byrnes are still really young mids and just got outclassed. Coffield is good too. They are missing another good kpd and need to get Marshall right. I don't think Ratten is the right coach to get the team where they're needed though. He should also be in the coaching box and not out at the bench. His coaching out there is hampering saints and not helping. I think Saints need a bit of a cleanout come seasons end though.

Why the question mark on Marshall? He's pretty obviously a gun player, and he's just put together 2 full seasons so not sure he can be questioned injury wise either.

Crouch was a dead set non-event.

Hill looked like he was in a back pocket and did diddly.

Has Hanneberry played at all since crossing?

Ryder was up against a 4th gamer and broke even.

Geary looks cooked.

If McKernan gets a game you are in trouble. That shank early told the story.

Jack Lonie looks like he’s from Auskick.

The club really has to fight for relevance - a foundation club and one premiership in 125 years.

The Bulldogs flag in 2016 has shown it is possible for historical minnows to break through. But the Saints just never seem to have the right leadership.

Rowan Marshall and Max King are definitely two really solid planks to build around. Not sure King is a forward though; could be a gun CHB for the next 10 years for them.

They've got to burn off the Brad Hill, Dan Hannebury and Jake Carlisle contracts and use that money more wisely.

Not that it matters with new cattle and different era but Rattens time at Carlton was always overrated.

The mainstream hype last year was all that Carlton should have never sacked Ratten. Which was either a) a complete rewriting of history or b) not rating the Carlton list at the time, the performance of which would be a consequence of his unaccountable gameplan.

They do have some genuinely good players and have had a poor run with injuries this year. That said there are some very real list issues that others have pointed out. Its looking like last year was just one of those years where everything went right. Their massive losses this year are extremely concerning. We aren't even half way through the season and they've had 3 losses over 70 points - that's pretty embarassing stuff. It seems like once things go bad for them there is no fight in their list.

Huge similarities with North in the Brad Scott/Cam Joyce era.

The difference being that we were terrible at “selling the club” to “big fish” and were forced into rebuilding.

Unfortunately for the Saints, they were able to and have put together a team of bandaids. They have had 2 good drafts (Clarke & King) and thought that was enough, it’s not.

Strip it back and start again properly IMO.

Long, Coffield, Highmore, Joyce need to get given more games. It does affect their team balance but I'd play Howard and Wilkie down back from tonights back 6, Sinclair further Up, Clark stays in the midfield.

Frawley, Lonie, Webster, McKernan can't play again. Carlisle is done. Kent and Hannebery should be seen as VFL players and depth at best.
Geary, Ryder just stopgaps but bring enough otherwise to keep playing.
